When was the last time you really hosed your computer?
« on: March 25, 2012, 11:51:25 AM »
Being geeky, I have a few running computers, but only one that's fairly "modern".* Which I hosed last Tuesday trying to shrink a partition so that I could add Windows 7 Ultimate for a dual boot. Everything was backed up two days prior, so I didn't lose too much, but still, it required reloading the OS completely.

*The one I'm on right now is one of the older ones that I'm updating, increasing RAM and upgrading the video card. It could run Windows 7 at any level right now, but I want it to howl as loud as it's capable, I can put another gig of RAM and put a much better video card in it. It's 6 years old, but it was a high end motherboard when I got it, even if it's only 32 bit.

I've hosed a hard drive, motherboard, 2 sticks of RAM, a vid card & 2 sound cards. But never all at the same time.

Luckily the hard drive wasn't the boot drive but I still lost of valuable info.

Ever notice in the Bible, whenever God needed to punish someone, make an example or needed a killing, he sent an angel? Ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? An existence spent praising your God, but always with 1 wing dipped in blood. Would you really want to see an angel?

Try a power supply failure, they tend to take as much with them as they can. That happened back when I only had one functioning computer, making me absolutely computerless the same day I got laid off. 2002 sucked.

A few years back, I was installing Linux on the second harddrive on my desktop computer. I was successfull... except I realized afterwards that I accidentally installed it on the primary harddrive, rather than the secondary harddrive, which effectively erased Windows.

I guarantee I won't have that exact same problem anymore... I've since (purposefully) removed Windows from that computer, and I only have Linux installed.

I was trying to shrink a Linux partition when I hosed things this time. I'm working on Microsoft certs now though. Vista pushed me over to Linux, it really annoyed me. 7 has some neat features though, and has remedied most of what annoyed me about Vista. As an administrator, I really like Applocker and Bitlocker.

Now I can really hose things. I have a two processor Xeon dual-core 1U server that I finally got Windows Server 2008 R2 loaded on(it doesn't have an optical drive and was being problematic for alternate loading methods)
