Comments: I was surprised by this new store in the Cloverly neighborhood of Silver Spring. The staff was knowledgable and eager to help with my aquarium algae problems. I thought it would be complicated but they were able to boil it down to a couple simple corrections. Their huge selection of fish makes me want to get another aquarium. Plus, I can see a lot of different options from their show room.
Scales is still adding to the store but this is already my favorite in Maryland!
Comment : I dislike SCALES TROPICAL FISH WAREHOUSE store and their customer service. I purchased 5 Discus fish, which I thought were Brilliant Turquoise. I grew the fish up to adulthood and later found out at least 4 of the fish were of a different variety. I was heart broken when I found this out. I kept waiting for the brown bands to show, but they never did.
For those of you who are not Discus experts, you cannot confirm the variety of the fish, when they are juveniles. You depend on the Seller to be truthful and accurate when the fish are young. It's like buying a plant. You won't know if the red tulips you planted in the fall will be red until the spring - Only to be surprised that the tulips are yellow.
I contacted the seller, who was very rude. He tried to blame it on me. paraphrasing - "How do I know, if you bought that fish from me" I however, have a copy of the receipts, that say "Discus Brilliant". Then the seller tried to blame it on the supplier. But in my opinion, once the fish is in the store it is their responsibility. It is their responsibility to get the labeling right. And if it turns out wrong, they need to make it up to their customers
In my opinion, any reputable store would have offered an apology and some store credit with proof of receipt.
Before you think I am complaining too much. Think how upset you would be if you spent hundreds of dollars and much time growing them up (think 3-5 times a day feeding and daily water changes) only to find out they were the wrong variety.
They did not offer an apology or store credit. Instead all I got was excuses. This was my bad experience with SCALES TROPICAL FISH WAREHOUSE.
Comment : A good overall fish shop. The newest in the area with a pretty good staff. It is also one of the larger ones around.
They quarentine their fish before sale, which is rare in the DC area shops. It shows as on the whole, they have very healthy stock.
Comment : Well I loved the place they are very helpful and it is a great setup. But they were selling sick discus which cause me a 300.00 loss in fish. I asked about the gill plate and he said it was normal. Unfortunately I didn't know better at that time. It was a parasitic infection which killed the 75.00 discus I bought from him and took out every single other discus I had in my tank. He also had black discus out in the tanks for sale. And black is a sign of distress/sickness. They also directed me into using products I didn't need on my tank. And said go ahead use this wait 24 hours it's cycled. And it wasn't and I lost more fish. I might sound like an idiot I don't know I just figured the owner Andrew would know what he's talking about.
