Not type of fish but do you have that one special fish that just seems so special? I have one, a bumble bee goby. I have the tank set up with two pikes of rocks on each end that creates a lot of caves. The center is open, the hang on the back filter gives a river movement to the water. This one goby rules the center. He is always there, if another goby enters he chases them away, it is fun to watch him at feeding time.

I would float enough plants to cover about half the surface giving the fry places to hide. If they are already pregnant you do not need to add a male unless you wish too.

Hi All, Our angelfish has died today. She had a very bad mouth and looked like cotton mouth. She was treated but stopped eating a week ago, she just got worse. On a good note to all you snail people out there. We just bought a baby Oranda goldfish today. The tank he is in was loaded with small snails. Well in a matter of a few hours he had that job taken care of. I cannot find a snail anywhere. I know more will hatch but what a good snail catcher hey. I was told they will eat snails and they were right. So for that snail explosion try a goldfish.

you can make the 285 gallon tank a brackish tank. like 6 archerfish, 5 or so figure 8 puffers, a couple of flouders, some iridescent sharks and or a large school of glassfish. some scats, monos or something would be nice.

The Bumble Bees might be lost in so large a tank. They get just over an inch and will get eaten by larger fish. They are at the top of my fave list, have 8 in a 20 long right now with two glassfish.

I hate to go back on your word, but algae will grow best on air stones because of the huge supply of oxygen. I have had streams of long white algae on my air stones, 1.5 inches long. That is the part where you buy a new one. It is brown algae, due to overfeeding, overstocking, not enough water changes, and many things. What size tank and what fish are in it? How often do you do water changes? AJB

How much and what are you feeding? This is common, I have found the best way to deal with it is just wipe it off as much as possible. I would also do a larger water change, 20%, making sure you are vacuming the muck out of teh gravel.

Go find some flat rocks at your pet store that are flat. Go to a store and buy a new pan that is long and has tall enough sides to cover the rocks when filled with water. Break the rock from the petstore into very small enough pieces to fit into the bowl. Fill the pan with water and set it outside until it grows algae. Then, put the rocks in the bowl and the snails will eat it. Change the algae when it is gone or dies. AJB

If I understand this right all you have is the snails? No Fish? Go to the store and get algae wafers. The snails will eat these, flake food is of little value to a snail. Also, AJB had a good suggestion on how to get some algae for them but it might not be the most reliable depending on where you live.

Sounds like a firebelly newt. Be careful with htese if you have other pets in the house. If it gets out and eaten your petcould get very sick or die. These are neat pets, but they do need to get out of the water. A floating plastic lilypad will work fine or you can set up a palidarium. I am unsure about the spelling. I had one in my 29 gallon and it was a lot of fun. I used aquarium sealant to attach rocks to styrofoam pieces to create a waterfall falling into a pond like area that was about 8 inches deep. The newts usually stayed in the stream I created which became covered in algae and looked pretty real. I used danios for the fish.

I think you ar closer to the name than I was. When I did mine with the syrofoam I had a lot of open space under the water fall, I hid as much of my filter and hosing under there so in all I had about 13-15 gallons of water in there. I tried the water at different levels to see the effect and the noise level. It was also a narrow waterfall that went from the back to only 1/3 of the way towards the front and half as wide as the tank I did a zigzag kinda pattern with the waterfall. My goal was to keep as much water as I could in there.

How long have you had these fish? They sound like a real mess. I would start with a large water change, then salt, 1/4 tsp per gallon then add another 1/4 rsp in a few days so you are up to 1/2 tsp per gallon. Not sure about the worm think though.

She is going to give birth soon. I can not say if it is normal or not, but I seriously don't think there is any cause for alarm. Drape some mesh netting (sold at craft stores) across a 5 or ten gallon tank. Tape black paper all around leaving a little flap for a window. Get plenty of floating plants, live or fake, (just put small fake ones in without the little gravel lock). Feed her well with preferabaly frozen or live food, but flake works. Check on her every hour or as much as possible. When she is giving birth, don't expect millions of fry at once. It will take her a couple of days to finish birth. Make sure she cannot get out of the mesh and cover the tank well. You might want an air bubbler or a sponge filter. Hope that helps. AJB

I would use a milk gallon jug that I had cut as a scoop and would scoop the water out. It was ok but not as good as I would have liked. I understand about the not enough money thing. If your mollies are breeding that well, and I envy you as they don't breed so well for me. Why don't you consider a small cichlid that would enjoy them. Talk about mean but eventually you are going to have to get a bigger pool if this keeps up.

I don't know how good of an arrangement for you, but You could probably get one for $25. Then, at least you wouldn't have to get a bigger thing later. Or, you could use large rubbermad-type storage containers

Right before Platies give birth does their gravid spot lighten up or turn clearish?????????????????????? I have a very pregnant Platy and she is starting to look squarish so I do think she is about to give birth any day now...her gravid spot was very dark but the last couple days it has become clearish or very light...? Can someone tell me if this is normal. Also how do i care for the fry. I do not have another tank, but I do have a breeder net.......Thanx

I think your platy is going to have babies any day now too. If you plan to raise the fry, you should setup a small 5-10gal tank just for them. The momma platy won't know any difference between her babies and food, so most likely she'll eat them. When the babies double in size (usually after 1-2 months), then you can put them back with the parents, just as long as they are no longer a mouthful.

I'm pretty sure it is HITH, it starts with a small hole and the rest of the face is sucked into it until the whole head disappears.

1. It isn't smart to have fish that are small enough to get eaten in a tank with a JD. Maybe if you had bothered to think of that it may have been prevented. Don't blame the fish, blame yourself.

Hi guys, I just bought a betta (from Wal-mart- I had to rescue him!). He is in a gallon bowl with a few stones and a little hide-away thing that he likes to swim in. I have been reading some posts that say that his water should be around 75 degrees. As it is, the temperature is about 68 to 70 degrees. I was wondering, should I heat the water in any way? Also, we bought a black neon tetra that lives in the same bowl as Spunky Monkey, the betta. They seem to be good friends so far (we have only had the tetra for 2 days though). The tetra doesn't seem to be eating anything- I have used flake food, and today I tried blood worms. Still no luck. Any advice?? Thanks and God Bless, Mary Clare

A gallon bowl is too small for even a betta though it can be done. Two fish no way. Black neons are a schooling fish and needs their own company so yours is lonely. Black neons need to be able to stretch out. I'd go with a ten, but a 5 will work. You could put your betta in with 3 black neons and a heater and every one will be much happier.

I use milk jugs for my water. You can just let it sit 24 hours, no lid. However, if you have chloromine in your water you will have to treat it as it does not evaporate. If I am doing a small water change or to top off a tank I use it straight from the tap. Never had any problems whatsoever.

never change the water all at one time. this kills all the "biobugs" in the water, and it has to start cycling all over again. this is why the water may get cloudy. try 50% twice a week

What does "cycling" mean? I have read this term on other postings, and I have no clue what it means. I do partial water replacement during the week, and completely change the water once a week. The water never seems "cloudy." The fish seems happy, and blows bubble nests all the time, I am just wondering if this "tapping" is a normal fish thing to do, or if it is doing it because something is wrong. When he does it, it looks like he is blowing on the glass. Could it just be a "quirk?"

Cycling is the 2-10 week period when good bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. In one of my tanks, I put fish in to soon and some corys suffered nitrite poising. One did not make it. It sounds like a skin infection or parasite. Look on his fins and see if you see anything abnormal. Different colors, worm like objects, spots or anything abonormal. Do not do a water change for one week. He could be stressed out, causing his immune system to not be as strong. Look on his fins and tell us what you see. AJB

He is a blue mutli color betta, has red on his fins, but I noticed that the back part of his tail fin, had a small red spot on it, that has gotten larger since we had him, (3 weeks) and the red spot seems to have moved, because now at the edge of the tail fin, the coloring is clear. His fin that is on the top, that was sort of tattered when we got him, and I figured that it may have been from other fish pecking at him or something. My daughter received him as a gift. He seems happy otherwise, he is eating ok. Feed him BettaMin Flakes, which he is not crazy about, but eats them, TetraMin granules, on the jar it says great for Betta's, and he seems to like those, and twice a week, we feed him Freeze Dried Bloodworms, which he loves. He comes over to the glass when we are near, like he is glad to see us, and he blows bubble nests, like twice a week. I have done lots of reading on the internet, to know how to take care of him, and everything I read said to change the water often, because they love clean water. So now, I am confused.

I would keep up the water changes but make sure you only change about 50% or so. The red in the fins could be ammonia but not likely if you are doing regular water changes. The rubbing on the glass is proably normal. The red spot interests me however. Add salt and keep us updated.

I just wanted to say thank you to you all who have responded to my questions, I forgot to say thanks before. Yes, that res spot on his tail fin is about the size of a pencil eraser head. Like if you dipped it in paint, and then stuck it on the fin. It has definitely changed though, because some of the tailfin, on the edge, is transparent, where color used to be. I will keep an eye on it. Get some aquarium salt and try that? Thanks for all the replies, they are appreciated.

If he's in a one gallon bowl you shouldn't be cycling it. In fact you need to change it every 2 or 3 days...completely with conditioned water. I use Novaqua and Amquel for the ammonia. Is he trying to scratch himself? Maybe that's why he's hitting the glass. The red spot could be a bacterial infection in which case you would need to treat him with an antibiotic such as Maracyn 2 or Kanacyn (strongest fish antibiotic). Keep an eye on it and let us know if it changes.

Thanks, I didn't think I should be cycling. Which I havent been. I have only had the fish for 3 weeks. He is our only one. I have been changing his water completely, every 7 days. That's why I was confused when that other post said I should be cycling, because everything I have read on the internet said to do what I have been doing. I have checked out bettatalk.com, and bettasrus.com, and a few other good ones. I thought maybe he might have fin-rot, because his top fin is crumpled, and then this thing with the red spot on his tail. When he taps on the glass, he does it with his mouth, like he is blowing on it. He doesnt "act" sick, seems normal otherwise, but I will definitely be keeping an eye on how it progresses. Thanks for your suggestions, they are really appreciated.

i was looking at either jack dempseys or those black ones (i forgot what their called...oops) i heard that they are a bit aggressive, but i don't mind. that's why i'd like to get those "types" instead of pirranah...that's my other choice...and info on them while i'm here?

jack dempseys are in fact aggressive, once a full moon you might be able to get a more or less unaggressive one. just look in the tank at the LFS, pick the most submissive jack dempsey, better chances of it not being too agressive. they should be kept in a 30 gallon tank alone or maybe a pair. or what i would do is put it in a 55 gallon with some other agressive fish like firemouths, convicts, etc. be sure to have some caves and other hiding places. pirahnas(spelling? i forget) may get aggressive, if you want them to be happy, you need to have at least a 175 gallon tank in a school of 5 or so. i recommend 200 gallons though. some tankmates that go well with them are pacus, but they get BIG, too small for a tank really. small groups of pirahnas isn't good, they won't be too happy although some people think they can be. smaller groups can be more aggressive and destructive. i would tell anyone to get them unless they have a big tank and intend to get a school of them. it may be hard to clean the tank too, they have been known to get overexcited and bite the tankcleaner's fingers, often needing stiches.

From what I know of these it is very difficult. If you want to breed them put about 6 juveniles in a tank and watch for a pair that is trying to kill everybody else. This will hopefully be male and female.
