Really appreciate the help. Can I add another fish that isn't a gold fish to my tank. I am really wishing I knew goldfish were so messy because I think I would have opted for another type of fish so I could have a couple in the tank.
The tank has a air pump and a bottom filter. How often do you change the air pump filter? The fish does seem very happy now that he has been moved. I hate how all those pictures on the fish tank boxes in the store show so many fish!
Thanks again and Happy Friday.

Well there are two problems with adding another fish with goldfish. Well, two of the main problems anyway.
One is golds like cool water, or room temp, where tropicals like it warm.
Soe fish like The white cloud minnow like the cool water but their food requirements are different. So the two differences are temp and food.
Then if you use algae eaters they like to suck the slime off the goldfish and can make big nasty sores.
I am unsure about your air pump filter question.
Air pumps do not have filters, I am assuming you are running a UGF. These need to be vacummed weekly, and really do not work well with goldfish, especially as the fish grows older.
If you are really not completely happy with the goldfish you might be able to return it to the store and get different fish. Just be sure you know what their full size will be before buying them.

Do not add table salt...go buy aquarium salt....it cost about a dollar and a half, and use about a teaspoon...
A betta can live a year and a half to two years...more if taken care of (this is what i hear) A betta that lays on the bottom of his bowl is not good...are you using tap water with conditioner(stress coat) what are you feeding him? betta bites, blood worms, brineshrimp are best....He isn't in a vase with a flower is he? if so please remove him...put him in a one to two gallon bowl....change his water and re-condition it every three days, making sure the temp is about the same-room temp...add a nice fake plant that he can lay on or rest in....if you do all this i would think your betta will perk up and be okay...however if he has an infection you will need to treat...keep an eye on him and his behavior and note any changes on his body or tail...let us know if he doesn't perk up. katie

I will give you a brief breakdown on the project you have in mind, but before you do this read read read read read.
The male and the female might kill each other but one won't eat the other.
First you need a ten gallon tank and lots of smaller tanks or jars of at least 1/2 gallon, but opinions vary on this size.
The male builds a bubble nest then after the eggs are there chases the female away.
You may get a few hundred babies, which need shallow water to grow properly.
As they grow you need to cull out the deformed ones. Then as you start to be able to tell who is male you need to put them in their own little tanks/jars.
These need to be kept around 80 degrees.
Water needs to be changed daily.
Then you need to find homes for possibly a hundred fish when you are done.
It is not as easy as my abbreviated version looks, so read read read read.

How are you filtering this tank?
Being such a small tank I would not put a very large rock in there. Also do not be tempted to add any more fish, the two you have is all that will fit.
Chances are your female platy is already pregnant.
Where do you plan on putting all the babies.
Plan on frequent water changes with this small a tank also.

How is the tropical fish selection and foods for them? When my dad was stationed there in the 60's, during the great quake, he kept fish but made his own tanks. Guess where I get the fish bug from?
My favorite food is made there in Alaska, Omega One. hard to find around here but I love the stuff. My fish look and act so much better when I feed it to them.

I have had a goldfish, George, living happily in about a 2 gallon tank. My son won two more goldfish at the fair

It looks like a lot of blood has come to the surface. Do any of you know what this is and what has caused
it? I just took the two new fish out and put them in a separate tank hoping George will get better. He's still eating.

Posted by Carol on September 06, 101 at 17:28:16:
As goldfish can reach a foot in length and that is body length, no fins you can see where this tank is way to small for one.
When you added two more the ammonia went through the roof and your fish suffered ammonia burn as a result.
Now you are thinking but George has lived happily in this tank. Reality is he has survived, but his life will be shortened in this tank. These fellas can live 25 + years with a little luck and a lot of care.
Yes people keep them in samll tanks like this all the time, but the fish live a short life.
And yes, goldfish only grow as large as their tanks, because 9 out of ten times they die.
A ten gallon tank is fairly cheap and could house these guys for a short time or you could go with a 20 long, longer being better than taller for goldfish. But eventually these guys will need larger quarters to be happy.

An average size gold fish needs 10-30 gallons of water to be happy. Do be supprised if the fair fish die, they are often the 12cent feeder fish seen at stores. I have never heard of any thing like that though. Leaking blood isnot good though. If it continues, try a little aquarium salt. (half dose at first. If he dosen't recover after about a day or two, put the other half dose in)

My main concern was for my first goldfish, George, who developed the red gills after a week with the fair fish. I didn't realize I was attached to George until his gills became red. He was my .39 Wal-Mart fish. I moved the Fair fish to a large tupperware container until I get a used larger tank (>10 gallons). George is recovering now that he is alone in his tank again. It must have been caused by ammonia burns as Karen suggested. But, now the Fair fish are growing on me and I'm concerned about them. It's always a sign when you give them names. Now, Phil and Wade are healthy little Fair fish and hopefully they will soon be reunited with George living in one big aquarium. I never thought I'd enjoy tending to fish as much as I do. Let's just hope that George isn't Georgia. Thank you for the good advice.

Like Katie said, as long as the flow of water is not to strong, and there are no fin nippers, he will be fine.
Actually, he would probably do BETTER in the community tank. You might have some fights at first, but it will settle down. I would put him in the community tank or two.
Bettas are just like other fish. Just because some people think because they are hardy, they can all but feed their fish root beer and keep them in any thing but the toilet. Not so. I would recommend about 2.5 gallons of water for a betta. I would keep them at least in a ten gallon.

I guess I've been lucky...no infections but I don't cycle any tanks...change the 5 every 3 weeks
because no measureable ammonia at that point. Change the 4's every week to 10 days. Sometimes it's a pain but all of them started in 2 gallon

I just bought a new Beta today, from a reputable, pet store, that's main interest is fish. After I brought my fish home I was looking and 1 of his gills is sticking out differently than the other. He is a very pretty beta, he is all the colors of other Beta fish. But this concerns me about his gill. Should I take him back? Has anyone had a Beta that has this problem, and been OK. I don't want to get attatched to a pet, and then it pass away.

If he is eating and swimming normally. Nothing else unusual about him, breathing normally.
My guess is a genetic defect. They are common in these fish, most are bred in "betta mills", the goal being to breed as many as fast as possible.

Hi,
I bought a gold fish the other day and had him in a bowl ...well within 12 hours the bowl was murky so I just bought a five gal. tank since I really don't want more than 2-3 at a time.(I am sure I will change my mind later) Anyway I have the new tank set up but have some basic questions.
How long before I can add my fish, How often should I clean the water (20% a mnth?), How often do you clean the whole tank and start from scratch?, How long should I wait before adding another fish? I did add the chemicals to the water since it is tap water. Last question...do I need to worry about the temp of the water?
Thanks so much!!!

I agree with Koko except, in a 5 gallon tank, don't add another fish.
These guys are "dirty", they poo a lot and the ammonia builds up pretty fast.
A 20% water change per week for goldfish.
Room temp is fine.
Now for cleaning from scratch. Only two times to ever do this. Something got into the tank that should not have or an undergravel filter.
How are you filtering this tank?
My formula for golds per gallon is 15 gallons minimum per fish.
Cut out a piece of paper in the shape of your fish. Now of it is a comet make it 18 inches long, fantail at least 10 inches long, that is just the body. You can see they need a lot of room. Longer is better than high.

ok, first of all, you shold buy him one bud, max. Goldfish are really dirty, and, believe it or not, can grow to be about 6". lots of people will tell you they need 15 gal or something each, but that is only when they are full sized. You'll probably have to get a bigger tank in 6-12 months (if you have a PETsMART near you, you'll probably find one there at a very decent price) When you get a new tank, you may as well get a 20 gal or bigger (I know, it sounds HUGE for that little goldfish, but he'll appreciate.), that way, you shouldn't have 2 upgrade for a very long time.
For cleaning, never change all the water. It stresses the fish, which makes them "forget" to make more of the mucasy coating that covers their bodies & protects them from parasites & stuff. 20% every week for the first 3 weeks & then 20% every other week is good. You don't have to worry about their water temp, because they can live in very cold water. Try not to let it get warm (~80 degrees) for more than 2 or 3 weeks at a time, cuz it's not goood for them. hope this helps!

Hi again, aquarists and gurus.
Tanks are cycling happily along now. I'm not a frazzled mess anymore.
But one tetra has a white lesion on it's lip and wound or ulcer on his side. It's amazing how the other tetra goes right for it too.
However, I don't believe that the other tetra caused it, I suspect disease. My question is, how soon before you see results once you start medicating. I am using TriSulfa (only 2 doses so far). When should I abandon this and try something else? Any ideas what this is?
The ulcer is not red, it's flesh colored. It is slightly raised. The bump on the lip is white and doesn't effect the little guy's appetite whatsoever. He still eats like a pig.
Thanks for any advice.

I have two questions...The first one is not why I came here but after reading your front page article about bettas I am in a panic.
I just made my own betta vase this past weekend and brought it to the office for my desk. I am feeding my betta Betta Bio-Gold every other day. The Peace Lily is in a plastic cup that I have cut a hole in. Is this enough space for air to get in?
Here is the really scary question. I used distilled water in my vase!! And now I read that it is a NO-NO!! A friend of mine was going to Walmart during lunch and I ask her to purchase two gallons of spring water for me. Is that okay? Why is distilled bad? Anything else (other than changing the distilled water) that I can do to make sure my betta pal is okay?
I will put my other question in a different post.
Your help is very much appreciated.

Re: (13018.html) Newbie Needs Help

Ok, here goes.
Distilled water and most every bottled water I have ever seen is too pure. There a minerals and stuff in water that is removed in those waters.
If it says pure, distilled, ro - reverse osmosis you need to either add to the water or do a 50-50 mix of everyday water and the bottled stuff.
Second, if you have found a way to lift the peace lily up high enough so that 75% of the water surface is open your betta will in all likely hood do all right. Feed him at least two times a day.
However, if you truly want your finny friend to thrive give him a 2 gallon tank of his own.

I know I will have many more questions. Have just purchased a 55 gal tank and will begin setup this week. Going this evening to purchase pumps and BioWheel to do start up. have been giving consideration to what fish grouping I want. Maybe Tinfoils, Balas, Gouramis, loaches and a few spiny eels. Haven't decided yet : ) Anyway it will be a few days before I am even ready to start adding fish. I already have a 25 gallon freshwater tank and may change it into a reserve tank.

I am suspecting neon tetra disease here.
If that is what is happening there is nothing you can do for it (unless someone has heard of a new treatment?)and it is highly contagious.
I would not add salt, I am worried that as neons don't handle salt to well it could stress the fish out even more.
I'd wait it out, you may lose all the neons but do not add anymore.
Or, another thought after rereading your post, is your betta harassing the neons?

The one time I dealt with NTD it did not affect any of the other fish in the tank, and I had four different types. Black Phantoms, Blind Caves, and Black Tetras plus the neons.
As for Bumble Bee Gobies. One of my favorites, I have four in a brackish with three black mollies.
Want to add three more bumble bees.
They are fin nippers, just two and one will destroy the other. I'd get at least three, could go 4 in a 5 gallon but that is reaching to the outer limit.
They are a brackish water fish which means they can live in freshwater to marine, but do best in a lower salinity than marine. i use 1 tbsp per gallon in my tank.
They will tear apart a bettas fins and he would not like the higher salinity. They can also be a challenge to feed.

Keep in mind what I have told you about the bumble bees being brackish, ottos and cardinals are less tolerant of salt so I would not any salt in this tank.
However, with the spare two gallon around, if the bees do not do well you can put them in there, a back up plan to boot.

Properly landscaped so they can form boundries without seeing each other I suspect you could put in two pair.
With cichlids it is more a matter of floor space to form their territories so a longer wider tank will hold more than a tall narrow one.

I'd recomend looking for a saltwater board.
However in my studies I am thinking of using a new filter system I have seen called ecosystems.
It uses mud and caulerpa to filter the water and supposedly needs no protein skimmer and makes for a more stable enviroment for the fish.
I am thinking of a starting a small reef tank myself.

He is not throwing himself to the rocks, he just swims viscously in circles and in between the roots of the plant. I change his water once a week. I use filtered water and add the stress coat and let it sit for about 4 hours, or until room temperature. I would really like to try and breed him, because he just has beautiful aqua marine fins. I have read up on breeding, but I have never done it befor, and I'm scared that I would not get a female fish and they would kill each other. Have you ever breeded Beta's befor?

No I haven't done any breeding and I really don't want to. It takes a lot of time and space and money! You have to have a lot of jars. You have to
condition the fish for several weeks before breeding. Yes the female can die. Breeding is not for the inexperienced. A lot of knowledge must be gathered by reading, reading, reading to learn what to do.
You need to use spring(bottled) or conditioned tap water for your betta...not filtered water. Filtered or distilled water has all the minerals that fish need removed from it. Your betta will get sick from this kind of water over time.

PLEASE move him to a 1.5 or 2 gallon bowl. Are you
changing his water at least 3 times a week? Need to do this with a vase or bowl. He
could be darting around from high ammonia and nitrites. Condition his water with Amquel for ammonia and Novaqua to remove chlorine and other metals. His water temp should be 76 to 78 degrees.
If you put him in a bowl he will live a longer, healthier, and happier life. I like small aquariums best but that's not feasible for some people. Give him a nice soft silk plant to rest on and some glass (flat, marbles, or sea glass), or rocks in the bottom. You can add one tsp. aquarium salt (not table salt) per gallon to his water but it isn't really necessary. To much salt can cause problems too.

I went back and re read your post. When I was cycling, I changed the filter in my 3 gallon Eclipse every 2 weeks as stated on the packaging. A 2 gallon tank is very hard to cycle. Most bettas can end up with fin rot or worse in this situation. I think that weekly changes in a 2 gallon conditioned with Amquel for ammonia and Novaqua for chlorine and metals and water at 76 to 78 degrees is much more healthy for bettas. Just my 2 cents!

The way I heard it described that I thought was pretty acccurate is all the biobugs are looking for a home.
In reality, cloudy water is one of two things, USUALLY.
Are you overfeeding? Do you do water changes?
Then the most likely cause is your tank is not yet cycled, the biobugs in the filter eat up all the stuff that leads to cloudy water. (This is the simplified version)
I would do more frequent water changes til the biobugs catch up, could take 6 weeks give or take.

How many inches do you count for a ghost shrimp? I am counting the Rasboras as 1" each and the loach as 2", and the oto as 1". Thank you. Also, what is the maximum amount you can have in a ten gallon? I thought about adding 1 cherry barb to encourage the Rasbora to school tighter. I added a Penguin Mini Bio-wheel and kept the 5/15 Whisper filter that came with the tank, so filteration is not a problem. I vacuum and change 20% of the water every other week.

4 tetras aren't enough. they must be in a school of 5 or more. yes, you should only have a school and a pair or some single.
here's 2 ideas:
1) 6 neon tetras, a pair of Guppies, a Corydoras Catfish and a Java Fern Plant-undergravel filter
2) this is what's in MY tank (it's a 10 gal)
5 neon tetras
5 cardinal tetras

You could go brackish with bumble bee gobies. I love the little guys, they chase and nip at each other and are very active. They like a little current to play in if you provide it. 5 in a ten gallon would do well.
They can be a little finicky when it comes to eating, frozen daphnia seems to be the hands down favorite in my tank, any small live foods, freeze dried bloodworms are nibbled on. Flake food or other prepared food, forget it.

I agree with Eddie. 2 rasboras will not be happy, should be in groups of 5 or more. And a single fish that is not a typical schooler to encourage their schooling behavior. I can't think of any right now that would fit in a ten.
I like cories in groupls of three or more, they really do like their own company, but in a community ten I would not go more than 3.
I would start with just one schooling species and see if you really want two. A ten gallon is pretty small for two schools.

Not most cichlids.
Most of the tetras and barbs should be ok, just make sure at their full size they won't eat your neons. Danios would also do well.
Glass fish and glass catfish, kuhli loaches or cories for the bottom. Hatchet fish for the top. Depends if you want a schooling fish or a single or pair of center piece fish.

The guppy just had babies and some are in the bottom in the moss with a couple of baby platys. Other guppy babies are in breeder box with airstone until they get a tad bigger. Rest of the babies, I will take to my other tank that is cycling right now. They all get along just fine and seem to like the same temps. Oh, I also have 3 otos. I am probably done stocking the tank and will let nature take its course on babies. If I do find another neat fish or two, I will probably add down the line. I do have live plants in the tank as well. Keeping fingers crossed everything continues on the even keel.

Re: (12938.html) Filters
Posted by Chris on September 04, 101 at 16:15:02:
It lays on the bottom of the tank under the gravel. Powered by an air pump which pulls the water through the gravel. Your filter media is the gravel.
To clean you need a gravel vacum.
There are generally two camps on these. Either the can't stand them camp or the love them camp.
I love them, but not with goldfish, messy fish or cichlids or any other fish that will dig up the bottom. An understocked tank of small fish works well with these.
Live plants usually do poorly with a UGF, and there is not a lot of water flow unless you add to them.
Then there is the reverse UGF that seems a little more popular. It pushes the water up instead of pulling it down, keeping the debris out in the water column where a hang on the back filter can pick it up easier.
Also, in a heavily decorated tank you can get a lot of dead areas with a UGF that when disturbed can poison your fish.
But all in all I like them.

Just a thoght: I was able to set up a livebearer tank for an amazing $35, by buying everything @ PETsMART:
10 gal. TopFin aquarium: $13
elite 801 aerator: $13
2 Kg gravel (4-5lbs): $4
8'airline tubing: $2
sponge filter(on sale) $3
------
$35
I hooked up the airline tubing to the aerator, and then to the sponge filter. The sponge filter was the only thing I purchased on sale.
Pretty amazing, huh?
oh: if you need aquarium salt, just use pickling or canning salt, but make sure that it says "no additives". This is basically non-iodized salt

If you are looking for more than a betta I'd go at least 5 gallons.
However, assuming this is a done deal and you have the tank, be sure and get it cycled properly.
This size tank seems to me to be a good candidate for fishless cycling using ammonia.
You will need a fish that does not mind frequent water changes, bettas being a good choice.
A bumble bee goby would do well if you can heat it, they prefer brackish water and only get an inch and a quarter or so long, but only one as they get to be fin nippers if not kept in a group.
Three zebra danios, they are nice easy little fish that are very active.
Or, I have seen a lot of websites on mini reef systems using these tiny tanks. Can't recomend them though as i have not done one myself.

for a two you couldn't put much in there, a golfish if taken care of can get up to ten to twelve inches anyway...and live twenty so years....my oppinion is a betta, or a couple of guppies... I went with a five and have a school of neon tetras (5) and a betta and a apple sail! And that is pushing the limit! but i am happy with my five and there are quite a few schooling fish you could go with...or maybe a pair of fish that get about two inches or so...good luck...but do take everyones advice...

beginners cichlid. They bread easy, easy enough to sex and they do take care of their young for a time. They are generally fairly cheap and easy to come by. I have found the best way for me to sex them is by their top fin. The males is usually a little longer and pointed, the females rounded or blunt.
Anybody vote for the firemouth.

plain gravel is good, have some caves and like 2 or so inches of gravel. the couple will dig a hole most likely under or by a cave. the parents will keep guard of the area for a while. the eggs will hatch after a couple of days. wait until you see the fry swimming before you start feeding. you can feed them baby brine shrimp or or some EggLayer baby food, but i suggest brine shrimp as to me they are better. they can lay about 200-400 eggs. they will take care of the young for about two weeks, then they start over again. during that time, if the babies are not removed, the parents will or might kill them to have room for a new batch of young.

They are aggressive and territorial, will eat anything that fits in its mouth! They become more aggressive during spawning.
Water temp would ideally be around 68 - 75° F (20
Keep tank clean, do regular water changes.
As for telling males from femalesit is difficult to tell Convicts apart when young.
As they mature the male develops a hump on his forehead, his anal and dorsal fins will be much longer then the females.
The females are generally darker in color, smaller in size.
Suggested information: Use a tank that is atleast 20 gallons for one pair of convicts.
Make sure there is lots of hiding places because the Convict is a 'Cave fish'.
These fish will spawn and spawn again and you will end up with HUNDREDS of Convicts!
I got this information from a book I have on cichlids, from the pages about the convict.

Right now we have the cray fish in a bowl with gravel, a plant and a rock that he can hide under. He is about 2" long. My question is can I put the cray fish in w/ my gold fish????? Also, if anyone knows what exactly to feed a cray fish could you please let me know. Right now he is happily munching on goldfish flakes, but I am sure there must be something better for him. Crayfish will eat fish if they can catch them, and they will prowl around at night. They also are escape artists so be sure you have a secure lid on that bowl.
I have never kept a crayfish, but if I did would probably feed it shrimp pellets and turtle pellets.

I'm not sure how long they live, since after that incident I returned him to the lake where I got him, but my guess would be about 10 years, max. (I had him for about 2 or so) As for food, he would eat fish food quite happily, especially the sinking pellets. or, you could feed him turtle pellets, raw/cooked meat, cut into little pieces, or cheese. For his aquarium, obviously, he doesn't need much space, but the more he has, the happier he'll be. Just make sure he can't get out, cuz they pinch! They like lots of hiding spaces, and maybe a big rock or something sticking out of the water for him to climb up on.
Hope this helps!

He has been unwell now for about a week. Have been treating him w/ capsules I was given from the petshop (orange capsules; green powder) that is supposed to treat fungal & bacterial infections. The lady at the petstore seemed to think he had fungus on his gills and that was why he was sinking. Does this sound right? What else can I do for him? Why is he sinking?

Swim Bladder Disorder more than likely.
Feed him a variety of foods, dry pellets or flakes should be soaked first. Frozen peas warmed up and squished out of their shell a few times a week. Don't feed him for 24 hours then feed him peas every day for about three days.
He may always have a tendency to sink, some seem to get beyond it with moist or pre soaked food. He can live a long life, if it is real bad and he really struggles to get to the top you might put him in a shallow aquarium.
You mentioned he swims with only his front fins. Does he move his tail?

Thanks Karen. I'm really hoping he will be okay. He has been a little irregular as far as his tail goes - for a few days he wasn't using it at all, then he started to use it (but not his lower fins) and now he is back to just using his front fins (not using his tail). How do I know when he is okay to eat? The lady at the pet shop said not to feed him anything while he is sick and that the uneaten food can wreck havoc with his water. Should I put in a few de-shelled peas and leave them for 15 minutes and if he hasn't eaten them, then take them out? He now has an air pump and seems a little happier, although very weak (the current from the pump seems to really take it out of him and it isn't even that strong!) Thank you for your help.

How often do you do a water change? I am wondering if the ammonia has gotten a little too high. Can you separate him into his own little tank? I'd do daily water changes, do you dechlorinate your water?
I'd offer him the peas and take them out if he does not eat them. She is right, if he is not eating it will mess up his water.
