Mbuna Cichlids Tank Smells Really Bad

Last updated: September 29, 2022

I’ve been told that the smell of a fish tank can be caused by several things:

Overfeeding your fish. If you’re feeding them too much food, they will produce more waste than the filter can handle. This will result in an increase in ammonia levels and thus a bad smell coming from the tank.

Not cleaning your tank regularly enough. If you don’t clean your tank regularly enough, then algae will grow and this will also cause ammonia levels to rise as well as causing an overall stink in your tank.

Adding too many fish to a small aquarium or vice versa not adding enough fish to a large aquarium (this is why we always recommend that you have at least 1 inch of water per fish).

So how do we get rid of this awful smell? Here are some suggestions:

1) Try changing the water (I know this sounds like a no-brainer but sometimes it’s easier said than done). Sometimes all it takes is just changing out 10% or so of the water and this will help clear out any excess waste that may be lingering in there as
