1 Gallon Shrimp Tank
« on: August 30, 2008, 08:29:21 PM »
I am working on setting up a 1 gallon shrimp jar, so I thought I would post some pictures of my progress here as I go. This first one is just a picture of the jar and the wood that I want to have in it. I am still working on getting the wood to the point where it no longer dyes the water red (Odd, but true. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, but it gives a very brilliant red color to the water as I boil it. I am actually going to try dying a white T-shirt with it.)

I am planning on putting some java moss in it, and then some red cherry shrimp, and lighting it from above with a custom LED light.

Fredjikrang, are you in the US? If so, what city and state are you in?

Did you know all wood in the pine family are poisonous to inverts? That includes pines, cedars, hemlocks, and any evergreens. Something in the wood makes the shrimp very sick.

I'm not sure how well your 1g jar will do. Shrimp do not like ammonia or nitrites. Do you do some (say 20%) water changes several times per week?

I'm in northern Utah, and it is a hardwood, just not sure which one. It is not a tree, but some kind of shrub or vine. (I am pretty sure at least.)

The aquarium will have a substantial amount of java moss in it, which will help with nitrates and so on. It isn't completely set up yet, so there are no shrimp at the moment. I would be putting about 3-5 shrimp in it.

Good to know about the wood though. I will check the safety of it with some snail first.

The boiling of the wood is coming along well. I removed as much of the bark as I could, and that seemed to help a lot. I am hoping that it will be pretty much ready by the end of the day.

Well, the wood has pretty much stopped staining the water now, and I have had a snail in the jar for a day, and it is still doing fine, so I am planning on bringing home some java moss tonight and doing some decorating. Then I'll bring home some shrimp and introduce them into the jar either Friday or Saturday.

I have also ordered the LED that I am going to try to use as a light for the jar. It should be here next week sometime.

Here is a new picture, now with moss! The light I ordered for it hasn't arrived yet, but it should sometime next week. In the mean time, I have it sharing light with my terrarium. :D

I would add a filter to the tank. This a simple one I use I like to take a foam brick from an aquaclear filter and cut it in half and then cut a hole into it to slide and airstone inside it and then I rubberband it to a rock and sink it into a tank. Use a very small airpump to power the air stone. I used this with my fry before and I just started using it. I recommend picking up a bottle of tetras SafeStart.  Most petstores can order it for you if they do not have it.

Thanks, Santaa, for posting on an aging thread!!  If you hadn't, I would have missed out on this very cool aquatic creation! :fish:

Nice job. Plese keep us up-dated on your progress. Check KSL.com. They have a classified add section. Look under fish and I have seen a few adds selling Cherry Shrimp. Good luck.
