Jello Fish Food

A lot of people here have made snail jello before, but I decided to play around with the recipe.
Could it be used for more than just snails? Fish will sometimes nibble at it, but I wanted a good solid food for most any bottom feeder.

Results were spectacular, as almost all of my fish go ape over this stuff, and they have never looked healthier.
This jello recipe is high in calcium and trace nutrients, but low phosphorous.
(Note: some types of fish, like bettas, may require additional food as this is not perfectly balanced for them, but if they will eat even a bit it really improves their coloring and health).

4 – 3.5 oz containers Gerber Organic Green Bean baby food
2 ? 3.5 oz containers Gerber Organic Peas baby food

(I use the 3.5 oz containers that look like mini Ziploc containers. These are great for storing the finished jello in).

5 large whole fresh carrots
2 cups fresh kale
2 cups fresh collard greens
2 cups fresh turnip greens
1 cup dill weed
2 cups fresh broccoli florets (the less stem and more bushy part the better)

3 Tablespoons crushed (powder) Omega One Cichlid Flakes
3 Tablespoons crushed (powder) Omega One Veggie Flakes
2 Tablespoons crushed (powder) Shrimp pellets
3 Tablespoons crushed (powder) Spirulina Flakes
4 Tablespoons Thawed and strained Cyclop-Eeze

One Tablespoon Vita-Chem or similar liquid fish food additive

One 75 gram container of Jurassical Calcium supplement (Calcium Carbonate)
9 packages unflavored gelatin

1.) Empty the baby food into a (large) microwave safe mixing bowl.

2.) Wash and cut the carrots into small pieces and put into a microwave safe bowl
3.) Add just enough dechlorinated water to barely cover the carrots (the less water the better)
4.) Microwave the carrots for 1-2 minutes until soft.
5.) Place carrots only (SAVE THE WATER) into a blender or food processor and blend. Slowly add the water that the carrots were microwaved in (adding back nutrients that might have cooked out), and blend until the carrots are pureed to a slightly thicker consistency than the baby food. Add the carrots to the baby food mixture.

6.) Repeat steps 2-5 with the Kale, Collards, Turnip Greens, and Dill weed. (Hint: use the leftover water from the carrots for the kale, adding extra if needed. Use the leftover from the Kale for the Collards. You get the idea. This helps save as many nutrients as possible.

8.) Wash the Brocolli, but do not microwave it. In a food processor, grind the Brocolli florets to as close to a powdery texture as you can get and then add it to the mix.

9.) Stir the Cichlid, Spirulina, and Veggie flakes and the Crushed shrimp pellets evenly into the mixture. Be careful when stirring not to introduce air bubbles to the mix.

10.) Dump the entire bottle of calcium supplement in and stir well.

11.) At this point, the mixture should be thicker than the original baby-food base, but not too thick. If it seems much too thick, you can add a small amount of (dechlorinated water) at a time and stir well until it thins out. If you do this, use any leftover water from cooking the veggies first.

12.) Microwave mixture until it reaches boiling (I suggest covering the bowl with a paper towel so it doesn?t splash in your microwave)

13.) Slowly stir in the gelatin powder. Again, be careful not to introduce any air bubbles if at all possible. If you add the gelatin too fast, you get clumps of it that the fish won?t eat and it messes up your water.

14.) Slowly stir the thawed Cyclop-Eeze and Vita-Chem into the mix.

15.) Spread the mix in a pyrex pan, about ? inch thick. (Multiple pans may be needed). And place in refrigerator until jello sets.

16.) Once it has set, cut the jello into small pieces (I aim for about 1cm squares) place the pan in the freezer until it freezes solid

17.) Separate the precut pieces and store them. Thaw what you need (Just holding it in your hand should do the trick) and feed.

When processing the veggies, cooking removes a lot of the nutrients. The idea behind microwaving in water and then reusing as much of it as possible in the jello is to preserve as much nutrition as possible. Take care not to microwave any longer than is absolutely necessary, so as not to destroy the nutrients by overcooking.

Not only does this get great growth on my snails, but my other fish love it too.
