plain old goldfish. We have a small aquarium.
We added more water today to see if that makes
a difference and its eating normally. How much
should we feed it.The pet store said once a
day but on the food container it says 3 times a
day. Were a little confused on that matter and
were afraid were not giving it enough food.

If you feed your goldfish three times a day you need to feed them small amounts of food. If you feed the once a day it can be a big one but not to much ans much as they can eat in 5 mins. Also you need to soak the food for at least a min before you give it to them or they will get swim bladder problems.

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem that just occured w/ one of my iridescent sharks. A pinkish/white sore has appeared on the bottom fin right before its tail area starts. It seems to be okay but it has only had it for one day. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what it could possibly be and if it is a concern. I am new to all this so i am not really sure about many fish diseases and problems. Does this look like an open sore and is it about in the middle of his body. Could be lateral line disease that irridescent sharks are prone to. Sometimes this is hard to treat. What other fish do you have in the tank. Is one of the others attacking him?

Quick Question-
I have a 10 gallon tank that is currently using a submersible filter, however I'm very impressed with the hanging whisper filter I purchased for my other tank. The only problem is this 10 gallon has a bulky wooden frame on the top and bottom edge. So, the whisper filter when hanging on the back will not fit down over the edge. Does anyone have experience with this problem and found a good solution? Do any of the filter brands make a wider gap between the hanging part and the intake that sticks down in the tank?

I would think a canister filter would be a bit of overkill for a 10 gallon tank. Have you checked out Aqua Clear filters. It might be a little wider where it would fit over the top. And also maybe the penguin filters. Both of these are very good.

baby guppies love sparilina flakes, brime shrimp, worms as long as they are very tiny. I would giver her at least a week before you breed her to give her some rest, but of course guppies can store the sperm of males in side for up to three fry batches before they are done. So she should have more babies in a few with out you breeding her again.

Good question! My guppy is pregnant, and had one fry yesterday. She still has a nice black spot on her, so I am hoping for more. We suspect that the one may have been premature because we found it soon after causing some major commotion in adjusting the tank. It is happy in the breeder net, and seems to be occasionally nibbling at some TetraMin flakes. I, too, would like an opinion of whether this food alone is sufficient.
Also, how can I have a better indication of when she will deliver more? Appearance? Behavior? She seems to have gotten a bit brown.
Thanks.

Very tiny crushed flakes are okay for fry. Or there is dry "fry food" which can be purchased that is very good. Live food is good if available and you have the time to provide it.
I will tell you all a little secret. It is much better for the fry to have places to hide instead of putting them in a net. Plants scattered throughout the tank work great. They need room to swim, very many do not fit comfortably in a net, and you won't always be able to keep an eye to know when babes are arriving.
Guppies will breed over and over again. Let nature take its course. You will have more babies at any time from now on, and trying to keep that close an eye on everything will drive you crazy. I started out with 5. I now have about 40 to 45, and see new ones every couple of weeks. Plants for them to hide in, fry food for everyone and they are healthy, active and producing babies left and right!

It sounds pretty good to me as long as you don't add all these fish at the same time. Two to start. Wait at least a week or two and add a couple more. I will tell you a little secret. If this is your first tank, don't get the neons for awhile. They are not an easy fish for beginners and their water perimeters need to be just right in order for them to survive. Also a shoal of at least 5 to 7 make a much prettier display so you may want to have more of them and less of something else.

Cories are bottom dwellers and like company, so I would say at least 3. Also might I mention that cherry barbs are shoaling fish, and you really need some more of them, say 3 to 5. Only problem I see is with 4 gouramis, you might have a bit of overcrowding. But you are utilizing the top and middle sections of your tank, and with the addition of the cories, the bottom will be taken care of as well.

Raw meat can pose a problem with fish. I would not advise this. There are too many betta foods on the market to risk introducing some form of bacteria into his bowl. Also any fat that is in any kind of meat will foul the water. Stick with the betta foods. You will be glad that you did.

Before I can answer you, you need to answer some questions for me.
No. l: How long have you had him?
No. 2: What kind of bowl/tank is he in and is there any plants in his home.
No. 3: When was the last time you did a l00 percent water change?
If you are not dosing with the medication properly, you may be poisoning him, and mixing meds is not a good idea. It could just be that he is "resting" on the bottom. And it could just be that he is bored. And it could be that his water is not of optimal conditions for him. Give me some details and maybe we can figure out if he is really sick.

We have had our beta for about 1 year now and he has been doing well until just recently. He sits on the bottom of the bowl and every so often he comes up to the top and right back down. His fins seem to be clumped together. His eating habits are about the same as they were but he isn't as active. I have changed his bowl because I had him in a 2 gallon glass bowl that was too heavy for me to change. I now have him in a bowl about 1 gallon glass bowl. I put the same rock in the new bowl and I also have a plant that has been in there all the time. I would appreciate it if anyone could help us. He used to swim up and down alot but now he mostly sits at the bottom.

If this behavior started when you changed bowls that is probably the culprit. Sometimes changes in environment "upset" fish, and it may take several days for them to become used the their new environment. I don't know if you are speaking of regular bowls that are made for fish or fancy containers of some sort. Be sure if it is the fancy container variety that the glass is not lead crystal. The lead will leech into the water and kill your fish.
MEMEME mentioned about a mirror. This is a good way for a lone betta to exercise, but after a while this will, indeed, stress the fish. Occasionally holding the mirror up to him and letting him flare is fine, but don't leave it for long periods of time.
If he is eating okay, nothing is noticable on his body and he is not gasping for breath or having rapid gill movement, I think he is just trying to get used to his new home. If any other signs are visible to you, write back and we will see what we can suggest.

MEMEME, Thanks for the suggestion. It has been a little while that we changed the bowl and I'm not sure about the lead in the bowl which may very well be except it isn't fancy just a smaller bowl we purchased from Wal-Mart. What concerns me is that his fins are not spread like they once were and he seemed to loose some of his color. He does come up rather suddenly for air and then right back down in the rocks with his nose in between the rocks. At first I was only feeding him Betta Bites and then I got some blood worms that he didn't seem to enjoy so I got some other treat that is supposed to enhance his color. He likes that but I elected not to feed him that when he had changed his behavior. He eats and is ready to eat in the morning but soon after that he does the same routine. Do you think I am feeding him too much.

Your betta probably has clamped fin. You need to treat him with an antibiotic called Maracyn or Maracyn 2. Look at the packages to see which one is for clamped fin. Clamped fin can be caused by poor water quality. How often do you change his water and are you conditioning it when you change it?Small bowls need to be changed every 2 or 3 days. If he's sitting on the bottom all the time he proably doesn't feel very well.

One question I do have is: How do I stop my fish from eating my plants? I would love to live plants and have tried to twice, but the little bastards eat them to shreds, especially my angelfish. If you are keeping plant eating fish (herbivores) sorry to say, there is nothing that will keep them from eating your plants. There are varieties of fish that don't do this, and if you want to have live plants, you need to look into keeping these kinds of fish.
Sometimes plecos are not interested in the lettuce/vegetable food that is placed in a tank. I have a pleco that will not eat any of that stuff either, therefore, I have to make sure not to clean the algae off the plants, rocks or glass so that he remains healthy. As long as you have algae in the tank, he probably will be feeding fine.
Also.......Please watch your language. Swearing is not permitted here!!

I don't know where Lynn got her information but I have never heard of such a thing. I would say that fish communicate with their bodies and their movements. Some fish "speak" with croaking noises. Have you ever heard a dolphin? There are noises created in water that humans cannot hear without the right equipment. But there is alot of communication going on in a body of water with fish that nature will not allow us to experience.

just for eveybodys info goldfish dont get pregnant they are egg layers. Female goldfish will look more rounder when they are ready to mate the male goldfish will have white tubicles on there gills. The male will chase the female around the the tank and push her in the butt and in to plants to squeeze out the eggs.
I do have information on my site for breeding and how to, pics of my goldfish and links to other great sites.

Subject: poorly maintained tank under new ownership
Posted by rebeccadesignhome.com) beccy on June 01, 101 at 10:24:05:
Hi there.
I have recently been give the go ahead to take over a 10g tank that has been very poorly maintained. I won't go intot he who, why, where, what, I just want to tell the story that matter to the surviving fish.
I will be moving in 2 months and won't bring the tank to my house until that time and want to spend that time reconditioning the tank for clean healthy living.
This is the story
Month 1- Tank is set up with rocks, fake plant, lamp, filter, heater and 6 tropical fish
Month 2 - due to the fact that the water is never changed (only added when it evaporates down about 1" and added straight from the tap, no additives) and gravel never cleaned the tank starts to get a little grungy so a black algae eater is added to the throng
Months 3-4 - 2 fish die & 2 dissapear (assumed to have been eaten by the others
Month 6 - lamp burns out, is never replaced
Months 7 on - fish go prolonged periods without ANY feedings, up to 3 weeks at a time!
Month 14 - plastic plant is now floating on top
Month 16 on - the filter, having never been changed, now only trickles out water
Month 18 - the suction cup on the thermometer has let go and it now floats aimlessly in one corner of the tank
Month 20 - These people shouldn't even own a chia pet and I say enough is enough I'm going in.
There are 3 survivors. The algae eater (3" long), a blue fish (1-1/2") and a yellow fish (2")
The tank has miraculosly never had a disease.
I have a plan, but I want someone with more experience to help me refine it.
Starting this weekend I will do some gravel cleaning and a 10% water change (with treated water). Over the next 8 weeks I will continue with water changes every 5-7 days until I have worked up to a 40% change the weekend before the move.
I am buying a lamp this weekend. Should I ween these guys back into light? The room they are in is very dark and they get little to no natural sunlight. I don't want them to be blinded by a brand new bulb after 14 months of almost no light.
I am removing the plastic plant and replacing it with a live plant from my own aquarium.
I will be buying a new filter. Should I soak the new one in their current water before adding it? or should I squeeze the good bacteria from the old one into the water?
Is there anything else I should add to the tank? They have survived on very little food so I don't want to overdo it now. Currently they get fed every 5-6 days (whenever I am there). My 10g aquarium gets fed twice daily, but I think that would be to much for these guys. Maybe regular feeding every 2nd day for now?
And finally when the move comes - any suggestions? I think I will keep 1-2 gallons of the water from their tank to add to the new water. The 3 fish will be in a temporary tank while I thoroughly cleanse theirs and set it up with new rocks. I may keep this 10g as a QT tank and get a new 33g as well.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. These 3 fish are definately very tough and I'd hate to kill them while trying to make things better.I don't know what kind of fish they are - I will look at the LPS and see if I can figure it out. I'm new to aquariums and have only had mine for 3 months and can only identify the types of fish that I have!
Oh yeah, the fish right now seem very healthy. They swim around and are very active. There is no scum build up on top of the water or anything like that, but it is a bit murky (it's hard to tell without any light really).
Thank you!

If you have chemical testing equipment, you might want to test to see how high levels of ammonia, nitrite/ate are. I'm sure the tank is cycled, as long as there is filtration, the water should be good. 10% water changes could be done a little sooner together. 1-2 days is plenty, specially for hardy fish. If they're only used to food once every 5 days, you can give them smaller amounts daily or every 2-3 days until they're used to eatting regularly. I would also guess that the fish that disappeared could have been sucked to death by the algae eatter. They'll do that sometimes. Good luck.

Also when I go to feed them the male will eat all the food before the female and if she manages to to get out and eat he chases her around again. What should I do? Should I put both females in and see what happens? Or will that give the male to many choices when it comes to mating to the point he won't be able to decide which one or what? Please somebody help!!

Well I don't know much about breeding tiger barbs but I do know that you need breeding grass so that they will lay their eggs, & you need to go to a webpage to find out the exact temp. they need to mate in, if the water is not a certain temp., they will be uninterested in mating. If this is not the case & you have done all this before hand, then maybe they are uninterested because they do not accept the color or trend of the other, some tiger barbs are very picky. As for him chasing them around, my sisters 2 male tiger barbs do the same thing, it's just a game of dominincy in the tank, nothing to worry about, it also maybe that the male is trying to get the female to mate with him, or that he is doing something similar to what a betta does, he chases the female around until she is too tired to run from himm then he mates with her.You should probably check out this website & see what it says about tiger barbs & their mating habits.Like I said, I'm no expert.

The purpose of feeding "skinned" peas is to aid them in the case of constipation. I would not make a regular habit out of this. Bettas are primarily meat eaters and the variety of foods that you are feeding is sufficient, and he should be getting the proper nutrients. Betta biogold and betta bites, specifically made for bettas, may be an option for you otherwise. Sometimes the flakes are too hard for them to grasp in their mouths and most just plain don't like them. And the compatibility with the tetras is not of much importance. If they don't like what you are feeding, they won't eat it. Just make sure that the betta is getting his fare share and is not shooed away at feeding time by the tetras.

They move around more at night usually, but lighting is not worry for them. You should have plecos in an established tank with some algae for them to eat so they won't starve to death. The spirulina is fine, if he does get some of it, but much better is romaine lettuce or a raw potato. Usually the others don't much care for those, and you will be ensuring your pleco has food. You will need a clip to hold the lettuce under the water surface and the potatoe can be tied with a rubber band to a rock or decoration in your tank. Leave these in the tank for a number of hours as the plecos can be constant eaters, which is okay for them.

They like zucchini too, variety is good. They also like a weekly small piece of fish for protein - I haven't figured out a good way to hold this in place yet. And meat shouldn't be in water too long, I have learned from raising piranhas - maybe 10 - 15 minutes, and plecs eat so slowly, well ... obviously I haven't figured out the meat thing.
You didn't say how large your plecos were, or what kind - their diet can vary. For a sailfin, a 14" might eat 8 spirulina tablets a day, in addition to it's necessary tree root rasping. But you shouldn't just feed them tabs. I give my 9" maybe 3-4 tablets a day and a piece of veggie almost every night, clean up in the morning. Watch for excess algae and cut down feeding accordingly. Plecos should be on the plump side, rounded tummies.

I have a ten gallon tank with seven Black Skirts and an Emerald Green Cory. I tested the PH and it was very low 6.2. I adjusted and checked the next day, it was back down again. What is causing this and is it OK? The fish do not seem to be in any distress. The skirt color comes and goes.

Changing the pH of your water can be very hard to do. There can be several reasons why your pH is low....the water chemistry, substrate, possibly a piece of driftwood or peat in your tank....A constant lower pH is better than one that is bumped up to just fall again. If the tetras appear to be acting normally, I would leave well enough alone as the bouncing up and down will create stress for them. I will tell you that if this is the constant pH of your water, you could do great things with a larger tank to house discus or angels. I envy you as mine is always very close to the 8 mark and I prefer not to invest hundreds of dollars or the work involved with RO units, etc. to lower it.
You might take into consideration that if these are juvenile fish, they can grow rather large, and your 10 gallon tank just might not be large enough to house all 7 plus the cory when they grow to adulthood. I have tetras that are close to 3 inches in length each to give you an idea just how large some tetras can get.

Two turquoise gouramis and two royal flame gouramis they are very perdy in my colorful tank. They look like they were supposed to be there. Well i just thought i'd share that with you. If you guys have any colorful tankmate suggestions i'd love to hear them.

P.S. I also put in a lone cherry barb with them he was previously in a five gallon tank by himself i thought it was time he made some new friends, besides i needed his tank for feeder fish for my oscars.

Don't do Mollies, the gouramies don't like a lot of salt in their tank water. Mollies need a lot of salt to keep them happie and healthy. Some tetras will do good with your gouramies. Don't get any that will nip or get too roudy. Gouramies won't like that. They look spectacular in a planted tank with Neon Tetras or Harlequin Rasboras as tank mates. That's probably a bit more work than you want to mess with. It's just a thought. I do have gouramies in a planted tank that's why I thought of it.
You have some very nice gouramies. Congrats and hope you enjoy them. Rose

Hi - I'm new to this board, really enjoyed reading the posts - some fun, some informative, many both :).
Can anyone tell me if frayed pectoral fins on an angel mean fin rot or more likely nipping? I've had these fish a week now. The rest of their fins seem fine, and I see a few spots on a couple of them, but very few, maybe missing scales? They are all new, and I'm just hoping I'm not going to find out they have ick or fin rot or some such.
Thanks so much. I'd like to finish changing my gravel but thought I better find this out first.

Subject: black moors dying in cloudy water
Posted by tarakheritagecalgary.ab.ca) tara on May 30, 101 at 10:49:54:
hi,
i'm new at this home aquarium business so please forgive me if my information is not as technical as it should be! i recently got a tank (i'm guessing about 6 gallons) with a 15 watt light and 3 (1.5") black moor fish (they look like black goldfish with bulging eyes).
okay, so i'm a rookie at this and i didn't realize the ecological need for gravel at the bottom so after a few days the water had become cloudy and my fish had developed white cloudy spots over their eyes and "noses". they were also hanging out near the top
and looked like they were gasping for air. in a panic i rushed to the petstore and was told they might have ick and was told to buy some drops that cure a few things (like cloudy spots and the like), some new food, and (after reading your website) a bag of gravel.
so i went home, changed 1/4 of the water, added the gravel, a few drops of the "medicine", removed the lamp (i was told the heat might be making bacteria multiply) and waited. (i was told not to do a full water change for a few days so that i didn't shock them too much).
so the water continued to get cloudier, their behavior didn't change and within 2 days one fish had died. i was very worried about disease in the tank so i decided to risk shocking them and did a full water change, added the drops, and kept the lamp off. so the water was
clear and the fish livened up, swimming around more and generally occupying more of the tank. then (of course) the water started to turn cloudy again and they started to move ALOT slower (sometimes not even "wagging" their fins). then the water seemed too cold, so i
put the lamp back on and lo and beholds they livened up again... but within two days the second fish died. so now i am left with one fish and he has started to stay at the bottom of the tank laying in one spot and isn't even really interesested in food. i am confused as to what
i am doing wrong and i really don't want to lose this little guy! i also don't want him to be all alone but i'm worried about making him more sick or making another guy sick so i won't do anything until i get this cleared up. i don't think i'm feeding too much (only a small pinch of
food twice a day- which was gone in a minute in happier days when all 3 fish were alive and healthy). i change about 1/3 of the water weekly and am very careful about temperature and adding the drops. i don't have an air pump or heater (didn't think they needed one) and
just use (treated) tap water left sitting out overnight for water changes. any insight would be greatly appreciated (by both me and mr.fish) because i want to make sure that i'm doing everything i can for this little fish!
thank you so much for your help!

Re: (9712.html) black moors dying in cloudy water posted by tara on May 30, 101 at 10:49:54:
Hi Tara;
Your suffering from new tank syndrome. Which means
your tank has not cycle and therefore does not contain
the beneficial bacteria needed to keep your fishes
healthy. It takes about 6 weeks to cycle a tank. I'm
sure others can explain it better but roughly this is
it. You can either cycle your tank without fishes
adding a certain amt of ammonia daily until it is
cycled and you have the good bacteria nitrAte
registering in your water (need test Kit)or; you
can use one or two small hardy fishes which will
produce the ammonia needed by way of poo, urine and
(uneaten)decaying food. Cycling with fish your
tank will go through three stages: 1) AMMONIA
will register when you test the water (need test
kit), at this stage you need to do water changes
if necessary everyday to keep ammonia level as low
as possible (ammonia is toxic and will kill your
fishes) 2) NitrIte (again you need test kit) will
be registering (will seem like forever) NitrIte is
much more toxic than the ammonia so again water
changes to keep the level down as low as possible
like .05. 3) finally you have the good bacteria
NitrAte, after nitrAte shows up wait a week before
adding any more fishes and only add 1 fish per week
or you will go back to cycling. Now to the
dissapointing fact. You choose black moors which
are goldfishes. In the proper environment (tank
size, nutrition and also genetics) they reach the
size of grapefruits. Because of their mass size
they require minimum of 10 gallon per fish. Even
at 1.5" they will either grow or be stunted very
quickly depending on their tank size. Goldfishes
are also coldwater fishes but fancy type which includes
the black moors do better in temperatures of 70 to
76 degrees. Do continue to use the drops as letting
the water sit does not remove chloramine. Adding
aquarium salt will help your fishes make it through
the cycling. 1 tablespoon for each 5 gallon of
water. Good Luck

You basicly have a bad case of new tank. If the white spots look like salt dots then you have ick but if they are big white like cotten spots then you have fugus. You also need a water clairafier like Amquel to get rid of ammonia toxicons. You need aquarium salt for them too about 1 teaspoon for every gal of water every time you change the water. Theres is much more you need to learn for goldfish, they are not an easy fish to raise. If you like you can go to my site I have a site dedicated to Fancy Goldfish.

I hope you visit and really go to Ten easy steps to a happy and healthy goldfish.

Oh, Dear Child. You have a lot to learn. The first thing you should do before starting this tank up again, is learn quite a few things concerning the hobby.
First, I will tell you 6 gallons is not near large enough for 3 goldfish (black moors require the same things as a goldfish). Secondly these fish need filtration and aeration in their water and some type of substrate (gravel) plus they are coldwater fish and like temps of about 65 to 68. And thirdly, even though you set the water out overnight, you need water conditioners as this does not get rid of chloramines that are also in the water supply. Fourthly, the illness you describe is called cloudy eye, and the main reason for this is unsanitary water conditions.
Unless, you learn properly of the care of fish, tanks and about the ecology of an aquarium, I fear you will not be successful.
I am pretty sure there is an article right here at petfish that will get you started on a much better course for caring for you next try at fishkeeping. You can never learn too much about the hobby, and in order to learn, you must read. With the net at your fingertips, you will find a great abundance of very good information. Good Luck!

You need more females in the tank. For every male guppy you can have aleast 5 females. The male guppies are quite aggressive if there is more males in the tank than females. In my tank I always try to have more females in my tank than males. So I have to do a run to the pet store for credit every three months or so sence they breed so much, but I try to keep most of the females.

Given that you just have one female in the tank with two males (and one unknown), she is the "sole" target of their desires and she probably will never get any breaks. I had just one male molly in the tank with three females, and he sure could harass all of them. Sometimes I would put "him" in the breeder tank just to give the women a break and give him a time out. I finally moved him permanently into a tank with 3 month-old mollies, he doesn't chase them. He seemed enough upset about this move for a couple weeks, wouldn't join the crowd at feeding time. Now he seems pretty happy in there and he still doesn't chase anyone. The 3 female mollies look very content.
