Good news - Bobo made it thru the wood bad driftwood bit, well sorta made it. The LFS guy said that on top of the velvet he also has a baterial problem (swollen eyes) and he said to put in penicillin (By Aquatronics) and also a couple drops of Aquarisol to treat the velvet. He is eating good today and his Ph is still 8. (Ok Karen, I am not going to worry about the ph anymore - I learned my lesson the hard way) (-: His Nitrites, Nitrates, Ammonia are all O. I put the first dose of penicillin in last night (with no carbon) and he made it thru the night and his eyes actually look a little less swollen. He still has all that "velvet" junk on him - I am afraid to add the aquarisol. Is it ok to treat with both at the same time? Has anyone here done this? Help me please Thank you.

Yes, many of the meds will kill your biobugs so take teh filter media out and rinse it really well. Do daily water changes to keep the ammonia in check.

Black is unstable color in godfish. Black Moores are telescope eyes that stay black. I have one that's body is over 5 inches, his tail another 5. He was black and gold when I bought him but is turning gold. The different sizes could just be genetic, or one is getting more food. I am wondering what size tank they are in. Goldfish need to be in at least a 20 gallon long tank to live a full and healthy life, 25+ years.

I've had goldfish for years. It seems that some may initially be one color (like black, or tan, etc.) yet as they get older, they turn orange or yellow. it is natural for them, so don't worry. you could say it's similar to children. Some children are born with one eye color, but when they get a little older it changes! :)

I need to know what kind of test it is. What came with it. A test tube or dipping strips or something else? You should have a card that shows colors on it of yellow blue and green that show you what Ph leval you have, You should know what your ph is before buying fish. most petstores will test the water for you.

Depends on what kind of fish you want and what you plan on doing with them. If just keeping for pets and if the ph is close to the ideal leave it alone. Fish are somewhat adaptable and messing with the ph can cause problems. If breeding then some need it to be more exact. Find out what your water is and find the fish that go best in that water and you will have better luck. As for how that test works I do not really know, I have not tested my water in years.

I'm not sure about balloon bellied mollies to be exact. I have dalmation mollies which I was told (like every other mollie) They are nippers. I was told they'd nibble fins and such but probably wouldnt hurt anything. They're just more agressive than some of the others. I don't know if its different from mollie to mollie but from what I was told when I chose mine, the majority of the mollies are nibblers.

Bettas need Betta food, One brand is Betta Bites. He could die without it. They also need frozen or freeze dryed bloodworms and or brine shrimp to thrive, your other fish will appreciate these things as well. Please do some research about the fish your going to buy before you get them, or talk to the people in your petstore. They can usually help you.

Mine do fine on tropical flake foods and a variety of frozen foods. It is a good idea to use betta bites. But give variety. It sometimes will take a betta a few days to settle in and start eating, so let him rest a few days and see if he does not start.

Posted by kathy on September 09, 101 at 11:05:06:
Depends. What is your filter? If it is a UGF you can not use sand and the gravel is your filter so you do not want to change it all at once. If it a hang on the back kind you can make the switch, swords should be fine with it. However, I have found if the sand is more than 1/8 inch deep and not thouroughly vacummed gasses can build up that are toxic to fish when disturbed and smelly. Sand can be sharper and harder on a cory so be sure of the sand you buy. Cories do like to have their own company, maybe you could add one more.

Bettas dont belong in bowls. They should have at least two gallons of water. Does he have access to the surface of the water? He needs that to survive. What do you feed him, he needs betta bites and bloodworms and maybe some brine shrimp. The water temperature should be about 70.

He may have fin rot. Are his fins tattered? Do they look like shredded streamers? If so you should treat for 5 days with Maracyn 2...possibly 10 days. You should be changing his water, making sure it is conditioned to get rid of chlorine and other metals (I use Novaqua) every 2 or 3 days. If you use bottled spring water you should still do this. I also use Amquel to bind up harmful ammonia. My bettas are in small aquariums. His water should be kept at about 75 to 76 degrees. The Maracyn tablet will have to be divided into small chunks for your bowl.

Depends inpart on what you are looking for. You can collect rocks from clean waters, rinse them rally well. Not all rocks are good for aquariums so be sure of what you are using. I take drift wood from lake superior, shells, coral or rocks from a beach, just make sure the area you are collecting from is legal. Clean all these really well. I saw a tank where someone had used a childrens toy plastic barn farm house and fences and plastic animals. I thought personally this was a little wierd. Just make sure it is aquarium safe. In other words won't leach chemicals into the tank, or fall apart.

Sandstone, most metals and painted objects are big time problems. You have to be sure if it is painted it is non toxic. Anything that may have been washed in or exposed to chemicals. And to be sure soak in a bucket of water, changing the water every few days and see how it affects the water.

It's been two weeks and now they're laying eggs again. Shouldn't it be a little longer before they can have eggs again? One solution could be to seperate the females and males, but I have no more room to put them in. I only have a 20 gallon tank for them, and that's too small for 5 pairs of convicts. Besides, I don't want to buy more and more tanks because I don't have space to put them. What do you think I should do?

Nothing you can do except separate them, convicts are like the guppies of the cichlid world. You can let them raise the young, they will be busy with them and will slow down a little. Of course some young might get eaten. But with as well as they are breeding for you that really should not be a problem. I suppose you could keep the tank a little cooler and not quite so ideal to them, but the fish may not respond well to this and it might not make a difference.

I'm planning to move the remaining pairs of convicts into a 60 gallon tank, since my brother won't be needing it anymore. This way, it will give them enough space to breed and swim around. Is it true that sometimes when you change water to a fish tank, the pairs will reproduce again? Because I've changed the water this weekend to the 20 gallon tank, and another female just laid more eggs. What I know is that if there's too much ammonia present in the water, then they won't reproduce or be able to do well. But I've done water changes every week, and it seems as when I change the water, they have more eggs.

Yes, like I said, once they get started they do not want to stop. Did you want to breed them or was this a surprise? Do you have a plan for all the babies? Had a petstore here locally that had about 500 babies in a 29 gallon and he was selling them for 10 cents each just to get rid of them. Fresh water can induce spawning in some fish but never let it get bad to where it stresses the fish out.

Well it seems as if another female is planning to have her eggs again. This is the first time this ever happen to me. I guess you can say that this was a surprise to me. Actually, the second time around, because the first time I already knew it was coming, but after a week and a half later they're already having eggs again. I was shocked at first, because it was too soon for them to reproduce again. I don't have any plans for the babies yet. Maybe I'll see what I can do to sell them to the local pet store, or give them away to friends. On the other hand, I can use them as live food for the others too, even though it might be cruel.

I'm concerned over the bloating in the 8's belly... it is more puffed out today than it was yesterday, and more stuck out on his left side. he also isn't very interested in the silversides or brineshrimp(both are frozen)that i've given them. but he tends to try and eat cichlid pellets- although until today, he'd then spit them back out all chewed up. maybe he'd go after shrimp pellets? i waant to make sure they get enough food, of the right kinds. (anything except worms--i guess that is the one thing that i have an almost phobic aversion to. i was barely able to bring myself into buying dried bloodworms to vary the diet for some of my fish, and nobody'll touch the stuff.)

A few problems here, let's see if we can straighten it out. 1. A five gallon tank is to small for one figure 8 puffer much less anything else in with it. It will grow to about 2 1/2 inches long. 2. While they are fairly peaceful while young they get more aggressive as they get older. Green puffers about the same thing. They also like a brackish tank, Aquarium salt. Not sure what a red cardinal cichlid is, but I know of no cichlid that is going to live in a 5 gallon for long. As for feeding feeder fish, they can bring disease into the tank as they are rarely ever properly cared for or fed. So we now have three choices. 1. Leave things as they are and watch the fish slowly or quickly die, you might get one survivor. 2. Get a larger tank, general recomendation is about a 20 long for one puffer. 3. Return the fish you have to the store and let's start over. If you have no room or money for anything larger than a 5 but like the puffer I do have a suggestion. The Bumble Bee Goby. Just over an inch long, 4 could do well in a 5 gallon tank. Add at least 1 tsp marine salt per gallon of water. If the ones you get are currently in fresh water slowly add the salt over a period of time, they do better in salty water. The biggest draw back is they prefer live or frozen food and tend to turn their nose up at dry foods. or we could make other suggestions also.

(btw: the cichlid is 2in long.) i am introducing salt into the tank slowly so as not to shock the fish. i was hoping that the puffers might eat the feeder fish, that's why i got them... i'd appriciate any more suggestions

Hmmm, I really do want to help you here. You seem to like larger fish, which I do appreciate. And while I have personally known people who have kept an angel in a ten and had them grow out to a full and beautiful fish, But two in a ten? And I have personally seen a pleco that is 2 feet long. Kuhli loaches will do well in a ten if they have hiding places. There is just not much for us to work with. Can you get a larger tank? Or another 10 or two? If you can not upgrade or add to your tanks and are unable to find homes for any fish here is all I can offer you. Do daily water changes, if teh fish are still young 10% but as tehy grow you will have to do more. Eventually the pleco will out grow the tank and the angels will probably do allright. One puffer will kill the other and anything else in the tank but the one will hopefully be very healthy. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Bad idea. It is not fat that makes them grow fast, only makes them fat. Goldfish need about 30 gallons to achieve full size, unless we are talking comets which need more room. And encouraging anything to grow at an accelerated rate is not good for that living thing. But I am curious why you would want to speed up the growth? Put him in the largest tank, feed him a well balanced varied diet and keep his water very clean and he will grow quickly enough and might be around for more than 25 years.

I have a 30 gal. flatback hex tank with only one cichlid in it: he offed the others. He's my only "child" and about 2 weeks ago, I noticed these lil while things that are no bigger than the head of a pin on the sides of my tank. They were scurring around like air bubble, but they aren't. i scraped some of them off and they came back. Then, to add insult to injury, I noticed something else on the side of the tank walls. Thesse lil whitish-clear things that are about 1/4 inch long and the diamiter of about a piece of hair. They kinda squiggle on the walls like an earth worm. But, when they loose contact they quiggle in the whater flipping and look like a bird in flight. I went to a fish store and explained these problems to them. They suggested that I have "flukes" and reccomended anti-fluke Rx. I've used it now, there is no change but, they got worse! The Rx didn't seem to faze them and came back with a vengeance! I've been trying to fight thes things, but it looks like I'm fighting a loosing battle. I clean the tank every saturday and only feed him about 2 times a week. It can't be from dirty water or over feeding. What the heck are these things and how can I get rid of them? I've have tanks for over 15 years and NEVER had a problem like this...Pleasse Help ME :(

I have been hearing more and more about these things. They are not flukes, and it is said they come from overfeeding. However, as you are only feeding twice a week I am more concerned that your fish is getting enough to eat. What kind of cichlid is he and what are you feeding him? I would do daily water changes being sure you get the gravel vacummed really well til these things disappear. Feed him a pellet or flake food, what he can eat up in a short period of time. I suggest a daily feeding, but if twice a week has him growing and healthy that works for you.

He's getting plenty to eat, his belly is big and full all the time. I feed him pellets, flakes, and guppies. Of course not all at the same time, I alternate. He's a Jack Dempsey Cichlid. I've been tearing his house apart, daily, doing a complete cleaning of all the plants, gravel, rocks, ect... [boiling them to kill anything there] but no matter what i do, they just won't go away. I do vacumm the gravel when I clean, so I guess I really don't know where they come from or hide. I even went as far as to have the H2O tested, everything came back as being in normal tollerences. Today, i completely tore his house down and scrubbed it with hot salt water. About 4 hours after I filled it back up with H2O, w/o plants, gravel, ect...they're back. Chipper [fish] isn't too happy with my "house cleaning" as for when this happens, he ends up in a giant snifter glass. [sorry] Any other suggestions? I'm just about ready to toss the darned thing out to the trash and get him a new "condo" HELP

Then I am at a complete loss. Snifter glass huh? Put a little something in there besides water and he might not mind lol. Ok, need a laugh now and again. I am thinking here, this could get dangerous when I start doing that. When you tear his house down are you doing his filter also? I am wondering if you are not letting the tank cycle and if that might help. Is it possible this is something in your water? Not talking ammonia ph and stuff but something else that maybe should not be there. Ok, here is a thought. Depending on how big your tank is. Do not use your water but bottled or Ro water. Add marine salt, 1/4 tsp per gallon to replace the minerals that are missing in this water. This will mean completely rinsing everything again. This will tell us if it has to do with the fish or the water. Maybe. Anybody else?

Well, i did put a lil something in his snifter, his air hose [hee hee]. Laughs are needed right at this point in time, getting frusterated. When I tear his house apart, I scrub/boil EVERYTHING in either hot salt H2O or when I clean his filter, I just use salt H2O, seeing that I really can't submerge it.I have had our H2O tested before and the results came back that it's a bit chlorine-ish, but other than that, it's in normal tolerences. I filter all of our H2O before using, including Chipper's. [could that be it?] Other than that, I thought of using bottled, but 30+ gals. could get expensive, but, hey, I spent this much time and $$, what the hay, huh. I'll try it and let you know. Oh, about cycling, how would that explain the automatic recurring of this? I thought that when these things happen, it's normally due to poor H2O conditions, over feeding, ect.? Well, anyhoo, off to the store to get some H2O and re-remivate his condo. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. :)

That is what is confusing here. If it is overfeeding or dirty water cleaning should take care of it for at least awhile. Cycling is the only thing at this point I can think of, if you are cleaning the filter every time. But that is usually cloudy water. From what you said you feed it is not that, and the tank is clean. Flukes appear in the gills, lice are on the fish, worms, well the nasty ones are usually internal like tape worms and little squiggly white ones indicate to much food. This is a real generalization. In my 30 years of fish keeping I have seen this once in my tanks, and after a good cleaning it was gone. Ok, one more thought. Don't put the decorations or gravel back in. If it comes back you may have ruled them out as hiding it whatever it is. If it does it is either the fish or the filter or the water hiding it. I'll keep thinking and looking around on this. I am determined we figure this out, I guess no one else has any ideas either. You might try posting in Aquamaniacs and see if they have ideas. A lot more people there, but come back and let me know what you find out.

Well, I tossed everything out from Chipper's condo. Went out and purchased ALL new stone, plants, toys, ect. I sterilised everything really well and redecorated. So far, so good. Chipper's not too happy going from a condo to a snifter, but he'll just have to wait a couple more days. Shall I treat the water with anything before he moves back in, or shall I just let nature take its course? He's missing quite a few scales up by his dorsal fin [from "running" laps in the tank and diving into his rocks] I was just wondering if there would be anything that I should be aware of? He would be more suseptible to infections and stuff from this, right? Is there anything that I can give him or put in there for him? Please let me know.

I wonder should i just revert to feeding them once a day? (remember the betta) any suggestions on the time setting and when to feed/ okay , sorry so long-thanks!

I am glad your bettas fins are doing so much better. I have one that I keep in a little higher salt than the others and he does well in it. i am also glad it is not NTD with your fish and that things are looking better. Glow lights and neons are not the same but do look nice together. As for the timer. 8-10 hours is good, feeding once a day is fine. I feed three times a day myself because I am a homemaker and have the time. I would suggest putting a pinch in, when they finish that add another. This way you can be sure they are eating enough. Or, you can buy these little wafers for bottom feeding fish, they are good for twelve hours, put one in the morning and it will be gone before you get home. They come in larger and smaller sizes, go for the smaller, shows a catfish on the package but all my fish eat them. Then a feeding of othe rfood when you get home.

My question is should I make a water change or add buffers?I have heard some people say not to do water changes untill the cycling is finished and others say different. Also I plan to have a mini reef and add some power heads for circulation. My next question is should i do away with the under gravel filter? If so Why? Any help whould be greatly appreciated.

I have yet to keep a salt tank so this is coming form the studying on it I have been doing. Fish only marine tanks and undergravel filter, good. Reef tank, no UGF, The live rock and sand is supposed to ease the cycling process. Since your test are at 0 I am guessing it is working out well. I would add a buffer before your ph gets to low. When I set up my reef I am looking at the ecosystem filter. They sound really interesting and lessen the maintenance on your tank. They use a mud and caulerpa in the filter.

Hi! I hope for some help here. We just got a 10 gallon fish tank for my 8 yr old son. We set it up and 8 days later we bought the fish. My son chose a bala shark (med) a small silvertipped shark, and 2 pearl gourami's. The water clouded after a couple days which we were told was going to happen, and then it cleared up. In the meantime, the silvertipped shark started to act different, not as aggressive as he first appeared, and eventually in a couple days he died. the water has been cloudy, we have suctioned the bottom and did a 20% water change in 4 days, (we used poland springs, that is what they said to do at the fish shop) also, the water test they did for me showed high levels of ammonia, which is why they said to use poland springs. Anyhow, the water has not cleared up, in 2 days the filter is brown, and the bala shark was acting like the other shark did before he died. Also i might add that the gouramis look fine, and are acting fine, however, they don't look pearly in color anymore. They sorta look like they turned orangey. Does anyone have a solution, or suggestions, we just did a major water change and took everything out of the tank, gravel and the plastic plants. Would live plants be better? Thanks in advance! Classic, new tank and overstocked. But we'll see how we can help you here. Ten gallons is a small tank. You need fish that at adult size are going to stay small. A bala shark is too big for a ten. Pearl Gouramis are too small also. The cloudy water is a bacteria bloom caused from too many fish, your ammonia probably went through the roof causeing the odd behavior and death in the sharks. Gouramis are anabantoids, they actually breathe air, so the poor water quality affects them slower. Poland Springs? Not heard of that. Bottled water or reverse Osmosis water is void of any minerals, If you use these you need to add to the water. Unless you have poor tap water just use that. A dechlorinator the removes chlorine and chloromines. Make sure it removes both, communities are putting chloromines in the water and it does not evaporate like chlorine does.

I meant to say pearl gouramis are to large, not small for a ten. I am going to give a real general idea of what fish you could keep in a ten. Hopefully others will pitch with more ideas. Tetras, there are many types. A school of 5 glow lights, head and tail lights, cardinals, several others will do well. However some tetras get very large so be sure of the adult size. Same with barbs. Also, get these in groups of the same type for happier fish. Guppies, mollies if you add salt, platies. Cories for the bottom, again they like to be in groups so get at least three. I strongly suggest you do not go with more than ten fish total. Do not go with goldfish, they need a minimum of 20 gallons per fish to do well and live their full lives. Keep in mind, petstores are trying to sell fish. These have a very unstable and possibly expensive shelf life so they will tell new comers to the hobby just about anything to move fish. I have found this to be true in even some of the most reliable petstores. Depends a lot on the person helping you also. The one rule of thumb to never forget. Only buy fish that will fit in your tank as adults. the fish in stores are mostly juveniles, and if they don't get to grow and move properly they will suffer and die. There are exceptions but they are rare.

I went to the store last night and bought some of the drops to put in the tank and it seems a little better today. I put the drops in today and will continue to do so until the spots go away(according to the pet place that I called this morning) It's a 5 gallon tank, which the pet store said would be fine for three fish. I'm hoping it doesnt out grow the tank and I have to buy a bigger one. Anyways, I did a partial water change and the ph is back to normal as it has been staying for the most part.

i have five bettas-and have no interest in spawning....they are all males.....and i have had mine between nine months and one month... 1. Ephesias, five gallon, royal blue with i hint of red in fins, fiesty, loves to swim the tank when i set a bowl with one of the other bettas next to it-flares and swims the around the whole tank... 2. Ying-one gallon "tank" , steel bluewith red fins(light blue speckles on dorsal fin)-will flare at another betta or mirror. 3. Blinky-one gallon bowl-pearl -pinkish white, teal fins with red streaks....used to flare at fingers, seems less aggressive-but will still flare at mirror and other bettas 4. Emperor-one gallon bowl, pale red body and fins-top of head is marbled with a fleshy color, and the fins have a very faint teal color between each little "ridge". Very docile-no flairing ever. 5. Marduk- one gallon bowl...Black with fins that aresee-through tinted black with a little blue -, the dorsal fin is speckled with royal blue and teal spots...his pectoral fins are baby blue...one of the prettiest-unusual bettas i've seen(cost me 6.99)...just flared at my finger while i was looking at him to better describe him... After learning about breeding these guys, decided it was more than I wanted to do, so I have never spawned mine. Had them about a year. Purple, Lucky, was in a cup at Walmart and his fins looked more like threads and his water, all 1/4 inch of it was like mud. Not very aggressive. When kept in a split 5 gallon barely paid any attention to the other one. Red, now named Red Devil is very aggressive. He will chase and flare constantly when kept in mentioned divided tank, somehow got over the divider which was out of the water over an inch and almost killed lucky. I would call this guy very aggresssive. Half blue half a white, Sky, falls inbetween these two. Will flare at another fish or a mirror image, then I guess he figures he won and swims away. His tail is the most beautiful shade of bright sky blue.

Air conditioning does not matter if you have a heater in the tank. Any other symptoms? Weight loss? I am assuming you have looked for spots or white patches so I am assuming they are not the problem. Red streaking in the fins? Seemingly fast breathing? Have you tried lowering the temp to 78 or so? Have you added any decorations just before they started dying? Does your water have chloromine in it? Do you use a chlorine remover?

From all I have read and heard yes they do, the water goes through the sterilizer killing algae and diseases reducing these dramatically. However they are pricey. I think they are just another expensive toy people are going to be convinced they HAVE to have and it is going to make this hobby even more expensive. Frequent water changes and monitoring, proper stocking will do about the same thing.

Ok, I took the wood out right away! I have slowly donea water change of 50%, 30% first, then 6 hours later 20% more. I thought it would be better because I heard that water changes are stressful and I didn't want to do more damage than I already have. I have a Bio wheel Eclipse 3 - 3 gallon tank. No air pump - except the pump that comes wiht the Bio wheel - No air stone. The fish made it throught the night, he has nothing in there now but a aquarium safe silk plant that I took out when he was well and replaced with live plants. I have taken out the live plants, the wood. Only thing in there is the fish and the silk plant. Someone told me that maybe the Bio wheel pump devise could be sending out shocks to him - but he's been in there for a month with no problems, only after that stupid driftwood did he go under! What do you think. My Ph is 8., the Nitrites and Nitrates are all O. There is no ammonia. I am using Bottle Spring water with "AquaSafe" as a conditioner. I called the Tetra people and asked them if I should put it in bottled water, they said put 5 drops only for 1 gallon to add slime coating stuff and in case there is any harmful stuff in the bottled water. Could this be causing him harm? To be honest I think it was the wood because he was find until it was added. Oh and I put 1 tsp. per gallon of aquarium salt in the replacement water. Could there be too much salt in the water? I heard that some bottled water has sodium - that's salt right? Maybe I have too much salt? I don't know what to do - he made it through the night and eat one betta bite this morning - I don't know if he'll make it because he just either hangs there at the top looking like a zombie or falls to the bottom and just hangs there until I come and entice him to move. He was so active before. Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Put a two or so more plants in there. (live or fake). Do no more water changes for now. You might try getting an air pump. Sometimes fish get lazy because of lack of oxygen. Try to keep the temp at 76F. It is not your filter. I don't think it is the bottled water either. Keep off the water changes. Let the 50% one work. One tablespoon of salt is equal to three teaspoons.(I think). It is recommend to have 1 tablespoon for 5 gallons of water. So, you have too much salt. You can do another water change if you want. I would if I were you. If you do that, don't put any more salt in it. Follow the directions on the bottle for the slime coat stuff. If I think of anything else I will post it. AJB

I appreciate your confidence in me but others may have better ideas than me. I would do the bucket to bucket method i have described for others. Set up two containers, with salt and aged or dechlored water. Put bobo in one container, next day transfer just bobo, no water to the other one. Clean out the first one real well and refill. Next day do the same. What this does is give them a fresh start each day. By leaving the one set up 24 hours before putting the fish in is lets the water age.

Could be a number of things. Does Aqua Safe have Aloe Vera in it. I have heard of people having a problem with Aloe causing water problems. When you replace the filter you could be removing enough biobugs that your tank does a sort of mini cycle even though you do not replace the bio wheel. Don't rinse it wither unless it is very dirty then rinse it in dechlorinated water. Try cutting out a little piece of the old filter media and putting that in with the new filter pad, transfering more of the biobugs. Also, even though you still have the same fish, how much have they grown, especially the algae eater? Have the guppies had babies? And if the tank is stocked to or over its limit could have an effect.

I do each of my tanks differently. my 55 has 7 goldfish from 6 inches - 2 inches long not counting fins. Way to many so I actually do a 25-50% water change every day. All my other tanks get done at least every 3 days, at least 20%, if feeling energetic or the water looks a little off I do more. I recommend doing it once a week. Won't hurt the fish and that is at least once a week where you are paying closer than normal attention to what is going on in the tank (hopefully). If the water color changes a little or a bit of an odor that is not normally there or perhaps there is more debris than normal you will catch it quicker.

When I do a water change, am I going all the way down to the bottom and not only take the water but any debris I can get, or just the surface water . And also as far as feeding these little fry, I'm giving them crushed flakes and bloodworms, does that sound about right? If you don't mind one more question, could I put a bandit cory in with the fry to bottom feed without it eating them or is this not a good idea. I have the cory in with the 2 female swordtails.

Some people do, just keep i mind if teh cory gets one of the fry in its mouth it will eat it, but they won't actively go for one in my experience.

I'm with Katie...3 pellets twice a day. Bio Gold, Baby Cichlid Pellets (both by Hakari). I vary diet though. Sometimes 2 Omega One flakes AM (high protein flake). Twice a week a couple of freeze dried bloodworms...not often because they can be constipating. A frozen green pea with skin removed and thawed once a week too.

Subject: Any experiences with adding driftwood to Betta tank?
Posted by devadust@yahoo.com) Michelle on September 07, 101 at 07:41:52:
I wanted to know if any one has used driftwood in their Betta's tank. How long does it take to affect the ph? It is bad or good for Bettas to have wood in their tank? Has anyone heard or tried adding oaks leaves to the bottom of the Betta's tank? Is driftwood (properly treated of course) safe for Bettas? How long do the affects of driftwood last? Your input will be greatly appreciated! (-;

Depends on the kind of wood first, size of wood and tank second. As for it affecting ph, if your betta is in a small bowl you should be changing the water frequently and the ph won't be affected. I tried the oak leaves on the bottome of a tetra tank one time. Supposed to make it look more natural, made a mess because they decompose like any other plant. Even those of us with experience do dumb things once in awhile, this was one of mine.

I learned my lesson the hard way! The driftwood was in the tank, everything seemed fine at first - this morning Jet was kind of lazy looking, this afternoon when I got home - he is breathing heavy at the top of the tank and won't move, he's really sick and I think it's the wood because he was fine before it came in the tank. I took the wood out immediately and did a 30% water change and added a teasp. of salt - I don't know if he'll make it, he still looks really bad. I didn't want to do a complete water change out of fear of really stressing him out besides his other stress from the bad driftwood! Please everyone pray for poor Bobo and if there is anything more I should do, please let me know. Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear this Michelle. I think you're right about the wood. I've always been scared of the stuff. Don't be hard on yourself. We never know if we're doing the right thing. I would do a complete water change though. You and Bobo are in my prayers.

Subject: white slimy stuff on wood in tank
Posted by GinaFrick@aol.com) Gina on September 07, 101 at 06:58:48:
I bought a piece of wood from the fish store to soften the water in my tank. The first piece I put in I soaked in fish water ovrnight before adding. I was having a ph problem so the girl at the store said to maybe add another piece of wood. I asked about soaking and she said it wasn't necesary. Now 2 days after adding the wood I have white cloudy slime on part of the wood. Will it hurt my fish? Will it go away on its own? New tank owner here so any advice would be apperciated! Gina

I bought some wood too, in hopes of getting the Ph to a more suitable level. The wood I got was from Mardel Labs. When I talked to their "Fish expert" on the phone yesterday he told me to first soak the wood over night, then boil it in regular tap water for a couple of hours, then scrub the wood with a fish only brush, then soak over night again in treated tap water and that after all that it "should" be safe enough for the fish's tank. I did all that and have the wood on now - so far so good. Your piece of wood may be ok, if you want to be sure, you could always take it out and boil, then soak overnight again. Or someone told me to put 1 drop of Aquarisol per gallon to kill anything that might have bene on the wood - do not over medicate though. I hope this helps some (-:

I am wondering why you are wanting to lower your ph. Most fish will adapt to ph that is a little high. Unless you have a sensitive fish or are trying to breed a fish that is sensitive in it's breeding requirements it is better to leave it alone. My ph is 8- 8.5 and I leave it alone.

I just started posting here yesterday and would like to thank all of you for your help : ) I kinda stressed last night over my betta buddy. As a dog owner I should have known to do more research before getting any type of new family member. So I thank you for the info. The employees have named him Ernie...lol So I guess Ernie it is : ) Ernie is now in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl and the Peace Lily is still very beautiful in the water vase : ) I got my 55 gallon tank up and running last night (WooHoo!) and will probably start adding fish, a few at a time, on Saturday. It looks HUGH compared to my 20 gallon. Loving it even without the fish : ) I have been trying to jot down some fish groupings for the tank. I know that I want this to be a community tank and would appreciate any recommendations on groupings. Fin nippers not allowed. I would like one or two schooling species. With at least one focal point fish and some nice points of interest fish. (Does that make sense?...lol) I would love to hear any recommendations you might have. Really looking forward to your thoughts : )

I suggest waiting til next week to get the fish. This way you can consider what all is suggested here, look it up and see if it is what you really want. You could do a mixed tetra tank, 7 (I am partial to odd numbers in my tanks) Tiger Barbs (2 -21/4inches), they are fin nippers in small groups but in a larger group like this they chase each other. 7 bleeding heart tetras (2 1/2 inches), I really think they are pretty 7 diamond tetras (2 inches or so I think) . 1 redtail black shark (5 inches) would encourage schooling. You could go with some loaches for the bottom or my preference would be a nice school of cories. Seen in a school of 5-7 they are fun to watch. (2 inches or less) For the top some silver hatchet fish, maybe 5. If you omitted one of the tetras group you could go with a pair of Angels. Or if you give me some time I could come up with more. If you went with small cichlids you could do a community of them also.

I have had Tiger Barbs before and really liked them, but it was a smaller tank and they were a bit aggressive. Very hardy fish too. I would love to try some of them again in this larger tank. Maybe they would be a happer lot...lol. I had a group of three. I have also had hatchet fish and really liked them too. I had almost forgotten about trying to layer my tank and now I remember that the hatchets liked living in the upper part of the tank. (Excellent thought). If I go with loaches over the cories (haven't decided) I am reading that the Kuhli loaches are probably the best choice. Do you agree with that? How many? *nina picking your brain...lol* Karen go right ahead and give me as many groupings as you have energy for...lol. I plan to do some reading before starting to introduce fish to the tank, so I got time baby : ) Coarse ya know there'll be pictures when all is said and done...lol

Tell me about it. I bought three new fish today. Problem is I do not know much about them. I saw them in the store a few days ago, tried finding out what they are, asked the store if they knew but they didn't. Some kind of goby and for now they are in a 15 long. This should be interesting.
