thinning betta fins
« on: January 07, 2006, 05:55:12 PM »
Hi,  My nephews Bettas fins look like they are thinning or maybe a better term is transparent sort of. The Betta had a few very small pin sized wholes in a fin, the water in his 2 gallon bowl is getting a 90% water change every other day, ammonia is always at 0, this is an unfiltered tank. He was treating his Betta with 2 teaspoons salt per 1 gallon of water and the tiny wholes are almost gone now. The Betta is eating well, swimming normal, acting normal. It sort of looks like his fins are transparent now,  the water beginning used is well water that has a water softner attached. Is thinning fins a symptom of something? Maybe some side afect of using softened water? The fins are as long and full as when he first got him.
Thanks.

Fin regrowth is first transparent, and the color gradually fills in over time. If the transparent spots are only over where the holes were, I wouldn't worry. If transparency is occuring elsewhere, then hopefully someone else here has an idea as to what's goin on. Just keep an eye on his behavior.

Bettas do fine in soft water. 90% water changes every other day in a 2-gal is good when you're trying to control a disease the fish has because it ensures that the water is pristine (100% changes every day are even better--that way you know nothing is building up). For a healthy fish, that frequency is not really necessary.

Water conditioners usually just break down chlorine and chloramine present in the water, so if you're sure you don't have any of those, a conditioner probably won't make much of a difference. They do sell stress coat conditioners at pet stores, some with aloe vera, which may make a difference. If the betta is acting fine, though, it's probably not vital.

Hi this is verena's nephew. His gill was sticking out this morning so I added medince this morning. He is eating.  I added Fungus Clear as it treats fin rot and multiple other problems.

The directions below are how I added the medicine.
He is in 2 gallons so I added 2 tablespoons of the solution. I hope this makes him better.

1 Gallon Dosage:
Dissolve 1 tablet in 10 tablespoons of water. Add 1 tablespoon of concentrate mixture to 1 gallon. Wait four days until you do a second dosage. If you must do a second dose: Change 25% of the water and repeat dosage.

Manufacturer: Jungle Labs

He is 2 gallons of water so I doubled what was recommended for 1 gallon. I got the directions for smaller tanks from www.healthybetta.com  Hopefully he gets better.

Melafix is not a medicine.  It is a very weak solution that helps heal damage AFTER the infection is gone.  But it is to weak to CURE the infection when present.

Aloe is actually irritating to most bettas and could cause problems like this.  Avoid conditioners which contain unneeded ingrediants like Aloe.
