dead guppie
« on: January 26, 2011, 01:39:44 PM »
today  i  introduced  2 neolampr daffodils  to my  60 liter  community tank
containing
1 red  male betta splendens
3 sword tails
2 wag tail platy's
and  now  5  guppies 2 male  and 3 female

i just found the sixth female guppie  floating  on  the  surface
and the poor little fish has probably been attacked
most if not all of her tail is  gone

my  questions  are
who is responsible for this  the daffodils or  the betta  ?
the betta  and all the other fish  were  fine  this only happend after  the  daffodils were  introduced am i better off seperating  the daffodils from the others  ?
to prevent any  other guppie  killings  ..or  worse

and  equally important   do i need to clean out my  tank  will the dead guppie  harm the other inhabitants  ?

edit :
closer inspection reveals it was not one of the female guppies but the other male
could this mean it was not the daffodils at all  but  the  other male guppie taking out his rival  ?
it is suspect though that ot happens just after the introduction of the  daffodils

Sometimes bettas get confused, and think that other fish with long pretty fins are a betta too and will fight them.  Really no telling for sure.

but this guppie  had  no  fancy  fins or tail at all he  just had shimmering neon coloration
is it  at all possible  the daffodils  were responsible  ?
all the other fish   other then the betta  and the daffodils were d near panicking when i found the  dead guppie

the  daffodils  are male and female

while the betta  was introduced  in to the tank  along with the  guppies and the  sword tails he's been living with them for  2 weeksi doubt he would suddenly turn  hostile on  1 of them   especially  not the  non fancy tail   guppie

I didn't know what the daffodils were at first until I just now looked it up,  Yes the Cichlids  can most certainly be the culprits and don't really belong with that group of fish that you are keeping.

sadly  the female  died as well after  i seperated them  (  stress probably)

the sad sorry tale might have a happy end after all
i returned the male daffodil  back  to the petstore who took him back  (  he survived the whole endavour  thankfully)
and i  got  3  female guppies instead  im sure my remaining male guppie  is over the moon now

and i suppose i wil leave  it at that
