Why Did The Guppyguy Cross The Road?

To Figure out where he could get info on what ppl did to their FW aquarium! Oh wait- :slamhead:- that wasn't funny!!!
Anyway, whatever you did. ANYTHING. I need a good idea. By the way, which do you think is more amusing? Betta, or bala shark?

You're going to be better off with a betta for starters, balas need 6 foot tanks because they get over a foot long, are very active swimmers, and really should be kept in schools.

A few other "tankbusters":
Pacu- 3 feet, over 30 pounds!(and despite what Petco says, there are NO small species)
Common plecostomus- 2 feet+
Redtail catfish- up to 5 feet
Oscars- 12 to 15 inches
Kissing gouramis- 12 inches
Jaguar cichlids- 18 inches
Jack Dempseys- 12 inches(I hear that the Electric Blue JD's top out at 8 to 10 inches)

In other words, research before you buy fish, most of what you see at the pet store isn't adult(AND severely overcrowded, don't think stocking like they do doesn't require a lot of work just to keep them alive long enough to sell), some of them are barely out of the "fry" stage. 5 gallons is good for a betta or some shrimp, 10 gallons is pretty limited, 29 allows for bigger tetras and some of the dwarf cichlids, 55 gallons is where your choices really start to open up.

I learned a lot the hard way, but that was way before even computer bulletin boards, let alone the internet. It's a lot easier to find out stuff now.

The entire polypterus family, AKA bichirs. They're prehistoric looking, plus they're loaded for bear with personality and attitude. They look more vicious than they actually are, but you don't want to keep fish small enough to swallow with them because they are predators. Mine eat pellets and earthworms mostly. Straitjacketstar has a really sweet collection of them. They rock.

I also have a weakness for knifefish. I'd love to have a black ghost knife or (drool!) a clown knife, but I don't have a big enough tank yet for either one. A black ghost needs a 125 gallon and a clown closer to 500. But the lower jaw species of bichirs need really big tanks too, so maybe I'll get at least one of them eventually.

The site that got me started:

I love arapaima. I'd never keep one, but they also look so prehistoric. They have huge scales, the boney toungues, oh, and they fling themselves out of the water like underwater missiles of the Amazon! I like gar & balas too. Though balas are usually pretty easy going, I think I just like the violent fish. I like bettas, barracuda, arowana, and oarfish.  :hmmm: I like predators for some reason.

Arapaimas are one of my favorite fish! Gorgeous fish.

I'd like to eventually get an Arowana. I know of a fish store that had one for sale the last time I went and he was "following" me around.

Arapaimas are just absolutely beautiful! Has anyone figured out why Arowanas have barbels though? They eat insects don't they? Can I even get gar without some kind of permit or something?

Depends on your state. I also want a jardini and a lungfish. A lungfish would probably outlive me though. The Shedd Aquarium has one that's older than MY parents...
