i'm gonna breed bettas, yes i know how and have all
the supplys needed, such as a heater, lots of jars [120], 10 gallon tank and/or a 5 gallon tank. i know almost everything there is needed to know. now i wanna breed. i want either a royalblue offspring or a extended red offspring. i don't have a extended red or royalblue pair because they are very hard to find.
so i wanna know if there is any other color that can
be breed to get either the blue, or red.
please help,

So, My fish died when they were in my bowl within a day. Duh, because their was no air pump. But, one fish had to stay with my Grandma while my family went camping. Her tap water has less iron than ours also-> important clue. Anyway, my Grandma changed the water ONCE with HER water. It ended up that that fish lived for days. Then days into weeks and weeks into months. She ended up living for 5 months, IN A BOWL! NO AIR PUMP! HAND-CLEANED! AND IT LIVED FOR 5 MONTHS! Was it the water? Or just luck? The iron percentage too maybe?

EB;
Considering that with few exceptions the minimum lifespan for small tropical fish is 7 years, 5 months is nothing. Occacionally things happens even if by all reasons it shouldn't. Your Grandmother probably fed very little and made complete water changes often. I myself have witness incredible things regarding fishkeeping. But those are exceptions you might call miracles, luck, one in a lifetime occurance, whatever. I told you before bowls are not suited for any fish. A betta can be happy in a 2 gallon with filtration a heater and proper maintenance. HTH

The reason why everyone likes them at first is because they are lied to at the petstores saying that the fish are easy to take care of.
And they are, if given the proper environment, which of course they mostly never have, they usually die within a year or so.
You know, its all personal taste too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Damn! I missed mthis question yesterday! Man ! Have you really seen the beautiful array of colors, even a crappy petstore has a great selection sometimes, especially if they just arrive, they sell out quick. I have three....One is a very pretty roal blue..with red tips, and he is very hardy and graceful...Once you take them out of a cup and put them in a proper habitat...they really come alive. This one is in a five gallon..With a snail and four neons. Man i just love to watch him swim....and then i have one that is also blue but with red fins and on the dorsal there is baby blue blended in and it fades in to speckles...and he is in a one gallon tank. and not satisfied with the colors i had I bought another. It's body is a white-peach sorta color, and the fins are the prettiest teal with red tips....and he is in a bowl for the time being....I have a few die...one a cat got. and also i put one in my five before it was in good condition....But to be frank, I believe they are about as hardy as any fish. Hardier! The one i have in my one gallon jumped out of the temporary container he was in while i prepared his first bowl he was in, and landed on the counter, he damaged a gill but to this day he is just as active and pretty as he can be. They are not too aggressive with tank mates other than Bettas, although they do like to show whos boss, or at least mine in the five gave those neons hell for about a week. Did I mention all those beautiful colors? And the gracefullness is artful. You should go to a betta website, many of them have photo galleries, there are an amazing range, the kind you can't find in petstores...and people buy them for like eight bucks a pair...Not me for 2.oo where I shop there is purple, teal, red, blue , green, have seen white with black fins, yellow, which is rare....... What a pretty addition to a compmmunity tank!!!!

Actually if they don't have enough space, they will kill each other as well. The thing is, betta spendens is extremely degenarted and some male specimens can't even move right, and that's why they don't kill each other-because they can't.

O.K. you can get a sponge filter they are very good and can be bought for about $3 at That Fish Place, maybe call around and see if you can find them locally. But you can only put a betta in there, and must clean the water at least 2 times per week. How big is the bowl? If its at least 2 1/2" you can get a dwarf aquatic frog. HTH

Sounds to me like you are determined to put something into that bowl....Although Vixen won't agree. and I agree with her it's not the best idea...but i did it...I just love Bettas....A Betta can live in a Goldfish bowl well-IF YOU ARE WILLING TO CHANGE THE WATER EVERY TWO DAYS OR EVERY DAY!!!!! you have to condition the tap water-they sell this at the local fish store, or PETco-also you can buy a real pretty betta at the Petco-you just have to be real careful about your selection. Buy one that is moving about, and look at the fins really close! Are they in good condition, no tears, or discolortations, no little white spots, is he in a dirty cup or have they taken care of him-again is he sluggish when you pick the cup up or is he active/ YOu must at least feed him "Betta-Bites" not flake food, and he will need a small plant in the bowl to rest on....See doesn't sound to difficult or expensive does it-the don't need a pump or filter-although i do have two others in tanks and they to like it very much...JUST change the water as often as every two days!!!

There's a reason why VERY MINI filters are rarely seen. They are just not efficient enough and are just too much trouble.
If the filter you are talking about is a mini undergravel filter, don't buy it! I've tried it out, and it was a total waste of money. Doesn't work at all.
Use your bowl as decoration or a little flower pot or something, just not fish!!!

Never ever put table salt into your aquarium. It's not the right type you need to use AQUARIUM SALT. But first off ... do your fish really need salty water? what kind of fish do you have in your 15g? How many? Whats your water perameters? ie. pH? Ammonia? Nitrate? is the water hard or soft?

Tetras and algae eaters don't benefit from salt much, so basically it'd be a waste if you added salt to your tank.

The swordtails could use some salt in the water, but since you have this combination with neons and algae eaters(livebearers and tetras don't mix) you cannot add salt. Next time you buy fish, don't mix guppies, mollies, swordtails or any other livebearer with tetras, because they have different water needs.

Also Salt cures about 86% of sickness in fishes according to Dr. Johnson of Koivet, no he does not say in koi's IN FISH. You might want to e-mail him and discuss it with him, do a search for Koivet. Of course some fishes such as scaless fishes as well as plants cannot take the amt. necessary for the cures. I have 8 tanks and for the past 12 years have kept 1 tablespoon per 5 gal of salt in each of them, the result whether it be because of the salt or not is that I have not have any illness or death. I have livebearers, angels, convicts, barbs, corries, goldfish, rams, jewel cichilds, blackskirts tetras, buenos aires tetras am probably forgeting some. Anyway, the one and only thing that will ensure fish health is to provide a big enough tank and maintain their environment/water in prestine conditions. Nothing else is require fish will be healthy, strong and will display their true color simply by doing regular water
changes (vacumming). I've read some breaders chang as much as 75% daily. HTH

I realize that everyone automatically thinks that because it is white and fuzzy that it has to be fungus... it just isn't the case.
Salt dips, which are salt solutions at high concentrations are effective for treating many diseases. The amount of salt that fishkeepers traditionally put in their tank like one teaspoon or if it were even one tablespoon per gallon, won't acheive a concentration that is high enough to cure disease. BTW, KoiVet and I read the same medical fish text books. :)
I would bet that your success as a fishkeeeper has nothing to do with salt, but rather with yourself and the care that you expend to perform regular water changes, etc., to ensure that your tanks' water quality is top-notch. So, give yourself the credit, not the salt. :)

on otherwise normal skin/scales is inevitably Flexibacter, a bacterial infection. If white fuzzies occur on traumatized skin, like an open wound, then that is true fungus.
So why does something like Fungus Eliminator work on white fuzzies if it's not a fungus Dr. Barb? It works because it contains antibiotics. So why do they call it Fungus Eliminator? They do so because Aquarium Pharmaceutical companies know that fishkeepers will only believe that if something is white and fuzzy, then it must be fungus. I'm trying to teach you guys to be smarter than what they give you credit for, which is that fishkeepers are morons.:(
BTW, salt won't help this condition and even if you feel compelled to add salt, the Fungus Eliminator already contains salt (sodium chloride).

Slick;
Tetra makes a medicated food for bacteria, I would feed all the fishes in the tank. Also 'Fungus Eliminator by Jungles' is good and will not hurt any fish, 1 teaspoon for each gal. Depending on what other fish you have you can use salt at 3 teaspoon per gal. Salt is my favorite treatment, its cheap and always available, of course some fishes cannot take salt especially that much. HTH

Fungus Eliminator dosage is 1 teaspoon for each 5 gallon. Also salt dosage of 3 teaspoon per gallon must be administer gradually. One teaspoon per gallon per day for three days.

Good thing you caught it early. All you need to do is make sure your water is pristine (no ammonia or nitrites/nitrates) and then add Coppersafe.
For faster and more effective results, put him in a hospital tank and treat him there, he'll be fine within a week.

Sounds like "Cotton Wool Disease", which is caused by a bacteria, Flexibacter, actually now called Flavobacterium columnare. It is often unfortunately rapidly fatal. The treatment should include:
*Ensuring that your water parameters are in line.
*Maracyn in the water in a hospital tank.
*Maracyn-Two in the water to cover the bacteria, Aeromonas that often co-exists and leads to the fatal septicemia (infection throughout the body).
*Feed an antibiotic food containing oxytetracycline.
*Keep the temp in the hospital tank at 75-76*F and not any higher.
*Provide plenty of aeration.

If it is then you my son have ick ... don't despair it's treatable .. but hurry down to your local fish store and get some "ick medicine". Buy a convalecant home (little plastic hospital tank) and put the affected fish (or should I say infected fish) in there with the medicine. He'll be ready to play ball with his kids in no time.
