Most aquarium inhabitants are cold blooded. They maintain the same temperature as the environment surrounding them. Temperature regulation is therefore very important since sudden or extreme changes in temperature can lead to the death of fish and other marine lives. Temperature also affects your fish’s breeding, feeding, digestion, and all metabolisms. Very high temperatures can also cause the growth of algae in the tank.
A thermometer must be used to monitor the water’s temperature in an aquarium. Temperature problems sometimes arise when it becomes too cold or too hot. For this reason cooling mechanisms must be in place to reduce the water temperature to the recommended levels. Heaters must also be used to warm up the water in case temperatures fall to unacceptably low levels.
It must be understood that warm water carries lower oxygen levels than cool water. So it is possible that your fish can die of lack of oxygen if aquarium temperatures increase too much. It is, therefore, advised to reduce the livelihood in the aquarium or reduce your stocking levels while warmer weather or seasons are present in your area. A fan can be used to lower the temperature in an aquarium. This can be achieved by opening up the head of the tank and allowing air to be fanned over across the water.
Changing your water frequently is very useful to curb problems that result from very high temperatures. This way you moderate the temperature by continuing to introduce fresh water that has just the right recommended temperature for your aquarium life. Changing your water also helps replenish water that was lost through evaporation, and prevents concentration of mineral chemicals in your aquarium. Using water that has been slightly chilled in the refrigerator can be helpful if your water temperatures are too high, but everything must be done in moderation.
It is also recommended to ensure that the aquarium tank is housed in a well ventilated room. Curtains can be hung on windows in the room to reduce the amount of heat entering the aquarium tank. In place of fans and water removal, chillers can be used to facilitate temperature regulation. Heat problems can be dealt with by choosing low-heat generating lighting methods such as fluorescent lights that emit little to no heat, as compared to ordinary bulbs which can heat up the tank.
