Capacity overboard?
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:19:54 AM »
Ok real quick, usually I don't listen to the employees at fish stores bcuz the lack of knowledge but, this guy seemed to know a lil more and stated this would work and hes kept a slight more stock with success. Just wanted to get your guys take on this. (At the end of the day I might be taking a fish back to the store for credit lol)

10 Gallon Community tank
Filters: Tetra Whisper 20 and Aqua Tech 10-20
Water changes: Weekly
Substrate: Sand
Temp: 77

Fish:
3 Blue Dwarf Gouramis
6 Neon Tetras
2 African Dwarf Frogs

Now, I feel like I got talked into the 3rd Gourami because of the special. Am I too overstocked for the filteration I have? Or I'm just overstocked in general? Would this work long term, or am I setting myself up for a Short temp situation?

This is what Aqadvisor says for both:

For everything + 3 Gouramis:
You have plenty of aquarium filtration capacity.

Your aquarium filtration capacity for above selected species is 201%.
Recommended water change schedule: 37% per week.
Your aquarium stocking level is 114%

For everything + 2 Gouramis:
You have plenty of aquarium filtration capacity.

Your aquarium filtration capacity for above selected species is 245%.
Recommended water change schedule: 31% per week.
Your aquarium stocking level is 100%.

The male's dorsal fin is pointed and the female's is rounded. You can get three if you have one male and two females. Or all females.

Looks like one male and two females...

Although I am starting to notice the male is getting a bit nippy with one of the females. He doesn't chase all day around the tank but, every now then he'll nip. Is this normal behavior?

So you got the 3rd. one. They will nip and harass the females.

I already had the third one, if you read my OP I was asking if I was overstocked and if I should have took one back... Today there was a scuffle for about 20 secs. These guys at the shop said they were peaceful fish... Whats the deal?

The occasional nip & chase is ok. If it's a constant behavior then it becomes a problem. Any decor for them to hide in? Actually I prefer floating plants or even any long stemmed plants. Mind you, if the male is overly agressive even that wont help.

Ever notice in the Bible, whenever God needed to punish someone, make an example or needed a killing, he sent an angel? Ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? An existence spent praising your God, but always with 1 wing dipped in blood. Would you really want to see an angel?

Seems like its mainly a food issue. I feed them flakes and my Frogs Blood worms.
But once they see the turkey baster they already know it has blood worms and fight over it. Then for about an hour to two hours they hold a grudge.

I'm seriously thinking of taking one or two back and just swapping them out for a few fancy guppies. My aim was for a peaceful tank, if I wanted a semi aggressive I woulda picked up some cichlids.

Gouramis tend to be peaceful towards other species. Not so much with their own. Males especially will fight except for dwarf croakers(AKA sparkling gouramis) and chocolates with chocolates being iffy. Most dwarfs in the pet trade are male, the females are considerably duller. In 40 years I've never seen a female at a chain store. Multiple gouramis in a smaller(30 gallon and under) tanks is not the way to go for a peaceful community. 1 anabantoid(gouramis, bettas, or paradise fish) per tank unless they're females, dwarf croakers or chocolates.

EDIT: I have seen male pearl gouramis get along as adults, but even then it was in a 55 gallon.
