A tank full of just 5-7 kuhlies would look awesome, especially with some caves and rocks that they can swim through. Also, if you use a red light for the tank, you can see them during their night behavior. And, a group of kuhlies will bunch up all together like a plate of spaghetti! Or You could have just a male betta with some ghost shrimp. A dwarf African frog tank with 2-3 frogs with ghost shrimp or a snail. And depending on your experience, you could keep some bumble-bee gobies. What you DON'T want to have in a 5 gallon are: Schooling fish (ex.tetras, minnows, corydoras) Livebearers (ex. guppies-will over populate tank very quickly) I know loaches are schooling fish, but they are not as active as regular schoolers, plus they love to bury themselves in the sand and stay pretty small. Have fun and use good judgement. Remember, you want to be a fishKEEPER, not a fishHAVER :) 9967

Subject: "playing dead" ... Not playing any more. Posted by Christy on June 08, 101 at 13:36:55: original posting...Small bubbles on fish..."playing dead" dated 6/7/01. I did some research and that is a Clown Loach. last night he when belly up for a while I thought for sure he was gone. Usually if a hand is waved in front of the tank were he is he will swim off. He didn't. But as I went to collect him he swam away. The bubbles are looking more like Ick, but the Clout I used before stressed him out.(gills worked overtime, other fish didn't seem to be affected) I heard from a wal-mart that if you put a towel on the tank during treatment that it will slightly raise the temp. and provide a dark stress free envirement to heal. I have done so, is that correct? The temp is steady at almost 80F. I am treating for Ick with Aquari-Sol that contains Zyxosin.(Soluble Copper Salts the bottle says) Should I raise the temp to 85F? The bottle also says this. I heard that its not safe. If so the heater I have is an automatic temp. for 5-10 gallon tanks. (I have the 5g.) Without the towel I have a constant temp. of 75F. I plan to get rid of the Pleco and the Loach as stated before, but no one is going to take a sick fish. A big THANK YOU in advance this site is great! 9937

Not playing any more. posted by Christy on June 08, 101 at 13:36:55: Christy, I hate to tell you this but the stuff you are useing to get rid of Ick doesn't work all the time. Raising the temp is a good idea ONLY if you already have a handle on the ick. I just got done treating my 55 with Rid Ick+. My 55 has Clown Loaches and they did excellent with this med. This is what I did. I left the temp at 78*. One day one I did a 50% water change and cleaned the gravel really well. I added half the dose that is recommended on the bottle. I did that so I could see how they would react to the med. On day two (my fish did real well) I did a half dose every 12hrs( I did 2 half doses on day 2). On day 3 (fish did really well) I did the full dose (I did 1 full dose on day 3). During the rest of the treatment I did 1 full dose daily till the spots were gone and continued another 3 days after that just to make sure I got it. The day after the last dose I did a 50% water change and cleaned the gravel real well and moved all the decorations around so I could get under them. I also (every day) did a 30% water change. It's recommended so that the meds won't kill off your good bacteria in the tank. If you have any questions ask. Rose 9968

Not playing any more. posted by Rose on June 08, 101 at 17:08:32: You've got it Rose! Raising the temp without having anti-Ich meds well on board can accelerate the Ich's lifecycle leading to an overwhelming Ich infection and death. It is best to leave the temp under 80*F during treatment. Be sure to perform a 25-50% water change before each daily dosing of RidIch+. Remove carbon during treatment. I agree with Rose's approach of dosing for the first time with 1/2 the RidIch+ dosage and be sure that your fish are suffering no distress (gasping at the surface or erratic behavior). If your fish experience this, then quickly squirt AmQuel into the tank, add back your carbon and perform partial water changes to normalize the situation. If all goes well (and it usually does with scaleless and sensitive fish), subsequent dosing should be at the recommended full doasge. The typical length of time of treatment with RidIch+ is about 7 days. In any event, you want to continue treatment for a full three days after the very last Ich spot has fallen off even if this means continuing treatment for longer than 7 days. Check out my (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm1) Help forum, which has a number of recent and informative threads about loaches and Ich. Barb (http://www.aquamaniacs.net) Aquamaniacs 9995

I covered them in a towel and kept it dark as stated in the previous message. I almost killed all of them. I guess the dark wasn't good. I treated with a parisite med. (Jungle, doesn't specify directly for ich.)I could not find the RidIch+. The color is back on them now, the black is also back on the clown loach and the pleco but also are the bubbles I was talking about. They really don't look like salt or sugar as far as being white. They look like the tinyest bubles that come from the bubble wall I have. The loach and the gourami are itching and the pleco is obviously uncomfortable and darting around the tank. Do I treat for ich or get a more general paracite medication? If so, What? PS.- I LOVE frogs and turtles, when I heal and get rid of the loach and the pleco would it be wise to get a frog. I seen one in the pet store, a dime size african something? The Plati and the dwarf gourami would be left in the 5g. Bio-wheel filter. plastic plants. You may be using a product that will get the job done for most parasites, including Ich. The only problem is that you likely need to dose at 1/2 dose, so as not to harm your loach. I'll know more once you tell me which Jungle product you are using. It's important to know whether you saw an African Dwarf frog (cute and compatible with a lot of fish) OR an African Clawed frog, who will eventually grow up BIG and enjoy eating the fish in your tank! I would have trouble with that, as there isn't anywhere to put it that doesn't get direct sun in this house. The morning sun spans the back of the house and the hot evening sun spans the full front of the house. That is bad for the tanks, right? He still is not using it though. He just didn't look well on Thursday and when I came into work on Friday they all looked terrible. My medium sized Oscar had a big white patch with some white stringy stuff coming out of it. I double checked a website on Oscars that described HITH as having some stringy stuff coming out of it. I RAN to the pet store and got some stuff but I didn't check it for metrodiwhatever. It said it cured HITH so I grabbed it. Yesterday when I went in to clean my fish tank the white patch was considerably smaller but all his stripes which were normally purple are dark black. Should I worry about that? I'm going in right now to give them another dose of the medicine and I'll do 50% water change as well. I also read on the website that HITH is due to poor nutrition. I had no idea what to feed these Oscars when they were given to me so I just got some flake food at the pet store for Chichlid. I give them live fish once a week as well. Is the flake food bad for Oscars? I really really don't want these guys to get sick. I've grown too attached. Thanks everyone for all the help rendered any thank you in advance for any additional help offered. I really like my Oscar, his name is Vicious the Fishus since he can't just eat his flake food he has to attack it. :) 9996

Does your fish have popeye and fin rot? The Maracyn 2 will treat both. In a small bowl you have to cut the dosage way down by breaking the tablet up. Treat for 5 days. In a small bowl you should change the water every 2 or 3 days. Usually over feeding and poor water quality can cause fin rot. Before medicine do a complete water change. Return fish to clean, warm, medicated water. Package says not to change water for 5 days so I'm not sure how to handle this. Hopefully Barb will see your post. Please stop the Aquari-Sol as this does nothing to treat fin rot. As your betta is acting sickly from fin rot, you've got a problem bigger than that. Generally, bettas with a little fin rot carry on life as usual. Your's is sluggish and may have pop-eye (is the eye bulging out?), indicating that either the infection has spread to the body or the water conditions are poor. How big is this bowl? How often and how much each time, are you changing the water? What is the temp of the water in the bowl (or what is your room temp?). Subject: please, need some advice for a zebra pleco with ich? Posted by leah on June 08, 101 at 00:46:14: I just got a zebra pleco and a Betta today from 2 different breeders. Which was a very bad idea because I only have 1 quarantine tank, but being that I had such good luck with breeder fish, like a dummy, I end up getting them both. There they were at the auction site 2 fish I really wanted and 2 fish that were going to be sold to someone else if I did not take now. I should of known better. The zebra pleco has white spots all over him I am not sure if it is just a part of him or this is ich? He was sent over night delivery. The breeder has wonderful feedback and very nice, so I would have thought that they would not have sent the fish if they thought it was ich. Could it got the ich from stress of being shipped? It must have happend really quick it is hard for me to believe that ich could have got this bad overnight or could it? I did not see the white spots until later when I turned the light on in the tank. So there is the new betta that looks very healthy that arrived today and a zebra Pleco with ich? I don't know what to do I have no other empty tank to put either fish in and I don't want to stick the betta in my healthy tanks for fear that he might have already got the parasite from the zebra. I also don't know what to treat the zebra with, the catfish seem very sensitive to ich meds. I don't even know if this is in fact ich. It really looks like ich but I know nothing about ich with the zebra plecos. I have never spent this much on fish before they were very expensive to me and to loose them besides the fact that it upsets me so much when a fish dies but would also be a big loss financially. Please can someone help? I don't want to put the betta in a bowl or anything besides the cycled tank and the reason for that is I have had bad luck with bettas in uncyled tanks and with the temperature droping to low at night without it's heater. Thank you so much for any advice that you can give and if you can't give any information thank you so much for just taking the time to read this. 9916

BTW, which ich meds do you use? . 9926

I normally use malachite green with some maracyn, although I have never treated a zebra for ich before and today the betta has no white spots but I did catch him itching so I am afraid he has got it now too. I have never treated a betta for ich either. The medicines that I see to treat ich a lot of them say to only treat 1 time and then a second if needed although I know that ich can take a lot longer to hatch before you can kill it so I don't know how long I should treat for? Posted by Christy on June 07, 101 at 06:22:23: I have a Dwarf Gourami,Plati,Pleco alge eater, and a red finned large yellow and black stripes on body bottom feeder. All in a five gallon tank that has been set up and going with no problem since Feb/01. Until now. I noticed on the gourami that there were small bubbles on the body. Not like ICK. Almost like it went thru the bubble wall and the bubbles didn't come off,for a week. Then the fin by the gills was clamped to the side of the body and a little bloody. I tried Clout. That worked. Gourami looks better, fin looks and works good. NOW while all this is going on, I noticed that the others on occasion just "play dead" on the bottom of the tank or suspended in the tree. Especially the striped bottom feeder. Wl-mart gave me a sample of Maracyn that I used. The rest look great and the bottom feeder is still doing the "playing dead" and has the small bubbles on him. I am out of solutions. Everything I seem to read my fish has a little of that. Do I treat for ICK, body fungus, bacteria? I'm going to lose him or my favorite...The gourami. 9892

"playing dead"..Disease?? posted by Christy on June 07, 101 at 06:22:23: Solution is a much, much, much larger tank than what you have now. Your fish are way too crowded in the 5g you have them in and are so stressed it's no funny. For one thing a Pleco should not be kept in a tank smaller than a 55 (they get real big.) Two, Platties need company of their kind to be happy. A 5g tank is too small for Platties. They like to have lots of room to swim. Three, the algae eater may not be the best thing for a 5g tank (depending on what kind of algae eater you have.) Four, the Gourami will do ok in a 5g but will be happier in a 10. As for the bottom feeder it will probably do better in a bigger tank as well. Your solution is to get a bigger tank (10g min) and keep the bottom feeder and the Gourami and get rid of the rest or get a 55 and keep them all. I think once you get a bigger tank you will see your fish start to become active again and what ever is on them will go away with a little meds. Keep up on your water changes that will go a long way towards keeping your guys happy and healthy as well. I don't have a clue as to what your guys have so I'm not going to recommend anything other than what I have already said. Rose

I don't think it's hole in the head disease because it is so far back on his body. I'm really going on the belief that it is a wound possibly from the flat slate i recently put in the tank to see if the two would mate. Sometimes they'll get scared of something and dart around destroying anything in their path. I think this is what he was doing when he got the wound. So my question is, is it most likely a wound? Also if it is just a wound is there any medicine i can give the fish to keep it clean and or make it heal better. I'd really appreciate your help and advise, thank you anyone who replies. Josh 9874

Since the tank is sooo small I change the filter every 1-2 days and vaccum all the dust out at least once a week. I'm also giving them real fish once a week to vary their diet. Do you think that it could be ick? I gave them an ick tablet conditioner yesterday but I left the filter on so I don't know how much good it did. Should I try again? If there is Ick, I would treat it as soon as possible. Once the White spots are gone, I would continue treating the tank for a little longer to make SURE the Ick parasite has no living cysts left. Vaccuuming also helps fight Ick. For the filteration, I would not use any carbon and all that should be used is a sponge or filter wool. I'm sure you notice this but your tank is WAY overpopulated!!! Oscars can grow to 14 inches in length! I reccommend you get a bigger tank as soon as possible! Your one-gilled oscar seems to be gasping for oxygen because you descirbe his mouth as a big gaping hole that opens and closes. This is a sign of low oxygen levels so I would recommend a meidium airstone in the tank for some surface agitation. Hope this helps! good luck LAnce 9893

Unless you have a bio-wheel, you are removing your bacteria colony every time you change the filter. This will allow harmful level of ammonia and nitrite to accumulate in the water. I would do daily 25-50% water changes since your tank is cycling. You can rinse the filter cartrige in the old tank water (not tap water!) to clean it. 9898

No? posted by Jenny on June 07, 101 at 10:48:29: Do your fish actually have ick? Do they have white spots all over their scales and fins? If not, you're probably doing more harm than good by medicating them. I think you should go buy a water testing kit, one that tests for ammonia and nitrite. If either of these values are more than zero, then your tank is cycling and the fish are being poisoned by the water. Then you're going to have to do daily or every other day water changes to dilute the toxicity of the tank water. Don't vacuum the gravel every time. Aquariums need bacteria to detoxify the fish waste. They convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate(the nitrogen cycle). If you clean your filter with tap water or completly change it, then you've removed the most of the bacteria. I wouldn't bother with the bio-wheel, unless you plan to add more fish to the 10 gallon after you set up the larger tank. It takes 4 to 6 weeks to cycle a bio-wheel and it wouldn't be large enough for a 55 gallon tank. 9920

Subject: ONE MOLLEY DOWN, WORRIED ABOUT THE REST Posted by WWVANDENHAMYAHOO.COM) WALTER VANDENHAM on June 05, 101 at 22:31:14: Inherited a 60 gallon tank and loaded it with 8 fish. All but one died. The survivor was a sailfin molley. I waited a couple weeks and the tank seemed okay and the fish seemed to have recovered by using in KISS method of water change and adding salt. Totally amazing. I then bout 4 potbelly molleys. Two weeks later there were 11 fry counted and now I only see six and their about 1/4 inch in length. I don't see any dead fry? Today, the only male (potbelly) was sitting still on the bottome of the tank gasping with it's mount and gills appeared to be going real fast. I worried and isolated him. He died in less than 30 minutes. Besides the gasping, the fast gills, and sitting still, he looked just fine (as do the other fish). Everyone else seems as active as normal and I added an addition 1/2 teaspoon of salt for each gallon (total of 1.5 tespoons per gallon)... I'm shocked my fish died, he looked fine yesterday. QUESTION: DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR? IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR? I am really concerned about my fish, especially the babies. Thanks in advance, Walter 9871

I was told that potbellies are extra sensative to new water when the two of mine died the same way as yours. I would wait a week or two and if no more fish die, get new ones two or three at a time. Pay attention to the Ph and temperature requirements and that kind of stuff when you do. I have a pot belly now who has been fine for a month. But they seem to be sensitive little fish. Male mollies do not have that back fin, they have a male-looking structure called a gonopodium. Congratulations on the birth of the babies. Being 16 babies, that must be her first birth, subsequent births will double in number the number of babies, mollies can have up to 200 babies. One of my breeding females had 126 babies 4 weeks ago. Your female will probably have another brood in 28-29 days, livebearers can have around 4 broods from just even one mating. Baby mollies can eat finely crushed flakes, and will eat very shortly after birth. I feed them crushed flakes and frozen daphnia, also starting at two weeks, other foods like crushed bloodworms, crushed plankton, etc. We breed mollies. I've never had an adult molly eat any babies, but did have 2 month old mollies attack and kill newborns one time. If the 2 parents and the babies are all that you have in the tank, all may be ok. If you are afraid of the babies being eaten, you could put the babies into one of those plastic breeder tanks and keep that in the same acquarium, until the babies are about 3-4 weeks old. Good luck! 9835

I recommend RidIch+ by Kordon, which is a medication that is already at 1/2 the dose of the standard anti-Ich medications, which contain malachite green and formalin, making it safer to use. We really need to know who lives in this tank, to advise you best as "sensitive" fish such as tetras should be given the first dose with caution and invertebrates and plants may die from this medication... so it's really important to know whom we are treating. Do not raise the temperature of your water at this point. Fay, what are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels) now? Also give as much info as possible about your set-up, such as the size of the tank, exactly who lives there and how big they are, how long the tank has been up and running, water temp, are your fish active and eating? and so on. Ich can be cured and can only be killed after it has left your fish (that is, when the white spots disappear), so we must get medication on board, to kill the little free-swimming parasites, which multiply once they leave your fish. I don't have first-hand experience treating a betta suffering from lead poisoning, but his symptoms certainly could be from that. If this is the case, remember that he was exposed to the lead for 2-3 months and any recovery that he will be going through will likely take a great deal of time. I would think that it will take him a long time to clear the lead from his body. I know of no medication for fish or other method to "cure" this. I will however search for info to see if I can come up with something to help him. Will he recover? I don't know, but I do know that bettas are hardy creatures and they don't give up easily. The other thing is that we should perhaps not be so narrowly focused that lead poisoning is definitiely the source of his problems. Bettas with a swimbladder problem can float on the surface on their sides, swimming really strange. This condition is most often from overfeeding and most often responds to a fast of a few days. For now, why don't you hold on feeding him for a couple days and see if he rights himself. Is he eating now? What, how much and how often are you usually feeding him? Describe in detail how he is floating, swimming, can he swim to the bottom? and so on. Keep him calm... make sure that he is in a quiet place and wrap a towel around his bowl, as this will darken things and make him more calm. That's all I can think of for now... Secondly, besides the molly being bloated, are the scales sticking out and away from the body? If so, these symptoms along with pop-eye lead to the diagnosis of dropsy. I would move this sick fish to a "hospital" tank and in doing so, if he has an infection, then you will be removing him from the others and any treatment that you wish to attempt can be carried out in the hospital. If your molly only has bulging eyes, then this most often is not contagious. For that matter, dropsy is typically not contagious. It is really a condition rather than a disease. Dropsy is the result of dysfunction of the internal organs (liver/kidneys) leading to a swollen abdomen and pop-eyes. It can be caused by a number of things, with a bacterial infection as one possibilty. Unfortunately, dropsy is inevitably fatal, but pop-eye by itself most often is not. Finally Jan, what are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels)? Barb (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm1) Help! 9825

Subject: Breeding Neon Tetras in Java Moss??? Posted by Jeff on June 04, 101 at 08:16:26: I read many articles about breeding Neon Tetras with tank full of Java Moss. Java Moss are suppose to protect the scattered eggs from their parents. But other articles also mention that bacteria that go along with the plants will kill off the eggs or mostly like induce fuguss. Anyone care to debate on this topic. Also did anyone succeed in breeding neons with tankfull of java moss. If so, what other special preparation the tank need for breeding neon? All helps would be greatly appreciated. 9817
