I had a friend who trained her Jack Russels to dig on command!  If you really want to encourage the behaviour whenever he's doing it just say "Dig! Good boy, Dig!", then take him to where you want him to dig and give him the command again.  Do this over and over and eventually he'll put it together.  Btw... my friend had a sandbox for her dogs to dig in... it's a natural instinct of JRT's.

Dachshunds are digging fools too. Bred to chase animals into their dens and drag 'em back out. Not too bright though, Tag is 7 years old and still hasn't figured out that he can't dig through the living room carpet. When he does it I tell him I'm going to kick him in the rear so hard that I'll end up wearing him as a slipper, but he doesn't believe me.

It would have to be a pretty big sandbox for him, that hole was huge by the time he was done, and it only took him like five minutes total.

Cholly, he occasionally tries to dig through the carpet, but so far has understood "no" when  we tell him to stop.....

Well... you need big toys for big boys.  And when he digs in one area and it's down to the bottom you can stop him, turn him around and set him to it again.

Chase is 8 1/2 and he still trys to scrunch up the carpet in my office/fish room to make a bed... silly little bugger doesn't seem to understand that it's attached to the floor.
