Compact submersible internal filter
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:29:35 AM »
Good morning, so i have a question regarding internal filters. I'm starting a 5g crayfish tank and intend to have an internal filter due to space and noise constraints. Browsing around, it seems the choices are very limited these days.

There's the Whisper Internal series which is what I currently have and find it rather noisy due to the waterfall effect. I also have a Fluval 1 original that is missing the impeller shaft (if I could get that fixed, I wouldn't mind using that).

Other than Fluval being in its third internal iteration, the Eheim Aquaball, and the few brands that I haven't heard of before, are there any other choices? Back in the 90's I had a Aquarium Systems Duetto DJ-50 that I really liked. According to Marineland's website, it still exists but good luck finding one. I liked it for the fact that it was internal, had a 360 degree adustable output and it was very slim. If anyone has any alternatives, I'm all ears.

Thank you.

All my aquariums including planted ones, are fitted with my Strip Under Gravel filter. I never need any other filter system.
If I had to live my life again, what would I avoid?

I use the Hagan Elite mini filter in my small tanks - I've been using them for years and love them.  They are rated for 3g, but I use them in 5g lightly stocked tanks with no problem (betta tanks).

Here is a link - I have been able to find them locally at Petco as well:

Thanks for the advice. I went to PetSmart yesterday looking at the selection they offered and it seems the only one they had that was even close to suitable was the Fluval Internal U1 and they wanted $35 for it. They also had refill cartridges for the Tom's internal filter but didn't have the actual filter in stock.

I actually managed to find myself a Duetto Mini online and ordered it, not bad for $15. We'll see if its like I remember it.
