New cat!
« on: September 28, 2010, 11:23:57 PM »
Well, not really.

I was on my way home from class when I saw a cat laying upright on the side of the road. I turned around to go back but somebody else had stopped so I figured they were going to move it or take it. I ended up getting a weird gut feeling that it wouldn't be either so I turned around again just as they were driving around the cat*. I stopped, pressed my panic button (somebody had just turned onto the road), and went to grab the cat. It was YOWLING at me, but couldn't see me. It was closing it's eyes, putting it's head down, and was breathing heavily. I quickly scruffed it and set it in my car. It sprawled out and didn't moved.

I thought it was going to die in my passenger seat before I could get home. That's a 2 minute drive. It would yowl a bit and then it just stopped.
Yeah, not a good feeling to know that you might have a dead cat in your car.

Got home, showed it to my mom, and she thought that the cat was blind in at least one eye. I thought it was fully blind in both. Since then it's gotten out of the carrier to ea a little bit of wet food, taken a nap, and has proved it does in fact have some sight whether it's one eye or both. It's now afraid of me and flinches away when I try to pet it.

I dunno if the cat got hit by a car or what, but I do know that it's underweight/emaciated, dehydrated, and looks like something did happen to the one eye. I'm not sure on gender because it acts painful and I don't want to mess with it too much, but my guess is a girl. I talked to a humane society worker on FB IM and she gave me a phone number for a rescue group to call in the morning. This cat needs medical care and soon, because if she's suffering it may be best to have her euthanized.

*Later found out after I posted about the cat on FB that it was one of my classmates and her brother. She made her brother stop and move the cat, but it ran back out into the road.

that is sooo sad. I'm so glad you were there! Even if she is put down at least it will be humanely done and she will get a little loving beforehand. Poor dear.

I called a rescue an hour away and they said they would take her, so I drove all the way out there (and got severely lost on the way home). The woman that I had talked to on the phone gave her a quick look over, gave her something to kill fleas, and a pain med. The vet wasn't there at the time so she didn't get any vet care while I was there.

It's a lovely place! There were 30 lazy cats and kittens in the building that I was in. They were all so relaxed, sweet, and playful. They also had a "kitty city" building and I'm not sure if that was for cats not ready for adoption or what.

I'm not sure, unfortunately.
I'm going to call tomorrow, but I have a feeling she was PTS. I plan on calling tomorrow to see if she was/what was wrong with her, or if she's still alive.
