HELP! Eggplant ripped his tail!
« on: May 28, 2005, 06:08:52 PM »
We need some advice again...

I just got his tail healed and regrowth starting beautifully...now we went out at 4pm and got back at 8:30pm.  When I get back I find him with a huge rip down his tail.  It is half the length of his tail!!!  I don't know if he ate it or what but it looks like it's split in half.  UGH!  It looks awful!

I put some Bettafix in since that helped with regrowth quickly last time for us.  Is that also recommended for rips?  I hope so, if not I can pick up something else.

This fish is going to give me an ulcer!  I was so thrilled with the regrowth and how great it looked and now this!   :-[

Any advice would be appreciated!
Angela

if you dont see any signs of rot then make sure his water is kept clean often, add some aquarium salt if you haven't yet and sure feel free to use some bettafix. its just a weaker version of melafix. if you feel there is presence of rot then bettafix isn't going to cure the rot; you'll need a fin rot medication which there are several kinds available.i like kanacyn; its a broad spectrum medication and works well.
i'm in my own happy little world. dont worry. they know me there.

What do you have in the tank that he keeps ripping himself on?!  ALWAYS always always use silk plants and NOTHING with rough edges.  Bettas' fins are very fragile.  The only ornaments I have in my tanks are very smooth (terra cotta pots, mugs, etc).  Your treatment sounds fine, just get those tail-ripping things out of his tank so he doesn't hurt himself again.

You know that's exactly where Rotter's split was too. (nothing in the tank to rip on-he's got a silk plant, a very smooth cave, and a trumpet snail that he spends a lot of time watching) I wonder if it's weak point in their fins.

Rotter's healed up with clean water and salt. Then he bit a big chunk of it off. you just can't win with these tempermental boys. I'm going to quit buying VT and start buying more Plakats-they can't reach their tail!

Tail splits heal quickly if it is justa  tea. my old guy fishy also ha a split from an old plastic plant. (now i am all about silk!) There was a hole from a "leaf" and it split open right to the end so it was mor ethan half. It healing in about 2-4 days so don't worry, just keep the water clean with salt.

Thank you!  I am losing my mind since I have a smooth cup and a live plant!  I got rid of the plastic plants because of this potential problem.  I didn't want this to happen so I got rid of it and now it happens anway!  The last tear was from fin rot that he came home from pet store with...now this!

I will do tank changes often, add salt, and continue bettafix for the 7 days and see how he does!  UGH!  He is making me nuts but he is so darn cute!
