« on: July 24, 2005, 08:17:49 PM »
Hi all....
is there a difference if a betta is in a large gallon tank??!?!
Or does it have to stay in those small 1 or 2.5 gallons?

Hey, thank you for your replies and your input.
HE just got in there yesterday and there are 2 rainbow fish in with him. No fighting at all.

sometimes bettas freak out if there's TOO much space..it means that he'll have more "turf" to control...and it may make him stress out.  Otherwise, if you have a lot of stuff in there, heavily planted, decorations, etc.  He can visually stake out a little territory and you'll see him sleeping in the same place every day...it'll be his "hood". lol

Other people have said they had them in a small 1 gallon, put them in a 10 gallon, their betta freaked out, was depressed (for a long time I might add), etc, then when they put him back in a 1 gallon, they were all active again...so i guess space also depends on the betta's personality.

some bettas will freak out initially when you change their tank, no matter what size you move them into; they just need time to adjust.  i really don't believe 10 gallons is too much for one betta.  usually the "too much territory to patrol" kicks in when it's physically too much space to swim across.

I think alot of it has to do with just being in a new enviroment. Even humans go through it, adjusting is in call for when it comes to change.

If you significantly change a Betta's tank, they usually get cranky.  I had a silk plant in one of my guy's bowls and since he didn't seem to use it, I thought I would pull it out.  He sulked for two days before I gave in and put it back in the tank.

My Rainbowfish were super active.  If yours is used to be alone, all their hyperactivity might be freaking him out a little.
