Krib brood overlap!
« on: January 08, 2010, 10:21:13 AM »
hey there

my first post on this forum, looks like a friendly place so thought id ask you a few questions.

i have a 165L aqua one tank, all cycled and mature, which contains  a pair of kribensis - on the 27th of december they took me completely by surprise by emerging from a cave with about 45 tiny fry in tow! a few weeks on there are only 3 left (large numbers disappeared overnight, presumed it was the parents coz it was their first spawn) they are about 4-6mm long, still keeing in a loose group - the pparent do hover over them sometimes but are mostly off doing their own thing.  however, they are now showing spawning behaviour, showing off to each other (and female is trying to fold herself in half  :P) and the 3 fry are still there. when the new brood hatch, will the old fry become lunch? i do have a spare tank (only 20L though) but am a bit reluctant to move them as there are a few neons in there sick with mouth fungus, and i think the stress of moving may just kill the fry anyways... anything i can do?

Sorry not  krib expert. If you can place the fry (assuming free swimming fry) in a breeder net/trap to be hung in the parents tank, that might work for your immediate needs.

Again not sure about kribs but I have been reading up on apisto (similar in many ways) and if there is an "overlap" in fry production, the Apisto parents will attack and eat the older fry, as it is their instinct to protect the newer fry. So as long as you have free swimming fry (sounds like you do) you should be ok to catch and release into the breeder net with some moss or what ever their food source is. Best of luck.

Perhaps someone else with some more knowledge can pipe in.

improvised one from a small plastic fish tank hung in the tank, so if anyone has tips on catching fry let me know :P

You can use a siphon hose or a turkey baster to catch smaller fry. They might survive the second spawning but I really doubt it.
