Need Help Cooling a tank!!
« on: August 14, 2005, 11:43:19 PM »
Is there any way to cool a tank? My 1 gallon tank in the day time gets to over 85+ degrees  :o and at night to the morning it gets to 79-81 degrees.  :-\  I leave the fan in my room on the whole day the door is open lights off and windows open. Any way to cool a tank without hurting my betta in there?

Hmmm... it's a small tank, so the ice cube method might not work so well. What if you put the tank in a cooler place in the house? Like the bathroom or some other cool room? What about pointing the fan directly on the tank?

I know when my 10 gets too hot I float a bag full of ice cubes in the water - but because your tank is so small, I'd be afraid that the ice would make it too cold too fast.

Put 2 ice cubes in a ziplock snack bag and float it.

do you have any backing on the tank? I have some tanks up against a window next to other tanks soi  had to take tinfoil and use that for backing AND on each of their sides leaving only teh front un blocked off on some tanks. the regular backing some aquarium backgrounds have still let light through and promote algae growth. so i used foil to relflect the sun off.. its worked so far on every tank and i've done this for... about a year. Perhaps you could set up a fan in front of the tank or on top where the water meets the air. might help...
i'm in my own happy little world. dont worry. they know me there.

I tried moving my tank to the floor and then placing a fan directly to it but its still goes up to the same temperature everyday.  Everywhere in my house during hot days is hot.. no air con or anything when you enter from the outside its like an oven.. Nothing is around the tank to keep heat trapped. When I float ice cubes in the tank do i take out my fish?

no, you leave the fish in there or the sudden hot to cold shock will get them.

The trick is to use very small amounts of ice in a tiny tank.  I would used crushed ice from a dispenser or crush one cube and place in a plastic bag to float.  Do not do more than one cube at a time in tank this size.

You might also consider keeping an airstone on.  Though bettas don't need it, the air flow and surface agitation might help.

Thanks :D I succesfully lowered the temp from 86 to 81 the first bag i put in my fish was observing it. he then went directly under the bag because the cooler water was sinking to him and he enjoyed it :D
