the new 55g is about to meet my .22 Woodsman ...
« on: April 29, 2012, 09:18:35 PM »
Bought the tank from craigslist for $40 ... found out it had ammonia residue.

Dumped the thing, scrubbed it with vinegar water and rinsed it with HOT water. Got new rock. Rinsed it handful by handful in HOT water. Set up the filter, placed the rock in, filled it up bucket by bucket and added a conditioner to specifications. Decided to leave it empty all weekend and let the water cycle through before adding fish next week.

Now the water is cloudy, to the point I can't see the intake tube for the filter.

I have NEVER had this much problem with a tank in 15 years! Its to the point I'm so frustrated on being stumped and trying new routes, I can't finish sentances when I try to exlain to Eric what could be wrong.

Seeing as I need a new testing kit, we're running a sample into Petco tomorrow to see where the levels are at. The filter should be doing the jon, its for a 65g tank ffs ... I don't know mayne that's too much and its flowing to muc volume through for any good levels to establish??

Someone, anyone with ideas please tell me ... otherwise this tanks going to the Hole for practice shooting .....

Was there a food source of some kind put in the water? Maybe it's started cycling and it's a bacterial bloom. Test it and see if you have any ammonia. If you do, it's not from the tank. You've washed it out well and are using conditioned water. Wait it out. Feed the tank and start a cycle. Monitor it. See if the ammonia goes down and you start getting nitrites. Wait until it's done cycling before adding fish. If you didn't finish cycling it, that might be what killed your other fish. Feed it every day until you get zero ammonia and nitrites. This could take a few weeks.

I can't think of anything helpful to add, I think LittlePuff has some good advice, but it's nice to see you back.

Cloudy water is fairly common in a cycling or newly cycled tank.  It should clear up on it's own eventually.
