See you there Kimme!
If the ammo-lock says that it neutralized chloramines, then add it now. It won't hurt to add it, until you find out if your water supply contains chloramines. I use AmQuel and NovAqua regularly as water conditioners. The AmQuel binds chloramines and ammonia. The NovAqua binds chlorine, heavy metals, adds a protective coating to the slime coat and actually adds sodium chloride (salt) to the tank, so no need for me to add any other salt.
Hang in there Kimme! You'll get this tank eventually straightened out and will enjoy happy and healthy fish!! :-)

iodine is negligible so you can use it. which is it? anyone have any advice for me??

There is no such thing as a mean fish. Mean is to do something out of spite. Fish do not have the mental cappacity to do this. Therefore a fish can and will not be "Mean". On the other hand if you mean aggressive then it's the black piranha, red bellied piranha, baracuda, and leastly the Oscar. However to raising these types of fish can be extremely difficult and you have to be dedicated to them. If you don't have years of experience in aquaria i wouldn't suggest you touch any of these fish with a ten foot pole.

It's not that i have to have neons it's just that i thought they'd make a pretty addition to the smaller malawi cichlids, but after reading some of the posts here i think that would probably be a bad idea the fish i am planning on getting are going to be between 2-3 inches in length. Maybe a 3 inch cichlid could cram a full grown neon into it's mouth, i doubt it but i don't like taking the chances of seeing a tailfin creeping out a cichlids mouth.

Malawi cichlids need a high pH (8-8.5) and very hard water; tetras like a more acidic pH. Have you considered keeping Kribs? They prefer a neutral pH and definitly won't eat your neons.

That sounds cool. Gouramis are peaceful, unless they are spawning, then you might need a seperate breeding tank.
If you have a big enough tank (50g+), you could add a small group of clown loaches, then you'd have fish at the top, mid, and bottom levels of your tank. If you have a smaller tank, maybe some cory catfish.
Just a few ideas. Try going to fishprofiles.com. It has info on lots of popular fish, and even gives a list of compatable species.

I advised you previously about which antibiotics to use and you opted to go with something else. Frankly, I am not sure that you really want advice from me in particular. In the event that you do want my opinion on your situation, your fish are likely succumbing to septicemia because as I recall you ruled out a water chemistry problem, you see no external signs of disease, your fish are dying rapidly and this problem is obviously contagious. The best antibiotic to treat septicemia is Kanacyn (kanamycin) and second best would be Maracyn-Two (minocycline). Follow the directions on the kanamycin package and I believe that the dose must be cut in 1/2 for sensitive fish such as tetras. Your fish still may not do well, due to the delay in starting antibiotics.
Sorry to hear of so many fishy deaths. :( I wish you and them much luck.

I did not mean to offend you. You give very good advice and I should have followed it. It's just mthat I live 4 hours away from any shops that carry Maracyn II and I wanted to get started with an antibiotic right away. Tetracycline was the only broad spectrium antibiotic I had. Also looking up the disease it said it was a blood disorder similar to meningitus and left red stricks on the infected fish and nothing about the way my fish were acting. I'm not quite sure about how to admininister the antibiotic and will follow the directions. I have to use it in m whole tank. When do I make water changes, should I take out charcoal and what about the pad that holds all the benifical bacteria. Will I lose all the good stuff in the tank? Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it and will follow it from now ob. Kimme

The trouble with septicemia is that you won't always see what is described in the books... red streaks, bloody spotches, etc. I'm hard pressed to come up with another diagnosis other than this as your fish are not dying from a water chem abnormality, like ammonia or nitrite poisoning, or from some other poisoning such as chlorine or chloramine poisoning. You are not seeing anything external and I would expect you to if there was a parasitic disease or cotton-wool disease (Flexibacter infection). That leaves me with something internal and contagious... so, I'd treat for septicemia. You are running out of options. I still believe the "spiraling" that you saw is a fairly common way that a distressed and dying fish moves. I don't think that this in itself leads to a particular diagnosis.
The Kanacyn is the better antibiotic for this condition though it's dose must get cut in 1/2 because you have "sensitive" fish in the tank. The Maracyn-Two (M2) would be ok too. The Tri sulfa that you mentioned probably would work too, but the tetracycline and Maracyn (erythromycin) aren't going to work very well. If you have the sulfa meds and no access to the others, go with the Tri-Sulfa then.
Follow the dosing directions on the package of the antibiotic that you use. The antibiotics go directly in your main tank. The Kana and M2 won't harm your bio filter, that is, the good guy bacteria. I don't know off the top of my head about the sulfa antibiotic... I suspect not, but it should say on the package insert if the drug is harmful to the bilogical filter (good guys). Also, if your fish are still eating, feeding an antibiotic food such as Romet-B would be helpful.
Remove the carbon (charcoal) during treatment... if you can remove the carbon and still leave whatever pads in, then leave them in. Perform a 25% water change with your conditioned tap water before starting treatment. Continue to monitor the water parameters (ammonia, nitrites and nitrates) daily, including pH and temp daily.
I think that answered most of it. If you need help with figuring out the dosage, etc. please ask.

Kimme, you do have problems. I don't hang out on the boards but happened to see your post searching for something else. If you can tell me how old this tank is, I might be able to help. What you have described is either overstocking of a new tank or you purchased sick fish and the disease has spread. I am thinking poisoning, but with more information, maybe we can get you straightened out. Antibiotics are a last resort, and about the only one I have ever had success with is Maracyn II. However, with the symptoms and deaths that you have described, I fear there will be no helping them at this point. I will add this message board to my favorites so I can check back to see if you want my help.

My tank is a 20 gallon one with a wisper 30 activated carbon filter. I appreciate your help in any way possible. Do I try antibiotics or just leave it alone and see. The tank is 5 months old I do regular cleaning once a week with about a 3 gallon water change. Add right amount of acquarium salt and make sure water has been setting out for 4 days. The PH is 71, no ammonia and no nitrites in it. Last week I did a 9 gallon water change with 2 gallons distilled water. I have 2 catfish, 7 neons, 2 mollies, 2 glowfish, 4 gupppies, and 2 red something tetras.

Sorry, I didn't get back with you sooner. I got called into work this afternoon and just arrived home. This is very puzzling that the tank is 5 months old, and you are having massvie fish problems. I am still leaning towards poisoning of some kind. How much salt are you using. You do realize that salt does not leave the water so you only want to replace what you have physically removed with a water change, ie, if you remove 5 gallons of water, you add only for the amount of water you have removed. If you are replacing evaporated water, you do not want to add any more salt. And catfish and neons are very senstive to salt so my thinking is less is better. Do you use any water conditioner? Even tho you let the water set for 4 days to remove chlorine, it will not remove the chloramines that may be in your tap water. And why the distilled water? Your water perimeters are within normal limits which is good. Up to this point have you added any antibiotics at all? And do you clean the substrate when doing a water change. Did this illness start upon the addition of a new fish? I hate all the questions, but I am trying to figure out what is going on in this tank and where we should begin. Are you sure that the fish are not fighting? I know catfish can sometimes be a little agressive toward smaller fish, and depending on the type can be way over-active and maybe stressing the others. Bear with me until we can maybe pinpoint the problem.

For each gallon of fresh water I use 1 drop of Genesis which removes clore and cloramines. I use the proper amount of salt usually a little less 3/4 tsp for every tree gallons removed. I'v not used any antibiotics at all. It may have started when I purchased a large Black Mollie about 3 months ago. She was the first to die. I thought it was swim bladder disease because her equalibrium became all screwed up eventually she became completely bent in half. I removed her from the tank and put her in a hospital tank treated her there with tetracycline. In the beginning I added fish way too soon and they all died rather quickly. I did this before the water could adjust at all. Really stupid but you learn from your mistakes. The catfish I've had from the beginning one just died yesterday. They are not aggressive they are peppered coryddoras. I was told to add 6 gallons of distilled water when I first had problems so I thought it wouldn't hurt to add a few gallons this last quarterly water change. I thououghly vacumn the bottom of the tank each week during weekly cleaning. And never change the pad in the filter only the activated charcoal filter bag about once a month. I hope this information helps. Thank you for your response. I've not started with any antibiotic as of yet and don't know where to start in treating the tank.

I keep losing fish one at a time. I have messages about sick fish on this message board now it's time to treat the whole tank. I have a 20 gallon tank with a wisper 30 carbon activated filter. My tank has 2 catfish, 7 neons, 2 mollies 4 gupppies, 2 glowfish and 2 red something tetras. What is the best method of treating the whole tank? The fish can die overnight with a spiralling motion or go to the bottom of the tank and breath hard. I have a 2 gallon hospital tank which I treated a female guppy with tetracycline after the five days of treatment she finally died, I had a molly which was completely bent in half over a week and put her to sleep, I had another molly which did the spiralling death thing and finally died after 2 days in the hospital now my catfish was upside down 2 days ago I uprighted her and she was only able to live for 2 days after that and I had to put her to sleep too. Please Help.

For 20G tank you seem to have TOO many fishes.
Please check the water condition (NH3), the mode of dying of your fish sounds like stress and not infection. Hence treating with antibiotics won't help.

Hi Jenn!
Tell me about the size of his home and how much and how often you are changing the water. Also please describe in vivid detail what you are seeing... does it look like a clump of something growing on the jaw? How long has he had it? Is he eating normally? How old is he? Is the swelling where the gill cover is? Is the gill cover sticking out instead of laying flat? How long have you had this betta?

Thankyou for answering!! No one has as of yet. To answer questions:
1-10 gallon tank with whisper junior filter, and h20 changes every other week or sooner if water gets grose.
2- looks like a bump or a zit. It's red w/no cotten like substance. in middle of jaw. doesnot seem to be growing.
3- looks like a swollen blister and looks solid
4-he's had it for two or three days now
5-he's eating like a horse as usual (not over feeding him if anything lack of) very happy bubble nest and all. other fish are healthy and he's playing with them. he reconises me and interacts back. swims around alot like normal. all in all he's behaving and eating normally. even get fisty with his refelction.
6- if gill cover is the apron that sticks out when they are angry then, his right side is normal but the left side can't seem to extend out all the way. he is chewing with out a problem and acts like he's talking to me. This is why it is so hard it is like he's asking for me to fix him.
7- i have had him for 7 months now and i got him slightly smaller than full grown cause he grew alittle and got chubby. body all looks very good. pretty color red and he even shows of from time to time. like i said he has a personality and i love him dearly for it. he's not mad or "sick" as far as i can tell cause when he is he''l swimm away from me .
Thanks for all you can do. No one really knows what i am talking about. it is so weird looking. Looks like he did a few round of boxing and lost.

Hi Jenn!
Whew! If ya' know what I mean about the rudeness thing... too bad folks need to interefere. :(
The "bump" could be from...
*An injury with a bacterial infection brewing there (like a zit).
*Early "mouth fungus", which is caused by a bacteria, called Flexibacter and not really a fungus and it doesn't only occur on the mouth but can be on the "apron" and really anywhere on the body. Most often this will look like a fuzzy patch, but I've seen pictures with it looking like an overgrown mass.
*Red-sore disease, which is a condition causing red sores from a combo of a parasitic and bacterial (Aeromonas) infection.
*If the gill cover starts to worsten and gets "eaten away", this would be gill rot. I suspect that he can't move his gill cover normally, purely due to the swelling of it.
So you see, this is all very complicated, as these conditions are all treated differently. What I would do is treat with an antibiotic such as Kanacyn or Maracyn-Two first and see how things go. Anyone else in the tank with him? We may need to move to plain Maracyn treatment if it begins looking more obviously like "mouth fungus".
Sorry that I can't give you the definitive answer on this one, so I think that treatment with the antibiotic and a close eye on his condition is a good first step, which will guide us as to what to do next.
I shall disregard any bizarre posts under your name and likewise do the same for me.
Let me know how he does, especially in regards to activity, appetite, bubblenesting and the like.

Hmmm... Losing scales is most often due to trauma (sometimes we don't know what happens after lights go out in the tank) and I've read rarely to fish TB. Nothing else comes to my mind off hand.
One caution... your bala will eventually make a snack out of your betta. :(

It could be from fin rot (is the tail being "eaten away"?), septicemia (bacterial infection) or trauma. Probably would be prudent to treat with an antibiotic such as Kanacyn (kanamycin) or Maracyn-Two (minocycline) in a seperate "hospital" tank, unless the bloody spot has cleared by now. Any bullying going on in that tank?

My guppy died today.....his health decreased so fast. It seems like his tail disappeared within a day. I don't know what happened, all the other fishes are doing fine.
And yes, I did notice my neon nipping at my helpless guppy so I took the guppy out. The neon is the one that usually get's picked on.
This morning I noticed the guppy wasn't able to swim without flipping over. His tail seemed to be sinking, then he began to turn black. He then died this afternoon. Does anyone know what went wrong here? I get so attached to my fish, I don't want to lose another.

Sorry Janine :(
It sounds like the bloody tail, which got quickly "eaten away", was a rapidly ascending form of tail rot and then this bacterial infection spread to the body (septicemia). When it spreads this fast, there really wasn't much that you could have done for the little guy. Watch the others... if you get a second case, the tank needs to be treated with antibiotics. Be sure to perform your regular partial water changes and keep the water chemistry and conditions ideal.

Well it happened again today. Another guppy died and 2 more, in different tanks, looks as if they're not going to make it through the night.
I did start the other 2 guppies on antibiotic (TetraMedica: Contra Spot). They're just laying at the bottom of the tank, on it's side. Once in awhile they will try to swim but ends up flipping over and crashing to the bottom. At least they are still alive:) Hopefully they will get better over the night.
I still don't know what brought on this sudden outbreaks. Maybe something in the air or water? It's weird because the guppies was in different tanks and the other fish that was with the deceased fish are fine.
Thanks,

You've got big problems on your hands. :( More than one infected fish means that this is way contagious. Different tanks can get cross-contaminated by using the same net or gravel vac or whatever in both.
I don't know what the Contra-Spot med is... sounds like it is for Ich and that's not your problem. What's in it? You need a med to treat septicemia, preferably Kanacyn (kanamycin) or Maracyn-Two (minocycline). Did you notice the same red bloody tail or any bloodly splotches or red streaks anywhere on their bodies or fins? Get moving with the treatment, as these infections can spread like wildfire, wiping out the entire tank.

With mollies, their belly will get so big you may find yourself saying, "she looks like she's going to pop," which at that point it seems to be about 6-8 more days until birth. Under decent water and good feeding conditions, a molly will have babies every 28-29 days. So you can figure it will be less than that. My 3 females seem to have babies every 29 days to the tee, I mark this on the calendar and then watch her for this: About 16-24 hours before birth, her birth opening looks enlarged, whitish, and soft - ready to give birth. I do not know if the opening looks this way with a molly who is having a brood for the first time. I have never had any parent mollies (male or female) eat the fry - but have had 2 month-old mollies "horribly attack and kill" new fry. There is breeding grass (expensive), or even a group of plants together will give the fry a place to hide in case she has them before you get her into a breeding net. After she has the babies, I let her rest in the breeding tank about two more hours, and feed her, then return her to the main tank. I feed fry frozen daphnia and very finely crushed flake food, and keep them in the breeder for 3-4 days, then move them to their own tank. If you don't have a separate tank for just the babies, then you could keep them in the breeder for a couple weeks. They grow very fast the first couple weeks. Also, mollies can have several broods from just one mating, so even if you have no male in the tank, she may have babies again in about 4 weeks.

When changing your filter media, keep in mind that you only want to change 70% of it as to keep the beneficial bacteria present in the filter. You can make filters out of sponges found at most any grocery or hardware stores. The carbon envelope sounds like a good idea but try to re-use some of the old carbon every time.

What do you feed young fries? There only safe haven is my filter, then I remove and put in a
small container. The other fish which are Black mollies eat them. Any ideas for me to save them?
Thanks. bpJohnson
