You can maybe get by with 2 more angels, but these fish need a lot of room, especially the larger ones, and I would not overcrowd the tank. All depending on the temperament of the ones you pick, you may find they won't stand for anything else in the tank with them. If they are quite large, I would not add anything. 9690

Would it be a good ideah to get any more gouramies or are they the kind of fish that dont get along? I really like them they are so beautifull. Also, would different colors of gouramies cause a problem? 9718

Such as how long has he been in the tank as the "lone gourami", what other fish are with him, what variety of dwarf gourami he is and what other variety of dwarf gourami you want, how big he is, how many total you are willing to have, are you willing to give up some of the other fish to have more gouramies, what type of set up you have. That's just a few of the things to think about when getting more gouramies when one is already established. Let me know what your answers are and I'll be more than willing to share what I know about gouramies. (I'm not saying it's impossible to add more gouramies to a tank with one already established. It's just a little harder to do than adding more of some of the other community fish. I have researched the gouramies and know quite a bit about them as well as keep them. Don't be afraid to pick my brains if you wish.) Rose 9730

I am not sure what other kind I want because there are so many pretty ones. Wich would be best? I would like one or two more. I do not want to give up any of my other fish but I dont have two many right now. I have 2 albino and 2 tiger barbs, 2 upside down catfish that I never see, 2 mollies, 2 hatchet fish, a one and a half inch albino red finned shark, a ballon molly a snail and 2 alge eaters in my 30 gallon long tank. Wright now there seems to be a lot of empty space in their. What do you think? Thanks for your help, Noreen 9744

I have 1 Flame dwarf, 1 neon dwarf, 1 cinnamon dwarf and 2 Pearls. (Yes, this tank is crowded but it's all good. I'm really carefull on how I deal with this tank.) Dwarf Gouramies tend to spend most of the time in the upper part of the tank. They will go mid tank once in a while. They will get a long with every one in your tank as is, which is good. When getting gouramies it is better to have a lone gourami or 3 or more gouramies, never two. The reason is this. If you have only 2 one will end up being the dominate male and will pick on the other with no mercy. If you have 3 you will still get the dominate male but he will have more than one to pick on there by giving one a chance to hide for a bit while the other takes some picking on. As for picking out which gourami to get color doesn't matter. Just make sure you get dwarfs. With your Neon a Flame, Cinnamon or a Sunset will look really good. Just remember to get 2 at the same time. Once you get your two picked out and home you will need to rearrange the decorations in the tank. This will make everyone in the tank to find new territories. This will give the new guys a chance to find some nice place to call home with out getting to hassled. There will be some fighting but that will settle down in time. So don't fret if it does happen. I think that's about it for now. If you have any questions let me know. Good luck. Rose 9764

I believe they do better by themselves. I think the minimum tank size for Paradise fish is 10g. I'm not 100% sure on that. I'll have to look that up again. Another web site you might try is www.aquamaniacs.net I don't know if you know who Barb is on here but she's a moderator there as am I. I just through that out to give you another place to cross reference your info. The people there are friendly there too. I'm glad to hear that the gouramies are dong well so far. Keep an eye on them and let them have few spats to establish the pecking order. If things get too out of hand change the decorations around. That will normally get them to get along again. Good luck and keep us posted. Check out the other web site when you have a chance, let me know when you do. Rose 9689

At one point, pieces of his fins were falling off. All is now well and he's back to his normal, healthy self. However, there is a "film" on the top of his water and I'm wondering what it is. It looks kind of oily. I change his water at the recommended percentages at the recommended time intervals. After bringing home ich on a plant, he does not currently have any plants, only flat marbles and a thermometer in his 2-gallon goldfish-style bowl. He blows TONS of bubbles, but I'm concerned about this oily film. The rest of his water looks very clear. Please help. Thank you. 9695

When humans are around, my parrot just stays hiding and tilts its body against the walls of the cave or rock. I have managed to feed it about 12 brine shrimp(live) and a couple of blood worms with a turkey baster but thats all its eaten so far. My aunt is going to get another 2 parrots to keep my parrot company. I think my Parrot is just lonely because s/he is all by itself with no other fish. STATS... The tank is a 55 gallon tank with a Tidepool 1 filter which sits under the tank, and a small Eheim canister filter. The temp is at 79 degrees and the ph is around 7.5. Ammonia is 0 and the water hardness is neutral. I am thinking of adding some peat to the filter to lower the ph because I heard Parots enjoy a ph around 6.5 to 7.0. Hope this is enough info, thanks in advance! 9675

Subject: Breeding Oscars Posted by joshturbont.net) Josh on May 28, 101 at 20:26:40: Well obviously i'm not quite sure if i've got male and female oscars as this is next to impossible without picking up the fish and taking it out of the water (which would probably all but kill an oscar). However i've housed 2 oscars almost a year now in a 30 gal long. They came from the same tank at the same petshop and were like twins when i first got them. A year later one is significantly larger and more dominant. In fact about 5-6 months ago i even had a problem with one-sided fighting. To set these fish in the mood i've been told to raise the temp. to 82, put a flat piece of slate on the bottom, and cover the tank up because they are right in the main living room (where people are). Then sit and wait for magic to happen right? So far it's been a day, and nobody is doing the hibbitty dibbitty. Obviously it might take some time. However i was wondering if anyone else knew what might get these two in the mood given that they are of opposite sex. For all i know i'm turning two straight fish gay lol. I'd appreciate your thoughts and will keep you updated. Josh

Fin Rot: Common problem with bettas. Causes: Unclean water, ripped fins from too coarse a plant or decoration in with him or bacterial infection. Treatment: Aquarium salt at the rate of l teaspoon per gallon of water to start. If no improvement is seen after a week or so, then try the Maracyn II, but care needs to be taken not to overdose in such a small body of water. 9694

I sometimes don't get here to help folks as often as I need to. If she wants to go to the next level and examine how she cares for her betta, then she now knows where to find me. While most cases of fin rot will respond solely to clean water, it can spread to the body resulting in fulminant septicemia. Given that antibiotic treatment is relatively easy to administer, safe and inexpensive, I err on the side of avoiding the risk of death from septicemia. BTW, a torn fin is a different ball of wax than fin rot. A torn fin easily heals within a week with no treatment whatsoever. Fin rot can be an entirely different story. Barb 9697

You needed to explain it to the one looking for help, not send them somewhere else. I have been in the fishkeeping hobby for about 20 years, and thank Heavens, I don't readily need these boards for anything. But I do get amused at some of the posts and the answers. I looked over your "Aquamaniacs" site, and to be honest, I was not that impressed. The fish keeping hobby is not rocket science, and there is so much foolishness and technobabble going on there, that I am not quite sure how anyone learns too much. It appears to me that part of the reason you post on this board at all is to get this boards users to move to "Aquamaniacs". I am not trying to pick a fight, as that is childish in any respect; but on my infrequent visits to this nice site and messageboard, that is what I see. I won't bother you again, but my thought is if you can't take the time to help someone who asks a question on this board, why post anything at all? 9725

Subject: ICK y ICK y Neons - How do I treat neons for ICK Posted by EWsGhosthotmail.com) EWsGhost on May 28, 101 at 09:37:43: I lost two neons to ICK in the last couple weeks. I haven't treated the tank yet and only see one fish that has ICK. He only has 4 spots of it on him and seems to be doing fine. I bought a treatment at Wal Mart called ICK AWAY. The bottle says its for treatment of coldwater and saltwater aquariums. But on the back the instructions say "Do Not Use On Baby Fish, Tetras, or Scaleless Species" Do I go ahead and treat the tank with this or should I remove the fish. If I remove the infected fish does the tank still need treated?. Thanks EWsGhost 9662

Subject: Fish selection and what about those bubbles? Posted by gdjacobsonmindspring.com) Gary on May 28, 101 at 09:24:03: I'm starting a new 20 gallon tank, and after some initial pH problems I'm down to two fancy tail guppies and two zebra danios. Everything seems to be under control now, but here are my latest questions. The danios seem to be very territorial. The biggest keeps chasing the guppies away from the bottom of the tank up to the top, and also chasing the other danio. I put it on time-out in the breeding net while pondering what to do. With it out of action, the other danio has taken over the top fish position, although not quite as aggressive. Will the constant hounding of the guppies eventually kill them prematurely? I prefer the guppies to the danios. After the tank is fully cycled I want to add more fish. Should I stick with just guppies, or what other fish will live in with them in peaceful harmony? My second question: I have started to get persistent bubbles on the surface of the tank, and a little line of foamy bubbles at the edge of the tank. The tank has been in operation for a week. Is this normal; is it an indication of cycling progress; or is it something to worry about? BTW, thanks to Barb in answering my previous question for the link to the cycling article. It and other info from the aquamaniacs site has been a big help! Gary

I'm not talking about the action decorations put out by companies like pennplax. These ornaments stick to the sides of the tank with suction cups and move just by the bubbles from the air curtain passing over them, not by a direct airline hose. The ones i have seen are a wheel of some kind, usually it's a pinwheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.S. You are describing a lot of the physical signs of septicemia. It sounds as if you are seeing bloody splotches, streaks and perhaps even hemorrhage (bleeding) under the skin. Septicemia is an overwhelming total body bacterial infection and is often fatal. I would treat your sick gourami with Kanacyn (kanamycin) as your first choice antibiotic, in a seperate "hospital tank" (move this sick fish out of your main tank and away from your healthy fish). A second choice antibiotic would be Maracyn-Two (minocycline). What are your water parameters? That is, what are your current pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? If you do not have testing equipment at home, your LFS will usually test your water for you. You want to be sure that there is not a water chemistry problem such as an ammonia or nitrite spike, poisoning your fish. Barb (http://www.aquamaniacs.net) Aquamaniacs 9635

Stick with just the dwarves, and keep only females. As for the fancy guppies, its best to keep them to a species tank for the most brilliant colors, but I guess you can add them to the community. You don't want to have schooling fish in a tall tank. They need room to swim around in their school. Long tanks are best for keeping schooling fish. I would keep to the gouramis, and have a species tank. The tank could have a couple gouramis, and a huge school of corydoras. 8-10 corydoras would be an awesome thing to look at. 9624

But my guess is totally dependent on hoe long it's been since you did a good partial. If I've seen it once I've seen it a hundred times, people think everythings going great so they do nothing, then three or five months later they decide to do a major cleaning. An hour later all their fish are dead. Maybe this is what happened to you. Over time (w/o H2O changes) the pH of tank water tends to drop, after 3-4 months it might drop from 7.5 to 6.5... the end result after refill is a pH jump from 6.5 to 7.2 and the fish go into extreme and immediate shock. The moral of the story is to do regular monthly water changes (or more often if you prefer), and if time should pass you by and months elapse - then only do tiny 10% changes every few days and let your fish adjust gradually to the higher pH. 9684

If all your fish became very sick right after a water change, then look for a source of poisoning. For example, did you forget to add the water conditioners (such as AmQuel and NovAqua) to remove chloramines and chlorine from your tap water? Did someone use chemicals to clean the tank, such as spray the outside with Windex or something? Was the temperature of the water that you added back, the same temp or was it 100*F? Sometimes a gravel and tank cleaning that is too vigorous can destroy some of the good guy bacteria, which could lead to an ammonia or nitrite spike, though this would likely take longer than one hour. What are your water parameters? Finally, check that your equipment is working properly and that there is adequate aeration in the tank. Perform a large (50%) water change now, no gravel vac, to dilute whatever poison there is and if you have water conditioners as mentioned above at home add them in an attempt to save your last fish. Sorry to hear about all this. :( Barb (http://www.aquamaniacs.net) Aquamaniacs 9623

It is whether you have researched and learned all that you can about the (http://www.petplanet.com/ppc/_AAL41JDA1763/ContentSystem/article.html?CSID=8709) black widow tetra that determines how well you will do. I don't know much in particluar about these fish, except that you now own one who is aggressive and deadly and intolerant of any new additions to the tank. This is not a good situation unless you leave him alone there. He won't feel lonely. It really may be too late to introduce others into his territory.
