Breeding bettas is a lot of work and you need to do a good deal of investment to make sure you have all the necessary supplies. Breeding tank, tanks for the parents, nutritious food for the parents and fry, medications to keep on hand, cleaning supplies, grow out tank, containers to separate male fry, etc etc. There are so many things I bought before I gave breeding a try.

All I can say is continue researching before you give it a try! Having everything you need beforehand is so beneficial.

I initially fed my fry boiled egg yolk, microworms, and frozen baby brine shrimp. I plan on breeding bettas again within the next year and this time around I'll be trying live bbs (had troubles hatching before).

As for your second question, I don't quite understand what you're asking.

I'm going to divide my aquarium before I put the famale in, and take a cup of water from the female's side and pour it in the male's side(because the female releases a horomone(at least that's what I've heard)into the water to let the male she's ready).

I kept my female that I intended to breed separated in a 1/2 gallon fish bowl that I had inside my spawning tank. Some people use glass chimneys, jars, dividers, etc., so you have quite a few options that you can look into.

Research, research, research. I don't think I can stress that enough. There is so much that you can learn about breeding. Check out the articles on here and Ultimatebettas.com. There's plenty of good information on here and UB, but UB has a lot of Betta breeders that you could talk to also.

What size tank do you plan on spawning in? Do you have a submersible heater for the tank? Do you have plants to use as cover for the tank? Will you have tanks to keep the parents separate? Do you have nutritious food to condition the parents? Do you have all the cleaning supplies you'll need to keep the water quality pristine? Do you have a larger tank or container to use as a grow out for the fry? Do you have containers to keep the fry in when they need to be separated? Do you have the time to take care of all the fish? Do you have the space for possibly hundreds of fry? What do you plan to do with all the fish? Use these questions as a mental checklist for yourself before you decide to take the plunge. (I'm not really expecting you to answer these. ;))

There's a lot more to breeding Bettas than just putting a pair into the same tank and hoping for the best. I had a pair that were in the tank for 2 weeks before they spawned (Disclaimer: I took the risk to keep these two in the same tank for that long. Either of the fish could have been seriously injured or killed from being put together. I kept a close eye on them, but it could have ended differently and I could have lost them.). I had a male that tried to kill his female on their first attempt, so they had to be separated. On another try they attempted to spawn and it never resulted in any eggs. You have to be very patient and realize that many things can go wrong.

I understand(I hope I do) that patience is required. I intend to get neat colors and if possible, maybe sell some fry. I would like to get store credit, but I'm afraid they won't make my hard work worth it and fail to care for the fish. I don't have a heater, but I realize that I need one and it makes me a little angry when people don't use them for their poor betta. I don't have all the equipment needed, in fact, I don't even have water in my aquarium. I WILL get the proper equipment before even trying to breed, and I have tropical fish flakes, pellets I intend to get brine shrimp, live and or freeze-dried, etc. I research as much as possible before getting fish, and I need mor aquariums. It might take two years before get bettas, so I have a lot of planning time. I will provide PLENTY of hiding places with live plants. I'm doing research on plants this week.(Iknow you didn't expect me to answer, but I did). I realize that bettas aren't good lovers, but if there is a fish, there is a way(to breed them).   -Guppyguy  As for the time, I need to look into that. I don't know how often to feed fry.

I hope I'm not coming off as mean or rude! I certainly don't intend it to be. There's just so much information that I've found in the last few years that has been so helpful. There are so many different techniques that breeders use and I find it interesting to see what others do.

Check to see if you have any breeders nearby! They might be able to cut you a good deal for quality breeding stock and they could probably help teach you the ropes.

As for supplies, yard sales, Freecycle, Craigslist, etc. are awesome. I'm sitting on roughly 200 gallons worth of tanks and most of which I've either bought from a yard sale, gotten for free, or been given by friends of relatives who know I'm into fish.

You realize you could have hundreds of fry, and each male needs to be in his own jar eventually.  Do you have that kind of money to purchase and space to house all those jars?  And the time to do water changes on all of them?

There are a gazillion bettas in the stores - unless you have the time and money to breed the very best, there is really no point in bringing more into the world.

Like I said, I'm planning by two years. IF I have the space, money, and time, I will see what I can do.(I think I said I was planning by two years) I'm not just going to  "get out dere and get 'er done" and ship 'em away, I'm waiting until everything is perfect. I almost feel like I know what I'm doing(though that's not possible).
