My Bettas Diet
« on: September 21, 2005, 01:18:50 PM »
I started out the first 3 days of feeding him NutraFin Max Betta Food flakes which has dried bloodworms mixed in with it.  It was just a little packet that came with his tank.  So I went and bought Tetra BettaMin Tropical Medley flakes and gave him them as well.  I usually either do one in the morning and the other at night or one for the 2 feedings one day and the other for the 2 feedings the next and so on.  Well he doesn't seem to awfully fond of the flakes...so being the wonderful Mommy I am ;D I went and bought him Wardley Betta pellets.  Now my question is, is having two different brands of food, Tetra and Wardley not a good idea or is it ok?  Also should I feed him like flakes/pellets in the morning and the other one in the evening.  Or should I feed him pellets one day for both feedings and flakes the next day for both feedings and so on?  Sorry this is so long...anyone with suggestions please feel free to help me out!  Thanks for all your help!  :)

It is prefectly ok to have 2 different brands of food ;D It doens't really matter which day or when you switch types of food, but i like to just alternate the days to make it easier. So in your case it would be flakes on one day, then pellets on the next day, flakes on the next day, then pellets on the next day....I

I do want to mention that many cases of constipation are caused from blood worms and flake food.

I use Hiraki (sp?) betta bites.  My constipation prone fish has no problems.  It's great that you offer a variety, but I would consider making the pellets the main diet, since your fish doesn't like flakes anyway.  Also its better to use a betta flake than a tropical flake.  They have different ingredients and tend to have less protein which bettas crave.

Dorn27----got question, you said that bloodworms cause constipation--how about frozen brine shrimp?  I feed my bettas 90% of the time HIKARI betta pellets, and was thinking about getting some frozen brine shrimp as extra treat during the week, what do you think.  So far I've had not trouble with constipation, but what do I know, I've only been at this thing for just a few months.

The flakes are specifically for Bettas.  They are Tetra BETTAMin flakes.  I don't feed him the blood worms all the time, they are a treat.  A lot of people on here feed their Bettas blood worms as treats.  I figured they would be ok a couple times a week as treats.  At least that's what almost everyone on here says.  Plus I fast him once a week to help with constipation.

See, my guy doesn't like the pellets but he loves the flakes.  The flakes are so stinky tho!
