Subject: HELP!! Posted by emerald25adelphia.net) Sherry on June 13, 101 at 22:09:38: I just recently became interested in fish. In my aquarium...I have 2 miniature albino frogs, a snail..and a guarami. I have tried other types of fish with the guarami. I have tried Tiger, Tetra and Betas...The guarami has killed every fish I have tried to put in there. It doesnt bother the frogs or the snail. Any suggestions on what I could do? I dont want to get rid of the guarami...yet i would like some variety in my tank. All responses will be greatly appreciated ) 10095

Possible, gouramis are mean, mostly with their own kind, but those cute little albinos frogs will soon be over 6" and will eat anything that fits in their mouth. I saw one eat a comet gf that was 4". Depending on your tank size, I kept gouramis with a pair of angel fish (remember angels need 10 gal per fish). The only problem was when the angel started to spawn it chased the gourami around but no casualties. HTH 10081

Subject: When to change carbon filter Posted by Gary on June 13, 101 at 18:50:17: I have a 20 gal tank which is closing in on 1 month in operation. The tank has not cycled yet - I'm still in the ammonia phase due to light loading (only 2 guppies and 2 danios). I am told that it is recommended to change the carbon filter once per month. Should I change it even though the cycling process is still in progress? It seems that I need all the bacteria I have, and there probably isn't much for the carbon filter to remove due to the light fish load. If it makes any difference, I'm using an Aquaclear Mini filter. For info, the light load of fish was due to early pH problems killing off some, and the LFS guy recommended not adding any more until after the cycling is complete. Thanks for any suggestions. 10088

Next time you do a water change rinse the filter in the bucket with the old tank water. I've never used an Aquaclear, but I think you should be able to empty the carbon and change it if you want to. Although it's not really nessisary. I would take the carbon out and add more filter floss. 10079

Subject: Tin Foil Barb, injured, need advice ASAP Posted by tmt118flash.net) TalonStorm on June 13, 101 at 14:58:33: Hi everyone. I am new here, so please do not blast me if I say something wrong. I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with 4 tinfoil barbs (about 4-5"), 3 sunset mollies, two little dwarf catfish (this isn't there real name, but I am drawing a blank), and a plecostamus(sp?). Anyway, I was away from 6 days and my roommate was caring for the fish. He does this most of the time anyway. He fed them at about 8:30 AM yesterday and they were fine, I got home at about 5:45 PM and one of the large tinfoil barbs had somehow rammed himself into a plastic rock formation on the bottom of the tank. He was struggling wildly to get out. I reached into the tank and picked up the rock and he backed out of it. Unfortunately, he removed sections of scales on his back and sides. The part on his back is the worst. It is just in front of his top fin and is about 1/8" deep. I added stress coat to help him heal, but I am not sure what else to do for him. The other tinfoils are bothering him a little, but not too much. He is still eating fine and when anyone picks on him he still picks back, but I am worried about him. Is there anything else I can do to help increase his chances of surviving? I really don't want him to die. Many people do not like the tinfoil barbs, but our four are fairly non-agressive (they live in peace with little mollies) and they are very active and school together. Thanks, Tina PS- I don't get on the web too often, so email would be the best way to answer me. 10076

As a medication its 3 teaspoon for each gal, this should be added one teaspoon per day, and the temperature should be raise slowly to 82F. Salt does not evaporate so only add the amt taken out with water changes (do not add salt simply when toping for evaporation). Any salt that is non iodize is fine, I use aguarium salt, some say sea salt is better. Remember never use salt for scaleless fish such as frogs, plecos etc. HTH 10096

Example: for a 10 gal - 10 teaspoon first day, 10 second day, and 10 the third day total at the 3rd day will be 30 teaspoons of salt in the 10 gal tank. Remove plants and scaleless fishes because THEY WILL DIE with that much salt. A.C.E. also eliminates chlorine and chloramines ((not sure if AmQuel does)) what solution did you add to try to clear the water? and did you remove activated carbon in your filter when you did it? if not, it's possible that whatever you were using was immediately sucked out of the tank. take a peek at (http://www.aquamaniacs.net/cyclingsafely.html>http://www.aquamaniacs.net/cyclingsafely.html - it will give you some good info on the cycling process. if you need a water test kit, i'd reccomend getting Aquarium Pharmaceutical's Master Test Kit - measures ammonia, nitrIte, PH, high end PH, KH and GH.. it costs between $15 and $20, but it's well worth the cash. if you purchase it, you'll need to buy a seperate nitrAte tester as it's not included in the kit 10070

The really cool thing about AmQuel is that it converts toxic ammonia to a non-toxic form, which still allows the natural cycling process to continue. Other ammonia blocking products do just that... block the ammonia and impede your cycling endeavors. That cloudiness during cycling is called a bacterial bloom and will clear with time. This is really a very tough call! Your oranda's symptom is very new but I would be quite concerned about this being the beginning of what is called "Mouth Fungus", which is not caused by a fungus at all, but rather by a bacterium called Flexibacter. It is treated by feeding Tetra's Antibacterial food (contains oxy-tetracycline) and by treating with plain Maracyn (not Maracyn-Two) in the water. The problem with mouth fungus is that I've seen it be fatal within 4-5 days and it always starts as something which seems really small and insignificant. Could it be something else like a little bit of trauma to his mouth from biting on something? Absolutely! And this would most likely just get better on it's own. If however it's the other, then this is a very serious matter and requires immediate treatment. I would err on the side of treatment because to wait with a Flexibacter infection even a couple of days can mean no hope. Like I said, this is a real tough one. BTW, what is the temp in the tank? Tank size? Tankmates? What are your water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate measurements)? Barb (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm1) Help! 10048

Do read (http://www.aquamaniacs.net/cyclingsafely.html) Cycling Safely. You are probably either having an ammonia or nitrite spike and this will make your fish act sickly. We need to know your water parameters (ammonia and nitrite levels) in order to give you the best advice. Take a water sample to your local fish store, so that they can measure these for you. Treat ammonia with AmQuel at the rate of one teaspoon per 10 gallons water (pick some up at the fish store). Treat a nitrite elevation with a series of partial (10%) water changes until fishy stress has been eased. Follow Rose's recommendations for treating the sick fish for septicemia. The 20% water change that she advises should ease the water chemistry problems going on now. Is there just the one fish with red streaking? What you have is a disease called Septicemia. This is a bacterial disease that gets into the blood. The red streaks on the tail tell me this. What you will need to do is get some Maracyn 2 and treat the whole tank. Take the carbon out of the filter and do a 25% water change. The reason you take the carbon out of the filter is because the carbon can take the medicine out of the water so the fish don't get it. The other problem I see is too many fish for a cycling tank to handle. Once again I will refure you to www.aquamaniacs.net to read the article in the E-Zine on "cycling safely". This will explain what the cycling process is and how it works. You really should read it, as it will help you help your fish. All the fish you have can get real big. Eventually you will need to get a 125gallon tank just to house the Bala Sharks. The Balas get to 12 inches full grown. A 30g tank won't hold them when they get bigger. I have 3 in a 55 and they have just about out grown that( I also have other fish with them). Please if you have any more questions ask. I can either be found here or on the aquamaniacs board. Subject: growth on walls of tank Posted by mmharlanearthlink.net) Michelle on June 11, 101 at 23:02:42: i have an acrylic five gallon tank, which i've had for almost two years. i've had the same black mollies now for just short of a year (since they were fry), and they continue to do fine. i moved from the central part of the state to the northern part about nine months ago and my tank has taken on a new life, it seems. i've never tested my water ph before and never had any obvious problems. so when i moved here my tank developed algae, i assume, all over the walls and any equipment in the water. i change my water normally and when i remove it, the water is crystal clear. the green stuff is slimy and it takes a slight scrubbing to remove it from my tank. the fish don't appear to be affected by it -- they act the same as they did before i moved (and none have died). i asked someone at Petsmart about it and they suggest i change my water (again) and see what happened -- the green stuff regrows after a couple weeks (two max). his suggestion after that was to get an algae eater -- which i eventually ended up doing. he's making no progress or difference (i think i'd need an army of them to eat it all, anyway). so, my longwinded question(s) is... is it obviously a difference in the water from my old town and the new? does it sound familiar to anyone, the algae on the walls, but not in the water when removed? will buying a water test kit solve the problem in a second, or is there some other action i need to take? should i buy those algae tablets? -- assuming that's what it is... any info is greatly appreciated! thanks, michelle. 10055

Tetra's Spirulina flakes are a veggie supplement that my mollies seem to love. yep, algae on tank walls but not in water when removed is pretty much the norm. how much lighting does your tank get - sunlight, tanklight and indoor light? cutting back on the amount of light your tank gets daily may also reduce algae growth. buying a test kit won't solve your algae problem in a second, but it's really something you should have. is PH the only test you haven't done, or do you not test the tank water at all? if you don't test it at all, you really need to start. i just got a TK after running a tank for 2 months and i **really** wish i'd done it sooner. checking the water parameters is important as it helps you maintain a healthy water quality and will clue you in to problems you might have. Aquarium Pharmaceutical's Master Test Kit is really good and costs around $20. you'll need to buy a seperate test for nitrate though, as it's not included in the box :( Hope this helped :) 10029

Bettas do good with a teaspoon of salt in their water and water changes at least once a week. Fungus Eliminator by Jungles is a very good medicine. Next time you get another fish keep him/her in a separate tank for 3 weeks to make sure he/she is not ill, that way it will not infect your main tank. Posted by svidunasprovidentmutual.com) Sandi on June 11, 101 at 11:28:55: My new beta George II (in loving memory of his predecesor George I), is not like George I. George I would swim around all the time and never just lay at the bottom. But George II always lays around on the bottom. I have a much bigger set up for George II, so I would think he would swim even more. He looks fine, no suspect marks or spots. I used spring water to fill his bowl. He has a peace lilly in his bowl and it doesn't look so healthy either. I have a few questions. 1. Why does George II bite for food just to spit it back out a few seconds later? 2. Do peace lillies need direct sunlight to strive? 3. How much of the root of the plant should be below the cup that holds it? 4. Is there something wrong with George II, if he just lays around on the bottom? When I get his attention, he seems to get excited and swims around in front of me. 5. How do I clean the rocks and his water the best way as to not stress him out? Should I net him out and put him in another bowl and then clean all the rocks and the bowl? 6. What is the slimy like substance that is around the plants roots? When the bowl moves, you can see the slimy stuff move around on the roots? I know I am asking for a lot of information, but I want my pet to be healthy. I love my little Beta!!!!! Thanks for the information! 10020

These two do NOT ever go together. You are seeing why. The Cichlid will stress your goldie to the point of death if you do not seperate them or get rid of one. Cichlids also need heated water unlike a goldie. The smallest tank you can get away with for a Cichlid is a 55g tank. They are very territorial and can be down right mean. The red streaks you are seeing is called Septicemia. This is a nasty bacterial infection that can lead to death if not acted upon quickly. Maracyn 2 will do just fine for this. I have had Septicemia in a couple of fish and have used Maracyn 2 with success. As far as Ick does it look like grains of salt. If so then you do in fact have Ick. Rid Ick+ will help with that. If you are seeing cottony patches then you have Flexibactor. Flex is a nasty disease. It too can kill. Once again Maracyn 2 will be your best bet for this. One caution I will give you in regards to the Rid Ick+ you can NOT use it with any other medications. If you need more help holler or go to www.aquamaniacs.net and find the "help/Emergency" forum and post there. Rose 10025

Subject: zebeth and Barb I am so sorry but I really need your help again, Please! It did say to copy the word below and paste it to my browser, but I feel so dumb I am newer to the computer then fish, I don't know where or what my browser is? I tried typing it into search and into keyword and on the blank white line that you put web addresses but none worked. I was the one with a new betta and zebra pleco and the zebra came with ich. Before I got your message Barb about the rid-ick I started treatment with the formlite III. It has malachite green in it and also formaldehyde. I was very worried about the malachite green with the pleco but the guy at the pet store swore by it, if I only use 2/3 of the recommended dose. He swore it was safe that he had treated all of his catfish and sharks with it safely. I have a 7 gallon of course I was not planning on keeping the zebra in this tank he will be moved to a much larger tank when he is well but the betta will be staying in the tank. Anyhow it says to use one drop per gallon every other day for a total of 3 doses and it say repeat one more full treatment if needed, so I used 4 drops instead of the 7. I started treatment on Friday and skipped Saterday and used one today. The zebra's white spots look a lot better but still a lot there. I do not feed my fish after getting them for the first 24 hours but since then the Zebra is not eating:( I have tried blood worms and hikari sinking carnivore pellets. I know that he did not eat the pellets because I had to take them out the next day and the blood worms I can't tell because the betta was eating them. The good news is the betta is eating really well. The zebra does not seem to like his cave and just hides behind the heater for over 2 days. I also turned up the heat to 85 degrees. Do you need to use an antibiotic for secondary infections? I am so afraid this little zebra is going to starve or the disease will kill him or the meds, I would do just about anything to save him and of course I don't want anything to happen to the betta either. It feels so bad when you fishy is sick:( Thank you so very much for your help before and any help that you might be able to give now!! 10009

Barb knows a lot more about fish than i do, so i'd wait for her response b/c she can advise you better than i can. i'm not familiar with formlite III and don't know how strong it is compared to other ich meds, but the pet shop guy made a good call when he suggested 2/3 of the normal dose. keep an eye on the pleco - if he seems worse after you treat, you might want to knock the dosage down to 1/2. and make sure to treat the tank for three days after the ich disappears from the pleco to ensure you kill the ich that's busy multiplying in the gravel. and do partial water changes before each treatment. i'd avoid the antibiotics for the time being unless you're positive he has a secondary infection... but Barb can advise you on that better than i can. as for the pleco not eating, give him a little while and i bet he'll come around. how long has he gone without food now? most of my fish hide and refuse to eat when they've got ich. i'm glad to hear the betta's healthy and eating well. yep, it does feel bad when your fish are sick, but it feels so good when they're healthy. you're taking the right steps to get the little guy back in shape. good luck 10035

Ich can't be killed by meds when the Ich is on the fish, only after it has fallen off (and this is the time when one falsely believes that things are just a-okay because there aren't any white spots any more). If you've removed the pleco to another tank, you still have to treat the original tank for another three days to kill the Ich that are there, that you can't see. I would probably hold on the antibiotics for now. Sometimes it is necessary to treat for a secondary bacterial infection, but let's hold off for now. Do not raise the temp in the tank. If you do not have a strong foothold on the Ich infection, accelerating its' lifecycle by cranking up the heat can lead to an overwhelming infection and death. Please read the numerous threads recently in the (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm1) Help forum on treating Ich in loaches... the info that you are looking for is there. Tetracyline is really good and there's another one made by the same company, but i can't think of the name off of the top of my head. i'd ask the guy at the pet shop about dosage b/c plecos are sensitive to meds and i don't know how well the zebra would handle a full dose. if he's not in and there's no one there to advise you, i'd try 1/4 or 1/2 a dose and work your way up slowly if the pleco handles it alright. the betta's still sharing the tank with the pleco, right? if not, keep a close eye on him b/c while you don't see any ich *on* him, it might be in the gills. 10036

I will do just as you say except I do not want to move the pleco to his new tank until I am sure he is well. I do not want to get my other healthy fish sick. So he will have to stay in this tank for a little while. I got the pleco last Thursday so it has been 6 days since he has eaten, is he going to starve? I do not think he is eating anything:( The breeder told me to buy some live black worms for him, I will normally not buy these because I am afraid of bringing in parasites, but since I have all that parasite medicine in there now, I figured I would try some just for tonight. I know they go into the gravel in a hurry so I hope he will at least try to get some. I have the heat at 85 degrees. I normally keep my tanks at 80 degrees. How far do you think I should turn down? Should I turn all the way back down? If turning up the heat makes the ich hatch and that is the only time you can kill them, then why is it bad to turn it up? Won't the medicine kill them as soon as they hatch or will they have time to do more damage? Today I finished the last dose of the three, should I do a water change and repeat the full treatment in a few days? I have no other tank to move these fish too all my other tanks have fish in them. I cannot thank you the both enough for your help it has meant so much to me!

Yes siree!! Some of those betta gals CAN flare! They can on occasion build bubblenests too. However, don't be fooled by short-finned males masquerading as females. Redness on a tail... if it looks red splotchy/bloody or inflammed, that can be from tail rot or even septicemia (whole body bacterial infection)... or the redness could be a part of the normal coloration of the tail that you never noticed before? What does it look like exactly The key to figuring out if it's an "abnormality" or not is whether it changes over the next couple of days or not... if it spreads, then you have an infection on your hands. Watch it closely for any signs of change. Also, sick bettas behave sickly... act sluggish and stop eating. Barb (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm3) Bettas 9985

A good place will give you credit, and advice on what fish you should get NEXT TIME. Not that same day. Now, after you have returned the fish, buy an aquarium book for beginners. They gradually got lethargic and have stopped eating. They appear to be gasping sometimes and some gasp at the top of the water. Gills look pink with nothing blocking them. There does appear to be some blood in the fins that wasn't there orignally. I hav a few plants in the water that appear to be doing well. I've check the common diseases listings and nothing seems to fit...... I've tried the salt water sick tank for a few of fish but no immediate results evident. Sorry to hear about your problems... it can get discouraging, huh? Some clarification is needed... *What is the ammonia level? *By nitrites being good, do you mean that the nitrites=zero? *By O2 being good, what does this mean? *List the fish and their size that you have in the 300-gal pond currently please. *Does your water supply contain chloramines, which are toxic to fish? What water conditioners are you using (perhaps you are using one, which takes care of chloramines)? When fish are gasping at the surface this can be due to... *A poisoning of some sort... as with ammonia (part of the natural cycling process) or chloramine toxicity, to name a few. Your local municipal water supplier can tell you if your tap water contains chloramines or not. AmQuel is a water conditioner which neutralizes toxic chloramines. and toxic ammonia without interfering with the natural cycling process. As you are only a couple of weeks into the "cycling" process, I suspect that what you are seeing is ammonia toxicity. So, an ammonia measurement and a count on the number of inches of fish that you have in the pond, while help to prove this or not. Fish with ammonia poisoning will have reddened gills, but I'm not so sure about the bloody fins as being a part of this... very well could be. Please read about (http:www.aquamaniacs.net/cyclingsafely.html) Cycling Safely to get a handle on this process. *Inadequate aeration. Check to be sure that all equipment is working normally and your nice waterfall should provide enough aeration. *The dying process from any cause, such as infections. If all fish are basically gasping at the same time it speaks for a problem that is different from this and confirms "poisoning" as the culprit. Bloody fins can be a result of septicemia (overwhelming whole body bacterial infection), but I'll reiterate that if all fish are having problems, then we are dealing with a poisoning or inadequate aeration. *Salt won't help your fish here, so forget the salt treatments. With a little more info, we'll get this pond back on track. You can also get more info on ponds from Nick at the Goldie/Pond link under my name. Thank you very much for the info and help. I can see I have a lot to learn. I've never had problems raising fish as we have one in the house in a bowl with no problems? I don't know what the amonia level is. There is some redening on the fish body behind the gills so I think I best find out what the ammonia is at! Can I buy a test kit for amonia and cholamines? The pet store did most of the tests for me so I'm not sure what some of the actual values are. Nitrites was a color test. O2 I had tested at work at 8.9% There are 10 fish in the large body of 200 gallons. There are 3 fish at 5" and 7 fish at 2-3". There are no fish in the other 2 "step" ponds. I had a lot of pollen from the trees for a while so I changed out the sponge filter for the "batten" style. The water is clear except for some pollen on top that is clearing off. I'm using the "Laguna" water treatment products. So far I've only used the "pond prep" that is supposed to eliminate chlorine and chloramines. I tried adding some "Stress Coat", but it only addresses the chlorines too. I'm going to get something to address the amonia. Any suggestions on how soon I should see improvemnt once it's added or is likely to be "permamnet" damage? Thanks again and I'll check the links you suggested! Jim 9999

I've never had anyone give me this info. Are you in the sciences? :) Your local fish store can test your water, just take them a sample and they can solve the ammonia question. The pond is not overstocked and you've addressed the chloramines, so these are not the problem. Are the fish all gasping at once or do they do that one by one and then die? If they are basically all doing it at once, then I still am thinking of some poisoning... is an insecticide or weed killer that a neighbor is spraying going into the pond? Any kids in the neighborhood who might be pouring something in the pond? If your fish are dropping off one by one with bloody fins, then septicemia would be my guess and they would need to be treated with antibiotics (Kanacyn). Again check with Nick and see if he has any other ideas. Barb 9963

For example, one will read that neon tetras must be kept in acidic water, but if they have been acclimated to a high pH (alkaline) their entire lives, then they certainly do thrive under these conditions. Us folks in LA with our very hard and alkaline water can attest to this. Often messing with pH can lead to a pH that is bouncing up and down and these fluctuations are very stressful to fish and unhealthy for them. Barb (http://www.aquamaniacs.net) Aquamaniacs 9956

You probably have hard water with no buffering capacity. Therefore no matter how much pH down you add to the water, it may decrease only to bounce right back again. And fluctuation of the pH is harder on the fish than it being at a higher level constantly. About the only sure cure for this would be to invest in an R/O unit. A CO2 injector may help your problem also so this might be worth looking into. 9952

It's causes are many... bacterial, poisoning from such toxins as hydrogen sulfide, viral... to name a few. It unfortunately is rarely curable. Are you concerned that one of your fish as dropsy? Subject: Barb and Mary do you remember me fish with Dropsy? Posted by Natahsha on June 09, 101 at 01:21:44: I don't know if you remember me? I had the guppies and Otocinclus with Dropsy, 5 fish in a 5 gallon. Well anyways I thank you for all your help and I was able to save 2 of my guppy girls!!!! :) They were in very bad shape and I was ready to start over with the tank again, but they pulled through! They are playing now all the time and bloating is almost all gone. I quite all the medicine that I was using that I told you about nothing seem to work not even the Epsom salt helped but I did start feeding them Tetra medicated flakes and every day they got better. I had to keep them on the flakes a little longer then it recommended because they seem to take a turn for the worst every time I tried to take them off them. But they have now been off them a full week and are doing wonderful. The question is will I ever be able to put a new fish in with them? Or are their livers and kidneys too damaged and they are a huge risk for future diseases? Of course I would wait longer before I would add anything else, like in a month or two. If you thought it would be Ok? I was thinking of putting a male Betta in with the girls I know not to ever put a male Betta with male guppies. What do you think? You know I find that even the littlest fish have a lot of feelings when the other 2 guppies were dying these little girls that were sick on top went to the bottom to be with them and they would keep trying to nudge the one dying up. My sister also had 2 goldfish and 1 was blind the other one would push the blind one towards the food at feeding time. Thanks for all of your help! 9961

I think that you should allow the tank and previously sick fish to "stabilize" for 4 weeks before adding any new fish. Just the addition of new fish can be stressful to your fish and if you do it too soon, they may relapse with their disease. Are your fish healed? Are they eating normally and do they have a normal activity level? I believe that the big problem with bettas and gups is that if you are adding the fancy tailed ones, a betta sometimes mistakes this as another male betta and things then don't go so well. Thanks so much for the update! Barb (http://pub36.ezboard.com/baquariumbbs) Aquamaniacs 9981

I know that the males guppies have such big tails and that I would be very afraid to put them with a Betta but you still think the females may be a risk with one since their tails are not colorful like the males and not nearly as big as the males? I will definitely wait a month or 2 before I will put anything with them, that is if they seem all well and if you think it would be safe by then? Thank you once again! 10000

As is always the case with bettas, and other fish for that matter, compatibility comes down to the temperament of the fish involved. Mr. Betta will most likely be a nice guy, but sometimes a betta just won't get along with others, so he needs to live alone. I would just keep a good eye on the tank, when you introduce them, and you'll know fairly quickly if they are going to get on or not. Barb (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm3) Bettas 10013

If this is going to work it will all depend on the temperment of the betta. If he starts to pick on them the betta needs to go. Stress will lead to disease, which could very well bring on another bout of dropsey with your girls. Watch them at all times. More than likely if anything is going to happen it'll be while you are not looking. Glad to hear they got better. Rose 9960

The eggs sure sound like they are from your snails... go figure! :) Over what period of time did the cat's head get "big"? If it occurred over 1-2 days, then I would be concerned about Mouth Fungus, which is not really from a fungus but is from the Flexibacter bacteria and this condition does not have to occur just at the mouth... it can affect the face and head area too. Are his eyes bulging? Does it look like he has an abcess (big pimple) from trauma? Please give some more details about what you are seeing, so we can try to nail down the diagnosis and give him proper treatment. Also, describe the "patches"... do they almost have a slight white fuzzy look to them? If this big head occurred over a long period of time, then we can drop our level of concern way way down. If you suspect that he has something infectious, then isolate him to a hospital tank, so as not to infect the others. A treatment for Mouth Fungus is to treat with plain Maracyn (erythromycin) in the hospital tank water and feed him Tetra's Anti-bacterial flakes (oxytetracylcine), if he'll eat them. What I understand from you is that it is a mass under the skin. It could be an abscess. If it were a cancerous tumor, one might expect to see that in an older fish. What's the age here? How is your cory cat having difficulty getting around? Is it because this mass interferes with the normal working of the top fin? Is it something else? If you decide to treat with an antibiotic (and I don't know that to do so is the right answer), I would use Kanacyn (kanamycin). Mr. Pleco... are those patches kind of like a powdery coating with a grayish or yellowish tint to it? If so, that coupled with scratching here and there, sure sounds like Velvet (oodinium). This can be treated with Maracide. Carry out any treatment with medications in a hospital tank. Barb (http://www.aquamaniacs.net) Aquamaniacs 9945

Puffers in general are brackish, and when older, become marine(saltwater). Keep this in mind when purchasing a spotted puffer. Figure-8's are the ones that stay brackish their entire lives. For a tank, 15-30 gallons is best. Tall or hexagonal tanks seem to keep them swimming around than regular long tanks. They should have lots of caves and rocks for them to search in and out of and sand or fine gravel is the best substrate. Since they are BRACKISH (salt+freshwater), they do need SEA SALT (not aquarium salt) in their tank. Instant Ocean, for example, would be the kind you would use. You'll need a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity, which should be around 1.005-1.010. Don't worry if it varies, that's natural if they were actually in the estruaries. Puffers in general are nasty fish. Its just their nature. Fins are a part of their diet, so if you keep them with other puffers or fish (like mollies or gobies) then more than likely they will have nipped torn up fins. Its best to keep puffers with puffers or just alone. Food consists of everything. Anything seafood. Krill, shrimp, squid; snails(pond), and live/frozen bloodworms. Its very important to keep their diet varied and krill&snails should definetly be a part of their diet as they have teeth, and the shells on those food help wear them down. As for the poisonious thing, don't worry about it. They can't release toxins in the water (though a saltwater fish related to puffers called the Cowfish/boxfish, can easily kill an entire tank with their toxins). Probably the only thing they are dangerous towards is your wallet. They need variety and quality seafood to stay in the best of health. Any other questions you may have, feel free to ask! 9946

These are a brackish variety. I tried putting other fish with them, but these two were not friendly and were fin-nippers, so they stayed by themselves. We ended up taking them to a pet store. Puffers are a poisonous fish, I'm not sure if all varieties of them are poisonous though (this applies to eating them). People have died from eating them. I found when cleaning out their tank, that I was afraid of them. Can't remember, but think maybe read something about their bite can be poisonous? They are really cute in the fish stores though, I will agree on that. 9936
