How do I clean a used fish tank? Is it safe to use bleach and water? I think I heard somewhere that it's ok if you use 10% bleach and 90% water, but i wanted to make sure before i did something to damage the tank. Let me know ASAP because I need to do something about it today. Thanks

NO NO NO, DO NOT USE BLEACH!!!!!!!!!!! you shouldn't use any soapy stuff for that matter.
use normal hot water instead. for any calcium deposits use vinigar or lemon juice. HTH eb

I have used that solution to clean a tank after a fish death. I think that you just have to make sure you rinse it really well with hot water.

Works great, rinse til you smell no more bleach. Don't put any fish in for 24 hours as any chlorine that is possibly left will dissapate.

I've already tried hot water, but there are some crusty spots, which i suspect might be calcium deposits, but i'm not sure, it could just be algae that died and got cemented to it, because this stuff won't come off with hot water, i have the burns to prove it. I didn't use bleach, i trust your guys judgement, but are vinegar and ammonia really good? i've never heard of those, if i get a second opinion i'll try it, i'm just worried i'll do something stupid and f*** up the tank and i'll be out a lot of money!!

Bleach works well if rinsed well. Vinegar and ammonia are just as toxic to fish if they are not all rinsed out well. The key is rinsing well.
I have found scrubbing works best to remove salt, algae or calcium that has dried on. Carefully use a razor blade to scrape keeping away form the sealant and your fingers and try not to scratch the glass.
A note on ammonia and bleach. Ammonia can be used to cycle a tank instead of using fish. Takes just as long but causes no stress to fish as you do not put any fish in during cycling.
Bleach is chlorine and if you put chlorine remover in the water if takes it out.

Ig you give them 20 gallons per fish, or a 30 gallon evenfor the two of them 25+ years with good care and luck, Do weekly water changes.
I have heard of them living for many years in a bowl or small tank but they won't achieve the full beauty, size and health they are capable of.

Sorry you did not get a response, I try to respond if no one else has. Just must have missed it.
Sounds like bacterial possibly.
If this was my tank I would start with 25% water changes every day, being sure to vacum the gravel very well. See if you can find an antibiotic fish food. I have found it but had trouble getting my fish to eat it, you may have better luck.
Go to your local fish store and see what meds they sell that will treat a bacterial infection.
If the other fish in your tank are Danios and White clouds I would add salt slowly. In just the water you add put 1/2 tsp of salt, aquarium salt. So you are not salting the tank volume just what you add.

I am sorry about your fish and frog. I didn't respond because I'm not an expert and often don't know what to tell people. If it's bacterial, you may need Kanacyn. It's the strongest antibiotic made for fish. I never saw spots that look like
bruises on a fish so I hope this helps.

Barbs are fresh water fish, just be sure to put them in groups. If you go with less than 5 tigers tehy will pick on everything in your tank. I am unsure how many fish you currently have in your tank, but a school of 7 tigers would look great.

I was told I had stocked the tank to quickly so I left the 2 zebras alone for almost a week, then got one tiger. It looked fine for almost a week but now is looking sick like the others did. There are no external symptoms but it hovers tail up not moving much besides shaking.
There are also two small snails in the tank which I recently discovered have laid eggs (have no idea if that is related.
Any ideas why the tigers are dying?
Thanks, Ken

i would say that it might just be barb behavior. mine act weird every once in a while with out the tank environment changing at all, and the floating mouth down and trembling thing is often involved. so i guess it actually isn't weird behavior for my barbs any more. check your tank levels and if everything looks ok just chalk it up barbs being weird.

Takes a tank about 6 weeks give or take to cycle. So patience. You need to give the tank time to build up good biobugs.
Your zebras would like another companion or two, your snails are adding to your bioload. Are these little brown snails?
Tiger Barbs should be in groups of 5 or more, a ten gallon is really to small for them.

Posted by Lynn on September 29, 101 at 20:03:23:
You can keep a goldfish in a ten for awhile.
To get a good idea of what we are talking about as far as size goes.
Get a piece of paper and cut out a goldfish shape, best you can do. About the height of a softball (keeping in mind they ar about this big all the way around), 6 inches long. Add another 5 inches for the tail. This is how big one of mine is, and he/she is still growing, I hope. Put this paper fish on the front of your tank. How does it look?
Fantails are the easiest of the "fancy" ones to keep, orandas are too but sometimes their headgrowth can be a problem. Either would be a good beginner in my opinion.
Proper care, 20 gallons per fish with weekly water changes, a little luck and you could have a finny friend for 25+ years.

About as long as any tank to cycle.
But for fry it is too small unless you do a lot of water changes. Possibly up to 2 times a day depending on how many we are talking. Also keep in mind that any gravel rocks or decorations you are putting in there will displace water so the tank will have less than 2 gallons in it.

Egg Scatterer to be precise. A couple of males will chase her and fertilize the eggs as she runs around scattering them.
Then they will turn around and eat them. One way of avoidng this is to put marbles on the bottom of the tank.

Undergravel filter or hang on the back?
UGF is a little trickier because of the biobugs being in the gravel, hang on the back no problem.
Put the fish with some old tank water into a rubbermaid container or a tank, filter the water if possible or just bubbles.
take that tank apart and put it back together. Fill with 3/4 fresh water, dchlorinated, add in some old water and fish.
For the filter, if it is a hang on the back be sure to keep it running, I take the tube off so the water in the filter keeps ciculating through the filter media. When everything is all back together your tank will go through a small cycling but it should be pretty short and small.
If it is a UGF you will end up recycling the tank.

I'd love to help you out... DON'T make a betta vase. It's cruel to the fish. Read the post I wrote below about "normal betta size." Bettas can live nicely in decent sized bowls, but they need to have exposure to the air (so no plants blocking the top), and they need to be fed proper betta food! As for changes, I use a 1cup pyrex measuring cup (you can use any small cup) and scoop out my betta along with some of his water. He sits in the cup until I'm done changing, then he and the little bit of water go back into the bowl. If your betta is hard to catch with just a cup, then try using a net to "herd" him into the cup. Bettas are great fish, and I hope you take good care of yours.

You can do the the plant thing, just suspend the plant so 50% of the water surface is open and fresh air can get in and out.
And take care of it as you would any fish like Siobann said.
I use by betta tanks to root vine clippings all the time. But the fishes health always comes first.

Yes...please no bettas in a vase with a plant.
It's cruel and inhuman and a tortured life for them. You can use a 2 gallon bowl with marbles and a silk or plastic plant or a small aquarium. I have 3 of these beautiful fish and none of them are in a vase or bowl. All are in aquariums...3, 4, and 5 gallons with clean, conditioned, and 76 degree water. Fed bio gold or baby cichlid pellets, fd bloodworms twice a week,
fd baby brine shrimp occasionally, and Omega One flakes twice a week.

i didn't know a betta vase was a cruel thing to do. :( too bad both of my bettas are in them...
if you want to make one, make sure you use the largest vase possible. my vases are like, HUGE. i've never measured gallons or anything, but the fish have lots of room to swim around and they swim in the roots and my smart fish (sushi) likes to push his rocks around on the bottom and make a little hill to sit on. crazy little fish. :)
if you make a betta vase, change the water VERY FREQUENTLY. the less water there is, the quicker it becomes polluted, and bettas pick up fin rot VERY EASILY. i remember when i rescued my stupid betta (bait) from my office he had a touch of fin rot and i didn't know it. overnight he had rubbed all of his top off! little spines were sticking out and it was so horribly sad. :( i treated his water with betta max, took out the plant and took out the rocks until the rot had gone away. he almost grew back completely! anyway, i gave him a new plant and all that. i've had him for one and half years now.
i've had both my betta vases for about one and a half years. my babies seem happy as long as i 'play' with them. i have both vases on tables in my home where they can watch us walk by and sit down and write and use the computer and stuff.
oh if and when you make the vase, be sure that when you buy the plant, soak the roots in water for at least a week before you plop them in with the fish. i'm paranoid about commercial fertilizers poisoning the fish.
FEED YOUR BETTA EVERY DAY! THEY DO NOT EAT THE PLANT! it is NOT TRUE that they will get sick and die if you feed them regularly. my fish are 1 1/2 years old. they haven't died yet! i feed them twice a day. betta bio gold. they NEVER eat the plant.
okay that was a very very long post. :)

As long as you feed the Betta, and change the water frequently, and take good care of the fish, the vase thing should be ok. Mine seems to like swimming through the roots, it sometimes rests on them. As long as you dont let them grow and take up all the swimming space, and keep your bowl clean, and your fish fed with Betta food, you should be alright.

I also use hot tap water+cold spring water so the temp is just right.

A few weeks ago I mentioned I had read an article on salt. It said table salt with iodine is not going to hurt fish, that this is a myth.
I have been doing an experiment, granted not very scientific but here is my experience after a little over a week.
I Have three male bettas, I keep 1/4 tsp salt per gallon in their water.
In one I started using table salt and one aquarium salt and one marine salt.
No difference in any of them. Nothing has changed.
One of my orandas had an unusual amount of white stuff on his wen so I quarantined him just incase something was wrong. I used table salt in his quarantine tank and it has not affected him at all. Oh, his wen is clearing up just like I thought it would so it was just excessive normal oranda white stuff.
However, table salt would appear to me the expensive way to go. Will keep everyone updated.

Re: (13965.html) Water change
Posted by Sean . G on September 28, 101 at 21:35:56:
It depends on several factors.
How many actual gallons are in the tank.
What kind of fish.
How many fish.
Filtration.
Feeding.
Example: My 20 long has 6 bumble bee gobies and 3 glassfish. Very much understocked so I do a water change evrey two weeks, 10%.
My 55 is very overstocked, 7 goldfish, so I do 20% every day and then once a week I do a 50% in the morning vacuming one half the bottom then in the evening I do 50% again vacuming the other half. In acutallity this is probably equal to about 75% of the water in a less stressful way since I can't just remove the old water the second time.

How much is that in L or gallons?
I change water every week, 50-70%. There is no limit to water change (of course you can't change 100%) but the new water has to be the same temp, ph, kh, gh as the old so the fish are not stressed.
Do as many water changes as necessary in order to keep nitrates under 40.

any thoughts on betta size? they are both from different locations. one is albino (sushi, the smart one) and the other is deep dark blue (bait, the stupid one). i bought sushi, bait i rescued from my office. (it was COOOOLD in there, and they said they would only feed him once a month. i lied and told them it was sick so i could take him home and well... i never brought him back. *evil grin*) both fish are over a year and a half old. My bettas are somewhere in between the sizes you mentioned, somewhat closer to yours, though. I don't think your fish are abnormal. The plant root thing is DEFINITELY a myth. I don't care if people have observed their bettas munching on those stupid roots, bettas are carnivorous and don't survive on plants. You're doing well to feed them food actually intended for them. They should be fed no more than they will eat in a few minutes; more and you're just fouling up the water. Fish are healthier when they're a little on the hungry side (though once a week is ridiculous!) Your fish sound beautiful. Best of luck!

Here is my theory that I have mentioned several times.
Betta Mills.
These guys are being bred so fast with no thought to quality and they are being weakened by it.
Couple that with this idea that bettas can eat off the roots and you have sick small bettas.
Even if you buy/rescue one it could be sickly because of the rapid rate these guys are being bred. No matter how well we take care of them.
At least thsi is my thought.

Hey, i was wondering if anyone could help me. my catfish has suddenly stopped eating. he refuses to eath everything i've put in the tank. i've tried the flake food he normally loves, the sinking pellets, the blood worms...but nothing will work. he just swims past the food, not even glancing at it. He seems his normal energetic self, but im worried about him not eating...is there anything else i can try?...i even got the flakes wet so they would sink down to him before the other fish had a chance to eat them...but nothing has worked....ANY information on the Pictus Catfish would be VERY helpful....thanks

I've had my community freshwater tank about a month and a 1/2 and now everything inside (fake plants, gravel, stones) is covered w/ brown spots. Anyone know what caused them and what I should do to get rid of them????

Comes from overfeeding, too many fish or water with too high a nitrates. Too much light is also another factor.
What size tank, how many fish, filtration, water changes and what and how often are you feeding?

What kind of fish are you planning on introducing to the tank? You would usually leave the bag to float for about 15 minutes so that both temp. can be the same. After that, get a good size net and scoop the fish out gently and into the water. Don't pour the water(that's in the bag) into the tank water, because there could be some chemicals in it that could change the quality of your water inside the tank.

Partly depends on the type of fish, territorial cichlids or gentle cories?
I like to rinse the bag off in tap water first to remove anything that if anything got on the bag does not get into my tank.
Then I float the bag for 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the bag.
I then gradually add some of my tank water to the bag, about 50% of what is in the bag. Then I gently remove the fish from the bag into the tank.
Ideally, you should be quaranting your fish before introducing them to your tank.

EB are my initials too! Wow, i've never seen this before! I can go as Emma, or fish_fan, or betta_luver.....post a reply. we'll work something out! (i think that if I use MY name, and you use eb, everyone will get confused so either YOU can change your name or i'll post a message. I rather post a message cause I think EB is boring for me.) ok, enough! i'll go as Emma. you can go as eb, eb II or erin, etc. but please, I WILL GO AS EMMA OK?
