is crushed goldfish food good with crushed sun dried shrimp fo guppy fry?

That food combination will work. But Goldfish food is a lower protein food than most tropicals need. Goldfish have a primintive digestive system and can't utilize high protein. They need to be constantly eating, and they only half digest their food. Thats why they are constantly eating and messing up a tank. The dried shrimp would add some protein. But a regular tropical flake would be better. Clint

I assume you are keeping the Discus pretty warm so you'll need heat tolerant plants. I'd suggest java fern, anubias and water sprite. All of those will do fine in standard light of about 1 1/2 watts per gallon (flourescant) or partial sun. Clint

Subject: Freedie Fish Died!
Well, I didn't figure he had too much time to live. Two days ago he started to get that bloated stuff underneath. I did more reading up on what that was and discovered that it was incurable! I still kept a bit of salt added and the medication too in hopes that he would get well, but last night he was just awful looking and just floating at the top. The kids woke this morning and hollered that Freddie was dead. I had talked to them yesterday about the fact that there just was nothing else I could do to save him, but keep him in his new tank as comfortable as a fish could be and let him go. DH found out that the Sergeant at Salvation Army bought the fish at Walmart! Geez! Well, I will get the receipt today and take Mr. Freddie to them with tank and all and my receipt from Pet Smart to show them that I put $50 into this one little fish that should be just fine, but that somehow he must have contracted a desease there in their store or from the people that sell them the fish because he started getting sick the first day I had him. I am torn between not wanting to ever have a fish again and getting all my money back (make Walmart pay for it all since I am so peeved!) or going through the rigamaroll of sanitizing the tank and putting all new gravel in, yadda, yadda, to make it safe for some other fish. The kids enjoyed having Freddie (even as sick as he was) and probably would love to see any kind of fish in the tank. I just don't know if I could handle losing another fish if something were to happen. Seriously, I am sad. I want to cry. I am not usually this emotionally attached to animals, but .............. I guess search on other types of fish in small aquariums is going to get underway this AM. No more bettas. I just don't think I can do all that again. Goldfish might be easy enough. Sherrin

Sorry to hear about Freddie. I too had 4 male bettas die. I now have a beautiful healthy new one called Rainbow. I think I finally found the answer keeping them alive. I put in a 2 gal hex tank. The day I brought him home I floated his bag in the tank for 1/2 hour, added about 20% tank water to his bag, waited another 1/2 hour, added more tank water, waited another 1/2 hour, added more tank water, another half hour let him go in the tank. I also treated the tank the day before with aquarium salt and aquari-sol (ick medication), it seems to work well. I believe they get used to the chemical changes gradually. It was written by a woman who breeds just bettas. I also found that the lps charge the same for bettas as Walmart does. I also bought a betta there and it died in 2 days. Good luck, I really hope you try another betta again.I also have goldfish and have gone from a 6 gal tank to a 29 gal in just a few months because they grow sooo fast. It sounds like there was nothing you could have done for Freddie, his time was just up. I also thought no more bettas, until I see a beautiful one I can't resist.

I know how hard losing a pet can be. You should try guppies, white cloud mountain minnows, or zebra danios, one per gallon of water. Don't buy goldfish, to avoid dissapointment. If you had only a betta in the tank, I assume it was about 2 to 5 gallons, which is too small for a goldfish, they need at least 10 (until they get too big for that, they get up to 24"!)Or, if you fall in love with another betta-they're addictive-maybe he'll be healthier than the last one. good luck!

So sorry to hear about your loss. I lost two females a couple of months ago and I remember how helpless I felt and how sad when they died. I tried everything I knew to do and they just got sicker and sicker. I was really paranoid about the tank they were in, afraid to put another betta in although I had 2 corys and 2 neons still doing fine in it. If the bettas had been the only fish I would probably have broken the tank down, cleaned thoroughly and started over. As it was, I vacuumed well, disinfected the plants, went through a number of water changes, bought a more broad spectrum medication just in case, and eventually put one of my other bettas in. He is doing fine. I love the bettas--they are so responsive and so beautiful. I now have 6 males and 1 female in everything from a 2 gallon to a 10 gallon. I know that I am letting myself in for loss, even if they stay healthy most of their lives since they don't live all that long. I hope you find a fish that works for you. Goldfish can be very long lived, but as mentioned before, they need lots of space, and also good filtration since they produce a lot of waste. A positive thing about the bettas is that you don't have to worry so much about temperature and aeration and so forth like you do on some of the other fish.

Subject: Artifical plastic house plants in the aquarium/ also cichlid question
I was wondering, can artiafical plastic house plants withought any wiring or metals be used in the aquarium? Can someone tell me can I have pink convict cichlids in a 20 tall? If so how many can I have...Thank you all, Cheryl

Subject: Re: Artifical plastic house plants in the aquarium/ also cichlid question
Yes on plastic plants without metal, I have done it myself. Rinse really well. For cichlids floor space is more important than how many gallons. A mated pair of convicts are probably all that will fit. If the male is too aggressive the female will hide in the upper reaches of a tall tank. A 20 long could possibly house 2 pair but the there would have to be a lot of rocks and plants to offer visual searation from each other.

Subject: Not ok...Cichlid Questions
I can't post a new message, either, so let's see if I can attach my new question to this post. Two days ago, I bought 2 beautiful Kenyi African Cichlids. They seem very happy in their new home, a 10G with no other fish. This tank is my oldest and very well-established. I knew I was probably going to buy cichlids before I went, so I made a small rock cave toward the back of the tank and also have 2 little coves for them to hide in. These fish are gorgeous....bright blue with darker stripes. My questions are: Will they always hide in the rocks as much as now? They come out for a little while, but go back and hide so I can't see them. I have cichlid pellets but the lfs guy said they are too high in protein fo give them tropical flakes (I use Omega One) as well as spurlina flakes/tablets. Which is best? Also...I knew beforehand how cichlids like to dig and/or re-arrange decor. Other than the abovementioned ornaments, I only have a couple of fake plants. One was dug out this morning. I am very big on live aquatic plants and have some Vals on the way via aquabid order. Will these be ok or will they eventually destroy them? If so, what plants are strong enough for them? I can get just about anything here, but don't want to waste money since my other tanks are well-stocked with live plants. Finally, I am having a hard time finding info on the internet or in books about this species. Which lake are they from? I was told they'd grow to be about 4" each....is that right? Any special needs? Thanks a lot!

Subject: Re: Not ok...Cichlid Questions
They are rift lake cichlids and like hard alkaline water, but they seem to adapt to most normal tap water. I usually feed my fish what they like best and try to introduce some variety. The plants will be dug up in the tank, I would try using clay pots for the plants and maybe they will leave them alone. If you can get the latin name and search northernlight.com you should find a lot on them, northernlight concentrates on scientific stuff. Clint

Subject: Breed same pair of betta again
I read somewhere that it's easier to spawn the same pair of bettas again. I attempted it but when Ijust introduced the female in a separate container inside the tank, they were trying to bite each other's head off. The female was furious, the male was even more furious. They were biting the wall of the container but couldn't reach each other. So I was confused... what's wrong?
