Sunlight

    Dear Sifus and fellow forumners,
I read some old threads in this forum that says sunlight (partial) is good for development of colours and skin quality in kois particularly the likes of yamabuki ogon, kohaku etc. Some suggested 30% of sunlight but it was not clear to me whether this refers to duration, area of coverage or intensity. What I mean is, if it means duration, does 30% means say sunlight like in Malaysia is 12 hours in a day, you make sure that your pond gets 4 hours of direct sunlight a day and the rest of the time is shaded? Or, is it that you allow 30% of your pond area to be exposed to sunlight throughout the day while the rest is shaded? Or, do I place my pond under a shade (like now the roof of my porch is made from tinted polycarbonate sheet) that allows some 30% intensity of sunlight to come through for most part of the day? Would appreciate some clarity as I intend to modify my pond if necesary as I am not getting good quality of yellow on my yamabuki ogon. Would also like to hear some experience from sifus here on effect of sunlight (good or bad) for newbies like me to learn. Thanks. 8-)

Sis Neli, you mean, as per my example; 4 hours of direct sunlight onto the entire pond per day, correct?

Personally, I find morning sunlight of 4 hours hitting only 50 to 70 percent of the pond the best for clear water pond. Afternoon sunlight is much hotter and increase the pond water temperature. It is the vitamin D that the koi gets from the suns UV rays that brightens the red and yellow pigment.

    Agree with bro HDCu,

Afternoon sunlight is extremely hot and eventually will have algae problem.
