Is this normal for my heater?

There's an orange light that is off sometimes and then it goes back on. Is the heater broken or is this normal? I have a Neptune 200 watt heater. I checked if the plug stays in the outlet.

Oh I thought it was broken. Is it even necessary for me to have a heater? The lowest temperature the tank has been was 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The air conditioner for the house is always above 75 degrees.

Depends on your fish and if the room is ever too cool entirely. Some species prefer it warmer than that and usually the tank temp will be a little below the room temperature(I believe due to evaporation) without a heater in my experience.

I like heaters because they keep the temp pretty steady with no major fluctuations.

Most fish sold in pet stores are tropical and they require temperatures of 78-80F. Be SURE to get a separate thermometer to double check the water temperature, the temperature settings on the heaters are notoriously inaccurate.
