Betta has yellow ball on bottom lip
« on: September 14, 2005, 01:32:58 AM »
Hi recently i noticed a yellow ball on my bettas bottom lip, it is really freaking me out.  Does anyone have a clue what this is?  I noticed he probably also has fin rot which I am starting the treatment for today.

Hi and welcome to petfish :)
This is most definitely a bacterial infection (which is what the fin rot is too).  How often do you change the water in your bettas tank and how big is it??

It is best to cup your betta and do a 100% water change on the bowl/tank making sure that you match the new tank water ti the old tank water (and treat the water too :)). Add 1 teaspoon of rock or aquarium salt per gallon and dissolve it fully into the water in the tank/bowl once each water change.  Float the cup in the tank/bowl for half an hour to match the temperatures and put your betta back.  If the bowl is 1 gallons or less, then 100% water changes in the suggested manner every day adding the salt aswell should help out with the bacterial inection.

If there is no improvement after a week or so, purchase some maracyn2, do another 100% water change and start treating your betta....remember, its not a good idea to change the water while treating your fish with any medication or you will dilute the medication rendering it useless (unless otherwise stated to do water changes during treatment on the packaging).  usually very clean water and salt help out alot, but if it doesn't then medications are necessary :)

Thanks for your help, we really appreciate it. We are using the aquarium salt as of tonight. We also read that we could bleach the gravel for the 10 gallon tank we plan to move him into, supposedly after bleaching you can use rock salt to pull the bleach out of the gravel then change the water and put conditioner in and let the gravel soak for another day in the sun. Which i hope will make him happier in his new 10 gallon home rather than the 2 gallon goldfish bowl, But we dont plan on the transfer until his fin rot and other infection are gone.  I believe i m rambling now i just wanted to say thanks for the great help!! ;D

A 10-gallon all to him?!  What a lucky boy!  Hope he's getting better!

LOL...Nah not just for him but a few other undecided fish. Nothing that he's gonna want to fight at least I heard that ghost shrimp go well with bettas so I figured we could try some of those.  Any ideas on whatelse we should put in there?
