Zero, you should get yourself a 'lotl! I don;t see any reason why you should not get one!

Everyone deserves an axolotl!

breeders can mail order you. This is how I got an axolotl in the mail from Pennslyvania. I mostly get from local  breeders though. When it comes to axolotl there are many to be found, even biologically supply sell some, it all depends if your state/contry has a law against mailing them in, like California. Infact, I believe, in Australia axolotl are the only salamander not illegal to own as a pet.

Good luck with your axolotl hunt.

here are my two older guys

I'd love to have one or two myself but axolotls are illegal up here in Canada.  I was told it was because the wild populations are on the CITES list.

Which is strange, since axolotls breed so easily in captivity, the pet trade doesn't traffic in wild-caught specimens.  In fact, I heard that the captive-raised population is so large that the species itself is not considered endangered, just the wild populations ...

Yours are absolutely beautiful, by the way.  Especially your juvenile.

Pic of Harmony's firebelly tank!  Oh, and in case you were worried about the ruff rocks, I've got moss in there, plus those rocks aren't as "ruff" as they look.  The black ones are kinda spongey acctually, they're fake.

In the second pic you can see one of the toads I adopted from work.  He had an ulceration on the top of his head and was treated, but will always have that "bald spot" on the top of his head.  He needs a tupe!

Frogfan23: I doubt that. CITES will only cause trouble if you are trying to import animals. They may be worried about releases into waters containing neotenic tiger sals perhaps...if it is true.

Axolotls are illegal to send to CA since CA is banning sale of tiger sals as bait, and the feds decided on a blanket ban on all ambystoma.

nonamethefish:  You may be right.  The guy that told me about CITES was in New York.  Also, I just picked up a leucistic juvenile (white with black eyes) two days ago from Big Al's.  It cost me a whopping $70 cdn.  The attendant told me that they haven't had any axolotls for five years ($30 then).  His came from a local breeder.  He said something along the same lines about importing, as well.

Given that the first salamander I ever kept as a pet was a tiger sal, I am happy to read that CA banned them as bait.  Good on 'em!

Great find! If you can pair it up you will soon have hundreds.

On the bait, funny thing as I bought one of those too. Great deal, esp. when the petstores were selling them for $20. I believe the reasons for the ban was that these salamanders spread disease and also hybridized with our native California tiger sal.
