What do I need to do when I'm away?
« on: May 24, 2011, 02:04:22 PM »
Hi all,

I'm going away shortly for a week. I've got a 90 litre tank with just 2 plecos and an angel fish. What should I do about feeding while I'm away?

Also, I have a problem with my light unit. Every time you turn it on you have to fiddle with the fitting to get it turned on. Therefore I can't use a timer to turn it on as there'll be no one to fiddle with it - no smut please :o) . Am I ok leaving the light off for a week? The room is quite well lit.

A week is no problem for fish that have been fed regularly, they should be able to go two weeks without feeding. Just do a water change and vacuuming the day you leave or the day before to make sure their water stays good while you're gone. Weekend or vacation feeder blocks foul the water more often than not, as do non-fish keeping friends who tend to over feed.
Unless you have live plants, the light is more for our benefit, the fish couldn't care less. Leave it off, a light with a switch like that is a fire hazard, but only when it's left in the "on" position.

Nice to see you posting again!

I fast mine one day a week just to help prevent bloat. It's not like they get to eat regularly in the wild. Most people tend to over feed.

I feed my fish sporadically - some times it's each day then I may go 2 days without feeding them.
