Posted by Raf on November 05, 1999 at 21:32:17:
I found out which of my fish is making all the waste. It's my clown pleco! He's been literally attached to my driftwood sucking off all the algae, and he's been releasing a LOT of waste. I knew it was weird that my other fish were pooping that much since I've been barely feeding them lately.
Any ideas on how to lessen my plecos waste output?

OK that explains it. Then the poop is really just undigested driftwood scrapings. So it's not as bad as regular fish dung. This problem should lessen as he gets down to the harder parts of the wood, the wood is going to be slowly eaten away, it will take a long time though for it to be gone, years.
This is a common problem with plecos, they really seem to enjoy gnawing the wood.
Good luck,
Clint

Hello,
I'm new to aquariums. I've had fish in bowls for ages, but I figured it was time for some 'urban renewal'
for my fish and got an aquarium. Everywhere I've gone says rocks for the bottom of the tank. But I was
wondering if sand is alright, or is that a no-no for goldfish/black moors?
If anyone knows that would be great! Thanks for helping out a rookie!

Really it's aquarium gravel. It's not fine sand but it's not what you would call rocks either.
Personally i do use sand which is a no-no to most experts, but the plants grow better for me in sand, about half bb size, or you might know it as blaster sand.
Of course you can also use a few big rocks and stones for decoration, but what you are trying to avoid is having cavities that food will fall into and rot.
Hope this is what you meant.

Is there such as a thing as "too many water changes"? I keep having to vacuum my 29-gallon because my gouramis and kribs are messy! i've been feeding less, but they're still unloading a lot (my poor anubias plant's leaves are covered in fish doodoo every day).
So basically I've been changing around 10% of the water every 3-4 days. Is that too many?

You must be (still) feeding too much, try cutting it in half. Feed them just as often as you did, just half the amount. They really don't need that much, only a pinch a day keeps the poop away.

Posted by Sandy on November 04, 1999 at 10:36:25:
Thank goodness I found this message board!
Recently, I set up a 5 gallon aquarium. After setting it up, I let it bubble away for a good week, treated the water, and then added a male betta for starters. The water and everything looked fine when I added the fish and I've had bettas before so I'm not completely new at this. After a day or two with my betta in his new home, I noticed the water got cloudy and it looked like the coating of the bottom gravel was coming off the stones! It's color was labeled "pearl" on the package. Now, I bought this gravel at an aquarium supply store and it specifically said "safe for aquariums, plants, etc." It was labeled aquarium gravel so why should I have thought otherwise? I also made SURE I rinsed it very well before setting up the tank.
As you might expect, the betta instantly turned listless, groggy, and floated around the bottom of the tank as soon as the water quality plummeted, only swimming occasionally. I promptly moved him to a small glass kitchen container temporarily until I get this situation resolved, however he's not eating and hasn't perked up very much and I'm afraid he's been poisoned. Have any of you heard of something like this happening before? It's not like I tried using something other than aquarium gravel. The more I think about this problem, the angrier I get! Suggestions anyone? Thanks...

You did everything right, it's just bad gravel. I also think he may have ingested a flake or 2 of the gravel paint (or coating).
Maybe he will get better when he passes it.
I am surprised this happened too, you can usually trust aquarium supplies to be better than this.
Let us know how the Betta does.

I think it's just age thats got him. How old is he? Bettas normally only live for about 2 years, and they are about 6 months old when you get them.
I don't think it's dropsy but sounds like it is very serious, you can try about 2 teaspoons of salt per gallon (I've even used 2 teapsoons in a quart jar before) it seems to releive the bloatedness some. But it doesn't sound good.
Sorry,

Sounds like Pop-Eye. It's hard to say. Below is a description of this disease.
Check out this website for further descriptions of common fish diseases. It has helped me: http://ecol.webpoint.com/pets/disdir.html
Pop-Eye, or Exophthalmia
Symptoms:
Pop-eye is a condition that causes one or both eyes stick out of the head in an unnatural way. (Note: Some fish, including moors and some types of goldfish, are bred for this appearance. Don't treat a fish that is supposed to look like its eyes are shooting out of their sockets.)
This affliction can be caused by bacterial infection, parasites, bad water and metabolic disorders. It usually strikes one or several of the fish in a tank community, but rarely all.
If many fish in the tank community get pop-eye, the tank water could be obscenely dirty, or an infectious agent could be polluting the water.
Pop-eye is not usually infectious, and is rarely fatal.
Treatment
Antibiotics. Leave it in the community tank after treatment, but isolate infected individuals if the disease starts to spread.

those puffy rings are a BAD indication... you need to get that fish some meds, quick. these rings usually precede dropsy... dropsy indicates a bacterial infection. if your fish reaches the dropsied stage, it is usually too late. a good medication for this disease is maracyn 2. you really need to treat that fish and keep the water clean. these types of infections are brought on and irritated by bad water quality. GOOD LUCK, this could be really hard...

I have two male bettas in two different small tanks that have aeration and under gravel filters. One I've had for about eight months and the other I've had for about a week. Are bottom feeders compatible with bettas and if so, which ones? Would it be wise to introduce a bottom feeder to the betta I've had for eight months or not? He's never had a tank mate before. I've heard that small cories do OK with bettas. I've also seen these botton feeders call ghost shrimp (they are freshwater). How would they do?

It really depends on the size tank you have, if you have a five gallon tank tops you can get 3 cories, you really need more than two cories because they like company. Or you can get kuhli loaches, too. But if the tank is less than five gallons, get ghost shrimp, watch out because sometimes they eat each other, get two, a male and a female, the female is the one with eggs by her tail. Then when they eggs hatch the betta will have live food which is good. But you don't really want to keep the baby shrimp because they will EASILY turn into 150 ghost shrimp in your tank, my LFS had ten ghost shrimp by themselves and by the end of two months, the tank floor was FILLED with shrimp, as well as the walls of the tank.

I have a betta in a 29-gallon with many tank mates, and he is a model citizen. He is the king of the tank, actually. Everyone respects him in there.
Cories are great with bettas, and so are kuhli loaches. If you want to put other midwater swimmers with the betta, make sure their the docile types like the neon or cardinal tetras. Also, some other tetras (like serpae) can be fin-nippers, so don't put them in there with your betta.
Have fun picking his tankmates, and good luck.

20 gal is great to *start* keeping goldfish. lol it really is addictive and most will end up buying huge tanks and extensive filtration for those precious little "grapefruits with fins" ;) that is if you decide on fancies... which really will be best for your smaller tank, though they arent *quite* as hardy as common or comet goldfish. id recommend at least power filtration and if you like, secondary filtration will always win... once you get your bacteria established (i mean COMPLETELY established), add both fish. goldfish will really bond with each other and interact. goldfish need a varied diet with lower protein and higher fiber. feed your basic pre packaged goldfish food at first. brine shrimp are very good for goldfish. they will also enjoy blanched frozen peas, blanched romaine lettuce (yeah yeah, all in my article on here somewhere). after that a %50 water change every week will be all you need. its a good idea to vacuum %100 of the gravel... anyhow, LOL im rambling.... read the article and check out www.rk2000.com good luck!! im here if you need me :P

I also noticed that my female krib is getting colorful and more aggressive than usual (she's usually very nice to her neighbors), so I'm guessing she's ready to spawn.
My question is, will she wait for a male krib to grow older? I am really hoping to pair her up soon, but the best I can do is a younger mate. I know you said to get the smaller male and just to make sure that the female accepts her, but I'm also curious if the age difference will affect anything with their spawning? (such as will the fry be weaker? or is there a bigger chance that they won't pair up at all because the female would want a larger mate?)
Thanks!

Kribs are capable of spawning at very young ages. The most likely problem would be that the young male wouldn't be physically able to fertilize the eggs. So you wouldn't get any viable eggs. But they usually need a few practice runs anyway.
And she will accept the male if he's the only choice, without a problem.

i was just wondering about paradise fish i saw them at one of my LFS and they looked heaps good.
my question is will they eat smaller fish such as neons because these paradise fish were pretty big
now with the gourmas my LFS had a good variety of them and i was also wondering will they get along with neons and guppies and harqueiln rosbaras and paradise fish because im really after some of these fish.
or would it be best to have a 15g tank just for goumas seeing i got one lying around.

Paradise fish have a reputation as being pretty mean. I've had some that weren't all that bad.
But any large fish will eat a neon if it can.
Paradise fight among themselves more than with other fish. They are capable of living in extremely small containers like Bettas, and they can tolerate cold water down to about 55F and up to about 90F. They are extremely hardy.
Here's a page about Paradise Fish
Good Luck,
Clint

I've read in many articles and books that paradise fish are the most aggressive in the gourami family -- which means it is probably territorial like crazy.
I assume one would do great in a 5-10 gallon with some corydoras cats and other peaceful fish that territorial species leave alone. I'm not sure if rasboras and tetras would be okay with them because of their aggressive nature, though.
I've seen those paradise fish though, and they do look great. Let us know what happens, because I'm curious about these guys myself.

If I am correct the Emerald Catfish is a variety of Corydoras. The action of going to the surface to gulp a little air is a common trait of Cories.
They store the air in their stomach and actually use it as an alternate breathing organ. And as you've noticed this behavior is sporatic and varies between individual fishes.

Hello, I set up my 5 gallon about 2 months ago and added a red and blue male betta. I was doing my water change and noticed a little bit of extra uneaten food. I want to add some ghost shrimp or some dwarf frogs. I really don't like keeping fish in a tank this small, so I only put in a Betta would African dwarf frogs be ok. I want the ghost shrimp but they are so hard to find. But I think tommorrow I will try some other stores. can someone help me.

The frogs would be fine, the Ghost Shrimp would be better cleaners. But a 5 gallon tank is not too small to add a couple of Cory cats which would really fit the bill.
