HELP ME I"M A "NOOB" At aquariums.
« on: November 02, 2011, 06:26:54 PM »
 Hi there, I have a 5 gallon, and I need supplies. I'm a little new, and I was wondering, how does benificial bacteria show up? :dunno: I need a lil' info on fishless cycle. I plan on getting a crowntail(i know plenty about bettas) or several Endler's livebearers. I'm getting live plants so will I need a finer substrate for the roots? I have a Tetra 5 gallon and filter. The filter is strong so no filter for a betta ::) THX!!!   :bunny: No Wal Mart EVER AGAIN. They kill fishies :( Also, I might want snails. IF THERE ARE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS PLZ SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

You still need a filter IMO. Try to find an Azoo mini filter. You need to feed the bacteria. It's actually from the air. You'll need to add a food source, a drop of ammonia or a pinch of food every day until you can add fish when you're done cycling. Get a test kit with ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte bottle (strips aren't as accurate).
You can wait a few days, then start testing the ammonia and nitrites. The ammonia should go down to zero and the nitrites should start climbing. The NitrIte phase can last quite a while. Start testing for nitrates about a week in.  When your nitrites reach zero and you have nitrates, you are fully cycled. Get a Get a piece of tubing to use as a gravel vacuum, change a gallon or so every week. You're set. I don't keep plants, so you might want to go to that section for expert advice there.
I'd stay away from snails. The smaller ones can over populate quickly. The apple snails make a lot of poo and are usually pecked by bettas.

All I can say is, I agree with Puff.
I also dont do the live plants (well, unless you count marimo balls)
Malaysian Trumpet Snails will plague your tank if you feed too much
a single briggs apple snail might be nice, they come in a wide variety of colors, but like Puff said bettas love to nip at their antennas and they do poop alot
Look into freshwater nerites as a snail (they cant breed in freshwater)
If you do endlers you might also think of shrimp. Red Cherry shrimp are prolific and breed like rabbits and their not as heavy of a bioload as the snails would be. Or you could go cheaper and do ghost shrimp I find them just as fascinating to watch.
Good luck and Welcome to PetFish!

Thank you so much! I know about the ammonia and i know more about bacteria. I'm glad to be here, and I will try to stay away from snails. I study the fish more than equipment and cycling... I want a 10 gallon so I can use the little one as a quarantine. I love bettas and I hate Wal Mart. I'm broke so I'm planning by a year. I LOVE tropical fish and shrimp are cool, ESPECIALLY GHOST SHRIMP! I'm gonna wait this out until EVERYTHING is proper. I have a website that I use for info on fish.

FYI: I've had a betta that LOVED shrimp, and not in a good way.

A good filter for a single betta in a 5g is the Hagan Elite Mini - it's rated for 3g but will work fine in a 5g with a betta.  It's a small internal filter with an adjustable flow - perfect for a betta.  I also agree with the nerite snail - it won't breed and it will keep the tank free of algae.
