It really depends on the fish.  Both the betta, and the others.  I have heard of many males and females being okay in a community tank.  I have also heard of many males (and females) becoming to agressive.  I have a personal experience where my platies began to nip my female betta to shreds, and I know it would have been worse if I had placed a male in there.

If the betta has a friendly personality, it might work.  But bear in mind you must watch for damage on the betta and on the other fish.  You also need to make sure the bettas are eating, and that the platies do not steal all the food away.

What kind of fish do you have in your tank? and how big is the tank? also how much of a current is in your tank? most betta don't like a big current.

Also be aware that a betta can live in a community tank for a long time and then all of a sudden decide they don't like the other fish. So make sure you have a back-up plan in case Mr. Betta decides he owns the tank.

I've kept males and females with Platies without many problems.  The Platies get to the food faster than the Bettas usually do so you need to make sure everyone is getting their fair share.

I've heard of problems keeping Bettas and Guppies together but I've never tried it myself.

You can give it a shot, but.. I don't really think it will work out real well.. maybe you'll get lucky, make sure it's heavily planted and lots of hidey spots for him, if he's feeling stressed out. and also, make sure to have an extra tank in case it doesn't work out.
