Is there a right way to handle fish?
« on: December 04, 2009, 12:08:51 AM »
When I catch my fish in the net, I like to gently hold the bottom of the net and then to lower the net into the water and release them.

I notice that the pet shops tend to grab the fish in the net almost in a fist, then throw the fish out from the opening of the bag into the water - is this a good thing or a bad thing?

just curious.

It's to prevent the fish from jumping free at an inopportune time, like when they could hit the floor. For a fish that does get traumatized by simply being netted(not all freak out), it's not necessary. For fish like that, your method would produce less stress. For most fish stores, net, trap, quickly release minimizes stress for the greatest number of fish. It's really a give and take thing.
