What does new fin growth look like?
« on: January 01, 2006, 05:03:29 AM »
My betta, Jerry, recently got a few small holes and a few tears in his rear fin. I want to know what the fin growth will look like. Anyone got pictures? I do not think it is fin rot as it appeared overnight and I keep his water very clean. He is a very active betta. I have heard that getting overactive can cause him to turn his fins ragged and I think that may be what happened. I thought they were supposed to be lazy fish. Is that a common myth or is my betta just an oddball? I usually change his water with 2 days in between water changes. He is in a 2 gallon unfiltered bowl. Since his fin is a little ragged I have added aquarium salt to his water. 2 teaspoons of salt in the water. I have been changing the water daily 100% change since it appeared a few days ago and adding salt with the water change. Anyone with pictures of new fin growth very early new fin growth please post pictures or describe what it looks like in detail. As I have no idea what I should be looking for. On average how soon should I see new growth? How long on average does it take to heal?

Hi
Finrot looks like clear growth that appears where the fin rotted away.  The fin colours up eventually.  You'd be surprised at just how quick finrot settles in....finrot is really a symptom of another problem such as poor water quality, a sudden increase of temperatue, or poor diet.  The only way a betta can get holes in his finnage is if there is something in the tank/bowl that is sharp enough to puncture the fin.....raggedness in the fins can definitely indicate fin rot or tail biting, but you would know if your betta is a biter as they are very easy to catch in the act.  Ragged fins cannot appear if the fish is overactive...they can get a split tail, but not ragged fins.  Just keep up with the salt addition and water changes and follow the progress.  If you see the rot not getting better within 2weeks, it is then a good idea to start treatment with a broad spectrum antibiotic such as the m1 and m2 combination or trisulfa.  Try changing his diet to a higher quality food with lots of variety and see what happens :)

I did add a little statue recently that I took out because I feared maybe it caused a problem even though it said it was perfect for bettas. It is an Easter Island head. You think that may have caused a problem? I took out his ornament and a silk plant to because I have to change his water frequently and I like to disinfect his ornaments and his gravel with salt water and rinse them off very well with fresh water when I change the water. Do you think I should leave the Easter Island head out? I honestly do not think it is anything to do with bad water or bad diet. I change the water with two days in between water changes. He is in 2 gallon unfiltered fish bowl. I feed him two differrent brands of pellets one biogold pellet in the morning and an aquariun pellet at night. I also feed him Freeze dried bloodworm and frozen bloodworm once a week. I have been thinking of adding brine shrimp to his diet. Is that a good food for bettas?  Is there anything else I should know about taking care of my betta that I am not doing? I test his ammonia every day except now since I am changing his water daily and adding new salt to his water. I do not think there is a need to be testing since his water is being changed daily.

take a piece of panty hose and run it over the statue, if it snags the hose, it can snag betta's fins.  That's a method I've read about in a bunch of groups.

Ok I will do that before I go to add it back to his tank to make sure it is safe if it snags I will be calling the company to complain as it says perfect for bettas.
