1st time Trying to breed my bettas help!
« on: March 23, 2010, 03:10:52 PM »
Hello, I am a new betta owner and after lots of research decided to breed a male and female I have. I conditioned them....the male has mad a nest......female was added (showing the signs)......Now how long can I leave her in there? She started going up to the nest, but is now swimming away from him FAST!......I have been watching them so I know they have not successfully done it yet. What do I do now?

He seems to be building bigger and then goes to her now and then but she is still running. Did I fail already? Please help!

Just curious.... what kind of bettas do you have, and what do you plan to do with all the babies?

Remember, at a certain point, the males will each need their own grow-out tank.....

My male is a metallic green veil tail with fuchsia shown when he flares(kinda looks like a comb tail but he was from a pet store), the female is a blue moon tail (she is large...maybe a plakat?)........ I plan on keeping them in large mason jars when they need to be separated...... I will keep a couple of them and have found some stores that will give store credit. I would love to start getting in to some better quality fish and plan on attending the convention in Indy in June. I thought that I would give it a shot with the ones that I already have to get framiliar with the process.....

back to the original question....should I take the female out? The male is still building bigger now that rejected.....she is swimming fast away or laying at the bottom. They were conditioned and she is showing the right signs.....I have done my reading but am stuck. Should I leave her over night?

Did you use the glass "hurricane" type chimney/tube to "tease" him?  That is apparently sometimes successful.... he wants her, but can't get to her...  Maybe leave her in that overnight so he can't injure her.

Yes, I teased them in a clear container. They have been together all day. Thanks so much for replying with me being new....I know that I have lots to learn, that is why I am here! I will put her in the container for the night and then re release. Thanks again. If everything goes well, I will have some pics. I can still post some of the rest!

Best wishes!
