Deb, what kind did you borrow. I don't want a high festation than I have right now, and am not real well versed on snails. Would these be an option. Going to LPS tomorrow while "skool"...hehe...shopping, and I can maybe get some of the right kind to try if you guys let me know No. l: what kind....No. 2: if they will work. Kick

Subject: black lyretail mollies dying off
Posted by (sserpankdsi.net) SS on August 14, 100 at 09:15:21:
I have had several black lyretail mollies from a smaller tank so, I chose to get a 29 gallon tank. I do have a community tank not more than 25 fish. I started off with about 25 black lyretail mollies alone but, over the course of the last month I have lost over half. They become dormant. Seem to not move about very much. Later they start to tilt when they do swim. In the later stages they just violently swim in circles and later die. I have treated bacterial diseases. I have used salt. I do frequent water quality checks--PH, Ammonia and Nitrite. All check at ideal levels. The ailment seems to only attack my mollies though I have lost a couple other fish during this period. What am I missing?? Is there a disease that affects mollies the most? Frustrated!!

I am a bit confused concerning your tanks here, so you will need to clarify a little. Did you add 25 mollies all at once to a new tank or move them from another tank? And where does this community tank fit it? Right off the bat, I will say it is an overstocking problem and they were added too fast to the tank. Could be mollie disease, which there is basically no cure for. Give us a little more information, and maybe we can be of more help. Kick

Re: (5543.html) Re: black lyretail mollies dying off posted by Kick on August 14, 100 at 15:50:55:
No, I started off with a ten gallon tank and soon had an overcrowding problem as two of my mollies had children. This was over the course of about three months. Out of those babies approximately eight survived to begin adolesence (one inch long). We had a goldfish that really liked them. We have gotten rid of the goldfish. We later had a third batch of babies (last count mama had 20+). It was soon after that I purchased a slightly bigger tank (29 gallons). I used the tank water from the ten gallon to help start up in the bigger tank. This went well and the fish began to grow. Our tank consists of two leopard catfish, four tetra neons, two platys, three zebra danios, one dalmation female, four tiger barbs, two painted glassfish and ten black mollies. Four of the black mollies are adult size the remainder are juveniles. I hope this helps. Thanks for responding.

Re: (5562.html) Re: black lyretail mollies dying off posted by ss on August 15, 100 at 09:51:54:
My first thought is that the main problem is overcrowding. Is there any way you can start the l0 back up and put the mollies and fry in there? Even tho your water quality appears to be fine, it may be such a thing as there is not enough aeration in the tank for this many fish, and they are being oxygen deprived. But also, mollies are susceptible to what is called black molly disease and since these guys are black, that could very well by your problem. Sorry to say, there is no cure for this that I know of. Another thing, which there are pros and cons to this, is that egglayers and livebearers do not do well together. Some folks get along great with this mix, while others don't. But I will still tend to lean toward the overstocking/black molly disease in this case. Kick

Kick, if I am not mistaken, this is the same stuff that I have at home that says to use as a preventative (to keep fish from getting ick), use 12 drops (per a certain amount of gallons) once a week. I have not done this, but have added it a few times. My snail (yellow) recently died. Could this have something to do with it? The directions did not say anything about it not being safe for snails. I also use aquarium salt. And I noticed that my platies picked on the little fella a lot. Before I buy another one, I would like to know if I have put him in a "not so ideal" environment. Any advice from anyone (especially you snail lovers) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, cd

Well, I adore snails. ;) They're just as cute as puffers (how ironic!). I'm not familiar with Aquari-Sol, but if it contains copper, it is responsible for your snail's death. :( If you want another, do get a snail. :) Feed them with cuttle bone and cucumber and you can't go wrong. Remeber snails need gallonage to themselves just like a fish does! http://www.dds.nl/~snc/ is a great apple snail website if you care to visit. kitty fish

The aquari-sol does, indeed, contain copper and as Kitty Fish said, that is probably the reason the snail died. It is a very good cure for ick, but upon the advise of others more quailified than me, I do not use as a preventative. The reason being with continued use, the ick could become resistent to the medication and it would not work when it was definitely needed. That said, the only time I use "any" medications is when it is warranted. Sorry about your little snail, but I hope this clears up the Aquari-sol question. Kick

Is possible that they may have dropsy which is a bacterial disease and antibiotics are needed. Or could it be that these fish are constipated. In that case a swim in some epsom salt water ususally works. Are the scales sticking out making the fish look like a golf ball. If so, then probably definitely dropsy and treatment is needed ASAP. It could possibly be stress, but when red "streaks" are seen in the fins, this is a sign of septicemia. Are you sure no other fish are biting at him? I would quickly get some Maracyn II and treat the whole tank. If this should be septicemia, it is caused by a bacteria or TB and can be deadly to your fish. Kick

Septicemia is an internal bacterial infection caused by bad water quality. Personally, I HATE Maracyn-Two. It has never worked as promised for me. I know of a few other fishkeepers who've been dissatisfied with the medicine, as well. I would say your best bet now is to feed the fish an anti-bacterial food. Tetra may work, if it's the only thing available, but do look around! You could possibly treat food with anti-biotics from a vet, but I can't instruct you any further than that. Good luck. kitty fish

Hi! We just got a new betta a few days ago. He is in a 5 gallon tank alone. I put the Copper Safe in before I put the fish in, thinking that would keep him from getting it. We have a small filter with carbon chips in it, & I forgot about removing those, thinking they were a good thing. I have just noticed the spots today. I added 2 little drops more of the coppersafe, I didn't want to add too much since I put the proper amount a couple days ago. If the fish has ick (which I think he does), are we going to lose him or is there hope? I was reading this board & saw something about adding salt. I don't have any aquarium salt. Can I add regular or wait until tomorrow & go buy some aquarium salt? Please help if you can, we don't want the fishy to die. Thanks! Tracie

Re: (5507.html) I think my betta has ick posted by Tracie on August 13, 100 at 15:49:07:
The ick will probably not kill your fish, just make him somewhat uncomfortable. Aquarium salt is very good to treat bettas (and other fish as well) but it should be aquarium salt. Do not use regular table salt. He will be okay until tomorrow when you can get the proper salt. If he is in a tank with heater, you need to raise the temp to about 85 and use the coppersafe according to the directions. With aquari-sol, you add it every day until the ick is gone. Since you have had this fish only a few days and he acquired ick so soon, I am wondering why. If the tank was a new setup with fresh water, etc. he must have been harboring this parasite somehow from the LPS. Use the copper safe along with the salt, and you should see some improvement. Salt is used at the amount of l teaspoon per gallon, however, remember with plants, filters, decorations, etc., you probably don't have a full 5 gallons of water in the tank. Kick

Sometimes fish just die and to us there is no reason. I had a pair of gouramis about a year ago. Had had them for quite a while. One day, one was dead. No visible cause. And then 3 days later, the other one died. Same scenario. I don't know if there was disease going on or if the other died from grief of the first one being missing. Often times they come from the LFS underfed and are then taken home to a tank that has nothing for them to eat. That is, we have no algae for them to eat if our tanks are just getting started. The thing to do is buy them at the first sign of brown algae (actually diatoms). They'll devour this stuff quickly but will be very happy. From then on drop in some small bits of sinking spiralina tabs for them to eat when their bellies look small. Some folks drop in lettuce or other veggies for them to eat, my experience is that this promotes outbreaks of nematodes (These are the little worms that swim around in an "S" pattern). The stocking rate for Otos is 1 Oto per 10 gallons of water. Just remember that a big-bellied Oto is a happy and healthy Oto. CT

How long has the tank been up and running? The concern when nitrates are at zero is whether or not a tank has cycled. Nitrates should be around 5 to 10ppm for a healthy established tank. You may need to spread out your water changes a little to obtain these numbers. With zero nitrates, lots of algae and mysterious deaths -- all fingers point to water quality. Excess algae can also cause oxygen levels to drop and CO2 levels to rise. * Any signs of fish gasping at the surface? * Are you careful not to overfeed? Don't add anymore fish until you get a handle on your water quality issues. Keep us posted. CT

I was considering getting two of these for my 20 gallon tank. My smaller tank, which has been setup longer, has just started showing signs of some brownish algae. But all the algae is at the top of the tank. Will Otos travel up the sides of the tank to eat this? The ones in the LFS were all at the bottom of the tank, kind of huddled together. Thanks!

My Otos nibble the algae on the glass but don't do spotless cleanup. I usually use a magnet type cleaner on the front glass. CT

Rose is absolutely correct. You should only have l of these per tank. I am very surprised at your LPS for selling them all to you. But there again, some LPS's don't care as long as they are making money. Take all but one back to the LPS and "tell" them what we have told you. It may help someone else out in the future. Another clue here....you should not add 5 fish of this size to your tank all at once. Depending on how long you have had it up and running, you probably created a bio overload and the fish are being poisoned along with not getting along well with each other. Kick

Your first mistake was putting 5 in together. These fish are not tolerent of their own species. Solution is to take all but 1 back to your LFS. All your sharks will have the same fate as the first two given time. I don't think it will be long either. Sorry to tell you this. I hope this will help with some of your tank troubles. Good luck. Kojo I think the reason why you have sharks minus fins is because the others have bit them off and they are so stressed they are dying. It could be fin rot although I highly doubt this. If you absolutly could not live with only 1 of these sharks (I'm not sure if this will work or not) you could put the injured shark in a hospital tank. When he's all better then you do a water change (a small one, 10 at most) and rearange your tank. By rearange I mean put plants from one side and put them on the other side of the tank. Take out any rocks in there now and put new ones in or take a couple of the rocks out and rearange the rest of the rocks in the tank. The whole idea is to make the tank look like it's not now. Why do you want to do this simple, It will confuze your fish and none of the fish will fel like it's their territory and all fish in the tank will have to find new territories. Make sure you have enough hidding places for your sharks and what ever else you have in there. Good luck. Rose

Gladly, my fish are doing much better! The nitrites are high right now, but they look a lot healthier than they did! I think we're almost there! Thanks for all your help! Rikki

Glad to hear things are going better for you. I want to apologize for being a little short with you earlier. I know what a stress these fish can be sometimes to folks, and I guess I just jumped in a mouthed off when I shouldn't have. But just remember, there will be folks here at one time or another to help you out. Let us know if we can help you further and good luck with your tank. Kick
