Anybody got any good eel tips?
« on: April 07, 2012, 01:42:26 AM »
I'm keeping a tire track and two small peacocks. I have read that they will only get about 8 inches, which would mean that my tire trck will not grow anymore, but i have seen some pretty large fire eels that are related to the ones I'm keeping. Are there any good tips out there that I won't find on info sheets?

You'll probably have to expirament a bit food-wise. Frozen bloodworms are good under a foot, they generally will eat any soft bodied worms. A full grown or close to full grown fire eel will eat whole night crawlers. My first peacock was an avid snail exterminator. Hit-or-miss there though, I haven't had any other spiny eels with that particular taste. They might eat one or two, but he decimated the population that supplied my yoyos with treats.

thanks, you know, I have fed them left over night crawlers from fishing trips, and it just rained here, so I'm thinking tomorrow is a good day to stock up on earthworms. they do like the bloodworks, but the tiretrack is bigger than the peacocks, and he gets first dibs. I think if i make little earthworm pieces, I might have better luck with the finicky peacocks. I have had them for some time now, but they are still small. I guess cuz theyre shyer than the tiretrack....

I have yet to find a tropical predator big enough to eat earthworms that didn't adore them. My oscar flips out when he sees me with the worm container.

Err, tiretrack eels will grow to about 24", and when they get bigger they lose the nice pattern and become a plain, muddy brown.

I should have caught that. I haven't kept many spiny eels. I do know that peacocks can get at least 12" because that's how big mine was when the heater stuck on and killed everybody in the tank.
