Keeping North American Native Fishes

I started in this hobby of fish keeping about 20 years ago.  Started out like most with the bread and butter run of the mill tropicals like most folks, learned all the do and dont stuff, and that not everything thats in a book is always the hard and fast rules.  Next i moved to cichlids, of all kinds, and next or i guess at the same time, started into Saltwater fish and coral keeping with a 150 gallon reef.  I found out that is an expensive hobby to learn from the ground up, but mastered that as well, Kinda  lol.  A fews years passed and i found that i was once again bored, so being a lifetime fisherman, i stumbled onto the hobby of keeping North American Natives,  Joined NANFA, read all i could find, and went out and got me some fish. Here are a couple i will always keep, because they are within a mile of my home, and free.

My own focus has been on large tropical predators, not because natives don't appeal to me, but because they're illegal to keep in Washington, my home state. I'll have to enjoy yours. :hihi:

Ive kept a Blue Gill for a few monthes but learning that that 1 fish could get me a 6month prison stay and upwards of $5,000 fine (Welcome to Alabama), I let the Atlanta Aquarium have him... Natives are very pretty if you know what your looking for, but, its not worth keeping them if its illegal in your state...

Here are the rules for keeping Native Fish in Alabama

Alabama

I can find no mention of fines etc, for keeping natives in alabama, however if your really want to keep these fish, they can be obtained from a licensed dealer, such as Zimmermans Fish, and no state laws apply to those fish at all except they cant be released into your states waters.

those sunfish are nice. that last on eis georgeous. who knew? i guess north america can produce nice looking fish too.

LOL. I always thought they were Central American. Having just looked them up, I see that theyre actually native to Texas. Wow. Who knew?

I've been thinking of getting some just to see if it would tick off Washington State. We have a few pretty retarded laws for keeping natives. Granted, it keeps half-wits from keeping rainbow trout in a 10 gallon, but there are a few keepers that know how to and would house them properly.

i dont know hopw you would keep trout in a tank. thats odd. i would like a 1000 gallon one day with peacock bass though. omg. i just remembered that when i was a young chap, i kept bluegills and small bass i used to catch. not a good idea to put bass in a 10. mine committed suicide.
