don't feel bad. i'm an inexperienced 24 year old. i have a lot of questions about this crazy baby black widow i have. please don't rely on my advice, as i'm also new at this... but i've been told that you shouldn't feed them more than once a day. in fact, one person told me she only fed her fish every other day! but yet, the directions on the fish food can says to feed them several times a day, no more than they can consume in five minutes. so, i really don't know which advice is correct. i guess if you overfeed them it causes toxic ammonia levels in the water. but like i said, i'm no expert on this subject. i hope that someone with more knowledge will respond to you. i know it's kind of heartbreaking when they all die like that. good luck!

Likely, they are dying as a result of ammonia poisoning. Please check out the article (http://www.aquamaniacs.net/cyclingsafely.html) Cycling Safely.

Sad to say, neons are very poor beginner fish. They are very sensitive to water chemistry and changes during the cycling period will kill them off quite quickly. Find a good beginner tropical fish that is hardy and can withstand the cycling, and these should do better.

But then I miss took the male beating the crap out of her as aggressive abusive behavior so I took her out. Now he won't make a nest. I don't know what is wrong!!! Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you misunderstood me. What i meant by action is that is moves by the bubbles from the air curtain. It is not hooked up to an air hose of any kind. The bubbles from the air curtain simply turn the ornament without any help from direct air tubing. Now do you know what i mean?

I know what you are talking about Josh, but don't readily know where to find them. I will look around for you to see if I can find someplace that carries them. You are talking about something like a water wheel that would be used at a mill and the water falling into it keeps it going, however, in the aquarium, it would be the bubbles from the curtain that create the current for it to move. I will let you know if I find anything.

Hi Adam. Not too many people seem to answer questions about Mollys here. I have 8 mollys in 2 10 gallon tanks. They don't need any help breeding...they are pretty self sufficient. They live very peacefully in the tank together. The only advice I have is that you should have 3 or 4 females per male.
It's pretty obvious when they are mating. The male fish has a tube-like fin by the anal fin...he pretty much drills the female with it. When fertilized, female mollys can have 3 or 4 batches of fry from just one mating. I have 3 females and one male in each of my tanks. I think it keeps the females from getting so stressed from all the mating! I think mollys are the easiest to breed, raise, and keep. I've heard from a lot of people that you shouldn't use a breeding net for the female to give birth, but out of 4 batches of babies, I only have 3 still living. Some die, and the others get eaten...so I am going to use the breeding net next time. You can't put the female in the breeding net for too long-she'll get stressed and possibly give birth prematurely. The way to tell she's ready is when she looks like she's gonna pop, and her belly is more of a square shape. Good luck with your mollys. If you do get more females, get a dalmatian molly or one of the pearls or golds...the cross breeding produces interesting results. It's most likely that pet-store black mollys aren't pure-bred...you'd have to get them from a breeder to have them pure black. I have one young black male who's starting to show some gold accents on his fins and getting some gold "freckles" on his "nose."
Good luck! If you need anything else, let me know!

How big is your tank? These fish are schooling fish, and should be in groups of at least 6 too keep everyone happy. The most likely reason why she killed the rest of the fish was due to overcrowding in a small tank.

Never keep schooling fish in anything under 20 gallons! Otherwise, they are cramped and there isn't any room to swim around in a school. Then they get agravated and aggressive.
For a 10 gallon, just stick to platies, guppies, bettas, kuhlie loaches, and dwarf frogs. Otherwise you are setting yourself up for disaster. (Note: this applys for beginners to the hobby)

I'm really sorry for your lose.:(I don't know if this is any help but if your fry are dying it may be from stress.Stress is sometimes cause if another fish dies, it is also caused by things like frequent changes in the enviroment such as alot of moving around or water temp. changes, if stress is severe, your fish will go into exhaustion, then go into shock & die.My fish just recently had alot of stress. They were being moved around alot from a breeder net to the tank, & I was moving evrything in the tank around alot, they were exhausted, so when I realize that, I left them alone, I didn't move them around or turn on the bubble curtain.Eventually they got better.I hope this helps in some way, I'm sorry for your lose.

I woke up yesterday morning to find that my pregnant molly had died and she looked fine. I had put her in a breeders net and I left her in there because she looked really pregnant for a long time. I was very upset and then I noticed my male molly had a super bad case of ich. I tried to treat it but I guess it was too late. I don't know how I missed it, prolly cause I was busy worrying over my pregnant one. Unfortunately both my mollys have passed now. I still have a betta and a guppy in my 10 gallon tank and they were acting fine yesterday. This morning when I woke up they seemed pretty sluggish. I dropped in a penicillin tablet last night (to treat the water) that said it would pretty much cure everything. The guys at the pet store said that that was what they use when they ever have a sick fish. Is there anything else I can do? Neither seem to have ich, they just look tired. Should I do massive water change? A little water change? And how long should I wait before trying to put any more fish in? I don't those 2 to get lonely.

The breeder net that you put the female in is what killed your molly. Those stress out fish, and cause more trouble than good. To stress out a pregnant fish is even worse, which can lead to the death of the fish and all of her unborn young. So from now on, don't use breeding nets.
Did you do a water change? Before you use any medication, you must do a water change, and take out the carbon from the filters. Otherwise you're wasting you time and money.
Okay now I see whats going on. Your fish are dying, and yet you want to know when you can add more fish???? Don't be a fish-haver, be a fish-KEEPER. Take care of the fish you already have, and don't think about adding anymore fish until your tank is healthy and running smoothly for at least 3 weeks.

I had no idea those breeder nets stressed them that much. The last two times she had fry they all got eaten by mom and dad before I could find them all. I'll know better next time. I just did a 30% water change and I'll think I'll let the filter run for a while and then start giving them the rest of the penicilin.
Well, thanks for your help. I'm still new at this so it's sad my little fishies have to suffer while I'm still trying to figure out how to keep them alive.

Hi Linda!
One thing that I will say to you at this point is that a sick betta doesn't eat, so he may be a little better off than it seems.
His problems seemed to have followed a water change. I would perform a 100% water change again now with clean, conditioned water with the thinking that something may have gone awry with the last change... forgot to add dechlorinator, etc. Sometimes things concerning our tap water are out of our control, like this is the time of year that water supply companies flush the pipes with chemicals, so who knows if some poison got into your water supply. Perhaps you are using bottled water. As you can see, I really don't know enough about how you are caring for your betta to comment at this time beyond the advice that you should perform a complete water change now to remove any possible poisons.
Keep him in a quiet place... no startling him and wrap a towel around his bowl... this darkens things and will keep him more calm.
There are a number of questions that I need you to answer in order for me to try to help you more. Please click here on... (http://pub36.ezboard.com/faquariumbbsfrm3) Bettas and post a message with the answers to the questions at the top of the forum. These answers often help me get to the heart of the problem. Also, comment on if he looks like he is having difficulty swimming downward in the water (that is, sinking in the water), if he has a swelling right behind his gills on the underside (looking like he swallowed a marble) and when floating at the surface, is he upright or laying on his side?
I'll look for your answers and let's see what we can do for him. BTW, what's his name?

First of all...take him out of that vase! Put him in a 2 gallon bowl at least. Once a week isn't enough to change a vase...should be done every 2 or 3 days with conditioned water using Novaqua and Amquel for ammonia. Also he shouldn't be kept in water that is to cold. 78 degrees is perfect. Darting could be from high ammonia or nitrites in the water..not a good sign.Is he breathing rapidly? This is a sign of illness. Take him out of the vase and give him some clean, warm, conditioned water and see if he improves. If he's eating that's good.

The color wont come back, but if you look at differnt foods you will see some of the foods that are color enhancers. Also in pet stores they use what is called a color light that enhance the color of the fish so when you get it in your tank you will notice that they dont look the same in the store. These lights are called beauty lights.

Just a general question...I'm using "aqua safe" which is supposed to keep the water pretty balanced for 6 months...So I just do a 20% change monthly. Is there anything besides the gravel cleaner that you can use to syphon water? It seems to upset the tank a lot--causing the water to cloud because the food and excrement is stirred up. Also, how much water treatment should you add when doing a 20% change?
I'm a newbie...so forgive my stupidity.

My other 10 gallon has 2 female dalmatian mollys (1 is lyretail), a female marble molly lyretail, and a male dalmatian sailfin.
One other question...RaNdOm!!! Any advice for bully fish? My male sailfin dalmatian seems to rule the tank...I had to get another female (which made 3 in that tank) so he'd have another one to pick on and leave the other 2 alone. My females seem to have the "not tonight, I have a headache" syndrome, though I realize they don't get "pleasure" from mating...so he chases them around--very rapidly-- until they submit. Poor fish. :(

Cherry Barbs are egglayers. She's pregnant, she might be full of eggs or has eaten really well. As far as the eggs and fry go. The eggs will most likely get eaten by the other fish. IF the eggs do survive the fry themselves may get eaten by the other fish. The best thing to do is to make sure there is lots of hidding places and cover for the fry and for the female to lay the eggs on. Good luck. Need any more help let us know. Rose

Subject: sick molly, please help :(
Posted by apathesiaaol.com) zabeth on May 24, 101 at 08:22:36:
This may run a bit long, and I apologize for that.
Peering into our aquarium on tuesday night, I found my usually active black molly shimmying in place at the bottom of the tank. Upon closer examination, I noticed she was covered in white spots. I *assumed* that it was ich and proceeded to medicate the tank before going to bed. When I checked her out on Wednesday morning, one of her eyes appeared to be twice its normal size and was covered in a cloudy film ((sac?)) -- almost like someone had covered it with glue.
Her other eye soon followed suit and I was thoroughly freaked out because I'd never heard of such a thing happening with ich. By the time night rolled around, her eyes seemed to be somewhat better -- then again, it's possible that I'd just grown accustomed to them. This morning, they're still cloudy and her tail seems somewhat droopy and her colour lacks the shine it once possessed, but the spots have disappeared.
I've been reading our books and surfing the web and not finding the answers that I need... so I've got a few questions for y'all :)
Is this ich? The white spots have me thinking yes, but the eyes have got me swinging. I know that poor water quality can mess up a fish's eyes ((and I know our water quality is less than ideal because my father did a 60% change *gasp!!* a week after i'd done a 25% change!)), but if it was the water, wouldn't the other fish be affected? Or would she be more likely to fall victim because she was already sick? I've heard adding table salt or aquarium salt to a tank works wonders on ill fish - which is better? And how much would I need for a 20 gallon tank? And will salt have any negative effects on gouramis, red tail sharks or dwarf frogs?
Any help is much appreciated. :)

Re: (9578.html) sick molly, please help :( posted by zabeth on May 24, 101 at 08:22:36:
Hi Zabeth!
I'd say that your molly has "Black Molly Disease", which is caused by a bacterial infection with Flexibacter. It is characterized by white patches (not "grains of salt" as in Ich) that sort of can have a fuzzy appearance to them as well as the fish exhibiting "shimmying" behavior. Describe the white spots that you are seeing in detail please. This infection requires treatment with an antibiotic, such as Maracyn (erythromycin) or plain tetracyline in the water and if you can find any Tetra brand anti-bacterial food (contains oxy-tetracycline), then feed this also. Treatment would best be carried out in a hospital tank, but if you can't get that together, you could treat the main tank.
BTW, what are your water parameters?
Mollies do best with salt in their water on a regular basis. Adding salt, however, will not cure what ails your mollie currently. Salt isn't so great for the ADFs :( When using salt, use aquarium salt. You will hear folks say that you shouldn't use table salt because it contains anti-caking agents as well as iodine and they are harmful, but this just isn't the most current thinking. I however, due to such peer pressure, use aquarium salt. :)
Even though the spots seem to be gone, if they did resemble what I have described then get quick with treating this molly as this condition can be deadly in a matter of days. Hmmm... though maybe she was able to fend it off by herself.
Check out my article on (http://www.aquamaniacs.net/popeye.html) popeye to get a more detailed glimpse of this eye-popping condition!
Let me know what happens!

Hi Barb and thanks for the response :)
The poor thing died shortly after I posted the original message. Two of my other mollies seem to be coming down with a weaker case of what she had :(
When I first noticed the white spots, they looked like grains of salt, which is why my original assumption was ich. They changed in appearance over the next day or so, but they were never fuzzy patches. They were greasy little bumps that resembled whitehead pimples, if you know what I mean.
Will run out in the morning to buy a hospital tank and the antibiotics, along with other fish neccessities. I can't give you the water parameters because ((and i should be dragged out into the street and flogged for this)) but I really don't know. The fish are actually my father's, and he's one of those people who consider fish "disposable pets" and though i've been nagging him to get the various test kits for the last 5 weeks, he hasn't. I'm currently unemployed, so i've had very little money to spend... or else i would have gone out and bought these things. but i'll do it tomorrow anyway because it's important and would probably go a long way to keeping the fish healthy and happy. and i'm rambling, and i probably sound like i'm a horrible fishkeeper making lame excuses :/
Anyhow, many many many thanks for all the help.

I'm into a lot of things, but flogging isn't one of them , so you're way safe! :-)
This Flexibacter infection is contagious and deadly, so I am dismayed to hear that two others have the same. As you saw with the first, he lost the "spots", yet died quickly. You need to treat the main tank with the antibiotic as I mentioned before. If funds are an issue, then get the antibiotic because without it, causalities are certain and unfortunately with it, you still may lose a significant number of fish. :( Keep your tank water temp at 75*F, because Flexibacter grows like gangbusters at a temp of 77*F and above.
Sometimes, there can be more than one disease process occuring at one time, so be on the look out for more "grains of salt", indicating Ich. Flexibacter will look like a white patch and I've not heard anyone describe it as looking like "pimples". Your mollis could have something else but Flexibacter infection is so common in Black Mollies that the layterm for this disease is Black Molly Disease.
Let me know how it goes!

I got the Maracyn this morning, and I'm probably being overly optimistic, but they seem to be feeling somewhat better today. They're eating again ((wouldn't touch the food at all yesterday)) and the larger one's actually been chasing my poor gouramis around the tank, hehe. I've heard it's usually a good sign when they go back to their normal behavior, so I'll keep my fingers crossed, continue with the Maracyn and see what happens. I don't know if this matters, but the two fish that are currently infected with what the other had *aren't* black mollies - one of them is what the pet store called "speckled" or "yucatan" - mostly grey with a few black splotches and the other one is a ghastly shade of pink.
Couldn't find the Tetra anti-bacterial food ((or any anti-bacterial food, for that matter)) and when I asked, I was told the local pet stores had stopped carrying it. I'll make a few phone calls in the morning, hopefully something turns up. I've managed to convince my dad to get all of the necessities ((hospital tank, water test kits, and things along that line. *big sigh of relief*)) as soon as i'm done making up a list.
75°F... eek! When the first one became sick, I was told I should raise the temp to 85° and leave it there until treatment was complete - only kept it up that high for around 6 hours before I realized she was looking a whole lot worse. Her condition improved a bit after I let it drop back down to the mid 70's, but by then it was too late. The higher temperatures only helped kill her faster and made it easier for the infection to spread :(
Thanks for all of the help, Barb. I'm really really really really really grateful for your responses and the information that you've given me :)

You are very welcome! :)
Don't search too hard for the anti-bacterial food because it was recently discontinued... I was hoping that you might have just gotten lucky and run into some.
Any type of fish can get this infection, it's just that mollies are more susceptible. Resumption of a normal appetite and activity are very very good signs. You are doing a great job!!
Ideally, water temp should only be adjusted 2*F per day up or down. Larger fluctuations are supposed to be stressful on fish making them more susceptible to infection.
The situation does sound brighter in your dad's tank... I'm guessin' that he's proud of you! :)

If you have chloramine you will test as though you
have ammonia and you need to buy a solution that specify
it treats chloramine, if not you'll kill your fishes.
Chloramine does not go away (evaporates) by letting
the water sit like ammonia does. HTH

Chloramines are chemicals added to city water, much the same way as chlorine, to make the water safe for drinking. Unless you have a test kit for this or call your water department, you won't know whether there is any in your water or not. (And don't trust the water department....they just know they add "chemicals" to make it safe for drinking.) If the Genesis product says nothing about removing chloramines, then it probably doesn't. And letting the water set will not remove the chloramines like it releases the chlorine. There are many products on the market to remove chlorines and chloramines, and you will need to read the bottles to see which ones do. Many of them are exactly the same with different product names. When it is added to the tank, the chloramines will be removed immediately. You won't have to change all the water. It needs to be used every time you do a water change or when adding water to your tank.
From the sound of your posting, I surmize that you have had problems with this tank in one way or another since setting it up (Correct me if I am wrong). The non-removal of the chloramines could be the problem. And I would almost place a bet that this is what has been happening.

Do you have Orandas? Some goldfish do have a wen or headgrowth. These growths can look quite lumpy and can get quite large, even covering the eyes and the gill plates in certain breeds. Although they can look a bit like cancer, they are harmless "ornaments", and they are found on many fancy goldfish breeds.

Aquarium salt won't do it. He needs Maracyn, an antibiotic. You must dose him according to the size of the bowl or tank you have him in. The package directions say one tab for 10 gallons of water so the tab has to be broken up.He gets treated for 5 days. Are you conditioning his water and using Amquel for ammonia? Overfeeding can also cause sickness.

I hate to dispute Kathleen, but I know what I am talking about. Antibiotics usually do more harm than good, especially in a bowl or small amount of water as overdosing usually occurs. Another point is that the Maracyn is NOT broad spectrum, and may not cure the particular infection or kill the "correct" bacteria that MAY be causing the problem. Use the salt like I suggested and see if I am not right. It will take about a week to see improvement. My wife keeps bettas (10 right now to be exact), and by keeping aquarium salt in the water at all times, she has no trouble with fin rot at all.

I have a sick beta. During his last tank cleaning, he may have brushed into some marbles at the bottom of the vase. He immediately stopped eating and developed a white stringy material on all his fins (except up top and his side swimmers). I went to pet store and they gave me Maracyn for treatment. I started it and within a day, all his fins broke away and his little feelers on the bottom broke off like 3/4 of the way. He looks sooo bad. Still won't eat. This morning, he lost most of his color on his fins. I am soooo worried. It was suggested that I give him a partial water change to get some of the decomposing material out of the water. So I used room temperature Spring Water. While I was taking out the water he acted like he was dying. He kept falling on his side and was actually belly up at one point. Is he going to be OK. I read on the first e-mail on the website that his fins will not grow in the same again. How come? Please give me any information you have on what is going on with George. I am at a loss.

You are giving Maracyn to treat cotton-wool disease, which looks like white fuzzy patches... is this what you saw on the lower fin (anal fin)? If not, tell me in more detail what you saw. Do try to keep him calm... wrap a towel around his bowl to darken things for him and place him in a quiet area... both will help to keep him more calm.

This little guy had tremendous sentelmental value. He did not have cottony patches. He had stringy white like mucus hanging from his anal fin and bottom fin. Was Maracyn not the appropriate treatment? I also may not have had the right type of plant in his bowl. But, he had been living in it for almost a year. Guess I will get a new beta, but I'm scared. When you first see the signs of a fungus( white fuzzy stuff) give him salt bath. 1/2 teaspoon salt to a quart of water. Watch him closely. Leave in only til fish looks distressed. I have saved a couple of fish this way. None of them have died from this treatment. Salt should be non-iodized. I also put a tiny pinch in their bowls. I have just under a gallon bowls and the fish are growing a lot and loving it. Better luck with your next fish.

Sandi... you didn't do it! He was sick and died from that... it was out of your hands. It is much better that they go quickly, than languish for weeks, while wasting away from a disease.
You've been a good betta mom if you've kept a betta happy and healthy in a quart sized bowl for a year. So, do get yourself another betta because you're good at caring for them. Get at least a one-gal bowl, if not larger, for the next one, as it is easier to keep the water conditions stable and good for your betta.

Hi Benson when you get a chance will you continue to help me? I would really like to start doing something. If I have to use antibiotics, I will have to do some driving. My fish dealer gave me 2 pills called Clout, he said this is the medication he uses? Have you ever heard of it.

Hey, Kid, I am right here. I work really crazy hours and I have to sleep and try to keep up at home with the family. Sorry. I did read the post from Barb, and I think since the water is okay, it may be the only choice you have. I can't think without seeing and examining the fish what could be the underlying problem. Clout is a very strong medication, and with the catfish and tetras you have in there, I don't think I would use it. If you do, only use at l/2 strength. The cories, of course, are not causing any stress in the tank, so my only other idea is that it is something contagious that came from the molly. I will warn you, however, that if all your fish are acting the same way, you may be too late to treat. I just can't think of anything you might try save the antibiotics at this time as you have basically tried everything else.
You won't see much of me on this board. Several of the posts I checked out didn't seem to be very polite. The poor person about the turtle post.....you can bet, he probably will never return.
Anyway, I will watch for your particular post until I see how things go with this tank. Sorry, that I am not too much help as I was certain it was a poisoning problem. I guess Barb probably has the answers you are looking for, so stick with her advise and see what happens.

Thank you Benson, I did a 5 gallon waterchange, cleaned the tank, took out carbon filter, and now treating with the antibiotic Furan-2. I could not get the Maracyn-2 and the Furan-2 works for Hemorrhagic Septicemia. I also noticed that the Genesis clorine remover does not remove cloramines so I wonder if this is the problem too. What forumns do you usually use? Thank you for all the time and thought you've put in to helping me with my problem, much appreciated.

Ah Ha! Since the Genesis does NOT remove chloramine, I would almost bet you have found your problem. This is very deadly to a fish. But at this point the Furan-2 won't hurt so you might as well give it a shot. I am dismayed that I could not come up with the exact problem. I am still rather doubting the septicemia, but won't contradict someone's ideas or plan of treatment unless I know for sure it is not correct. In your case, I cannot do that.
You are very welcome for the help, however, I don't feel that I did that much to recify your troubles.
I am not on any boards in particular and rarely write. I got to Petfish looking for something else on the net. Just thought I would give it a whirl on trying to help you. You have been very kind and patient, which is more than I can say for some folks here. IMO some of them are rather curt and a bit sarcastic. My reason for not getting too involved with the message boards. It was, however, nice talking to you, and I will check back for the next couple of days to see how things are going for you.

Hmmm... doesn't remove chloramines. My next question is does your water supply even contain chloramines? Kimme, you can call your local municipal water supplier and ask. How long has this tank been up and running? If it's been up with fish doing well for weeks to months, it would be hard to believe that all of a sudden they are dying from chloramine poisoning. Please clarify Kimme, if this tank was ever stable or if fish after fish has been dying in it... that will tell us a lot. I'm hoping that you are using AmQuel in meantime which does neutralize chloramines, to be on the safe side. I still would press on with antibiotic treatment. Do you know if this antibiotic that you chose harms the bio filter or not? It should say on the package. Still be sure to monitor your water parameters closely throughout treatment. Do not use Clout. It can kill sensitive fish and it is intended to treat flukes ("worms" on the outside of the body), which your fish don't have!
Again, good luck Kimme and I wish your fish well.

I have had problems throughout the 5 months I've had my tank. Can I add a product called Ammo Lock which eliminates clorine and chloramine, ammonia stress and detoxities ammonia produced by fish waste right in the tank with the fish? Ir says it works instantly and it also protects healthy gill function.
