I'm a substitute teacher.  For some reason, the group I am attracted to is the middle school group. They are real squirrely at times, but there is just something about them that makes me want to be there!

I sub sometimes at the high school, but not much.

I'm a pee-on, for National Oilwell Varco. They employ a lot of us.  Go figure I live in Alberta and I'm employed in the oil industry.  I'd much rather be in the horticulture industry.... at least they have some culture beyond rough necks and booze!!!

Right now, as I posted earlier, I am a substitute teacher, but I am looking for a permanent job.  What in?  I really don't know.  I need a job that provides benefits, since my hubby just got laid off.   :gloom:

Not sure what is ahead...  it may be pretty hard for a 57 yr old engineer to find a new job with comparable pay and benefits.  And, like many people in the US, we tend to spend too much and not save enough.

Sorry, just a bit down right now about the uncertainty of the whole situation.

Yeah, I know it will all work out... we've been talking more about his plans, and future..

the severance package will take us through January or February, depending on expenses like cobra benefits.

He will also get just about any kind of job to help stretch it out (you can usually earn a certain amount/week without affecting unemployment.. that's the way is was 15 years ago when this last happened)

We've been so spoiled with the super low cost of our benefits, as compared to other employers..  whew!

Thanks for all of your encouraging words.. I know we aren't the only ones going through all of this.. but it sure is a shock when it happens!

As a mechanical engineer in the automotive industry I am also feeling the effects of the economy. I still have my job, but we have laid off all of our temporary employees and management has offered unpaid timeoff to anyone that wants it. Makes me a bit nervous...

Anyway, about my job... I have designed and programmed a couple small machines. I spend most of my time on the manufacturing floor trouble shooting machines and messing with robots. It's not as cool as it sounds, but it pays the bills.

Its a ill wind blowing and everyone is nervous. Hope things settle down quickly. Thank god I don't invest in shares, but still retired people like me are always vulnerable.
If I had to live my life again, what would I avoid?
