PEOPLE DISGUST ME!!!
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:37:18 PM »
We know of this guy that has 4 three year old shih tzus and two puppies who he was going to have put down, ALL OF THEM, as a way to get back at his girlfriend for leaving him. They were her dogs and she couldn't take them and they were unable to find homes for them. So he was going to have them all euthanized. My friend stepped in and begged this guy to let us have them. She's getting the adults next Thursday, the puppies have already been homed. Looks like I'll be taking in a couple until we can find homes for them as my friend already has 2 dogs of her own and 6 dogs in a duplex is not the easiest thing to deal with. We're going to be moving, and we do have our puppy but I'm determined to help. I'll baby gate off a large area to keep the small dogs in when were not home (3 hours at the max). My dog isn't violent, he's just rough because of his size, he's still getting used to small dogs, do you think that would be ok? any advice? I know it's a lot to take on but I can handle it. I need to help them. Anyway this is my rant about how awful some people can be, and also

I saw the post on facebook... I didn't realize the story behind it!  Some people can be just pure mean, sometimes.  I'm glad you are helping out with the situation.

Rather than a baby gate, which Sheldon could possibly get over (given the temptation), would there be a room you could secure them in?

Wow - someone should put the GUY down!  Good for you and your friend for helping these dogs out.

If it was me, I would either crate your dog or crate the little dogs.  I just wouldn't trust a gate - I've seen big dogs jump over them or knock them down, and I've seen little dogs actually climb up them.  The little dogs will most likely be nervous in a new home with new people and a strange dog, and from what I've seen of that breed they are somewhat nervous, yappy little dogs to start with (most little dogs are nervous and yappy).  And altho your dog is a sweetie, he's a large, intact, energetic male and if the gate was breached it could be bad, especially since he is young and I am guessing not very used to small little yappy dogs.  A crate would ensure everyones safety, and if you could find a large one then either your dog or all of the small dogs should fit into it and be fine for a few hours.  Do you have Craigslist up there or a similiar site where you may be able to find a free or cheap crate?  I wish you were closer I'd give you one of mine.  If not I'd close either him or the other dogs off in another room.  Better safe than sorry.

Oh and I have a tip for crate users - lock them.  My little dog is an expert at opening a crate - she'll work on the door all day until the bar slides out and the door opens - she can do it in a matter of minutes now.  I use a large binder clip to "lock" the slider bar in place.

My 50 lb blue heeler mix never tried to get over the baby gate until this last summer......  turns out he is very frightened of thunder, and managed to easily climb/jump the fence.  Once he did it once, it was no use gating him in.  He just jumps the gate easily, now.  (He is probably almost 4 years old.. I think we got him fall 2006?)

Fortunately he hasn't tried to climb the chain-link fence.... hope he never does!

Yeah our new place has a very large bathroom that might be an option for the little dogs. We would likely wait till we're moved, which is next Sunday, before we took any in. The dogs aren't coming to us until a week from today anyway. Shelton isn't crate trained so we don't have a crate. He has been around little dogs as  most of my friends have small breed dogs, and there are a bunch in the building, so he has had exposure to them, but he can still get rowdy. We have cats too (my poor cats are going to hate me with 3 dogs in the house) and he hasn't been a danger to them, but dogs are definitely different. He loves all dogs and just wants to play with anything he sees, but because of his size I'm worried. I don't want to stress the little dogs out too much either.

I'm calling the local no-kill shelter as I was advised by a friend today that they have a waiting list for people who want non-allergenic dogs. They are still fairly young so we're hoping for some interest.

I will keep you guys posted! Thanks for you're support!

The Shelter said there has been a lot of people looking for small dogs lately, so that sounds promising...were just waiting now until we have them and can know more about their temperament and the sexes and such...we don't know anything about them yet, and the owner is being really uncooperative...it took us a couple days to even convince him to let us have them. He refuses to give us vaccination records or anything. Shelton is all up to date on his shots so I'm not too concerned about him. I just want to save these little lives!!!

Three's a crowd with me, plus we've got Ash the cat, not tempted at all. Definitely understand you wanting to help though, two our three dogs are physical abuse rescues. Best wishes! Watching for updates!
