How do you know if your betta is stressed?
« on: October 13, 2005, 07:39:38 AM »
I put all new decorations in Sebastians tank on Sunday and he hasn't blown a nest, not even one bubble, since then.  But he seems happy - swimming in and out the caves and all, wagging his tail when he sees me, eating like a pig.  Doesn't look stressed to me, but how would I really know?

they tend to lose color and get horizontal "stress stripes" if they are stressed.

Males get stripes too?  Thought it was only the gals.

Then I guess my guy is fine and just doesn't feel like blowing bubbles :(

My plakat boy gets stripes if he gets stressed... All my boys will sulk when they're upset... and it's really pretty easy to tell if they're stressed, they just don't act like the fishy you know and love. If he doesn't seem stressed to you, and you know well what his normal behavior level is at, then he may just not be wanting to make a bubblenest. Bubblenests aren't always a sign of anything, some sick fish will make them and some happy fish never will. Each boy is different. Good luck with him!

How long has he been in his new tank? How long did it take for him to make his first nest? He feels he's in a new territory, so he may be wanting to wait.

I've had him about 6 weeks now.  He made a nest the first day I had him.  He is in the same thank but I have put in new decorations (Iwould love them if I were a fish) with caves and hidey holes.  I also added a bit of an almond leaf.  All this was on Sunday and he hasn't blown a bubble since.

But he doesn't seem stressed.  I did mention on a post earlier in the week that he seemed a bit more laid back than usual and wondered if it was the almond leaf making him lazy or something.

Sometimes they're just not in the mood. :) Has he had a water change since Sunday? Most of my bettas blow their nests like the day after a water change.

Well I hope everything is ok with him.  You are such a nice fish Mommy for buying him new decorations.  :)
