I have to chime in on the neon/ cardinal topic.
I totally agree with all points made about the differences.
As far as breeding cardinals they are extremely hard to breed in captivity, I have been experimenting for a while on this with no sucess. From all the research I have read, there is no real profit from breeding them in captivity. The are so prolific in the wild that to breed them in captivity would be good for bragging rights.

if i plan to keep a male betta in a 12 gallon with a shoal of tetras, which would be the better species to go with it, neons or cardinals?

I've not had much luck with my neons either. They seem to like to die. I had... um.. lets see.. i think 8, and now i have 2. The 6 that died died really early on too, after about 5 days.

I had 8 neons for a while, then 6 up and died on my, and I have two left.  I am waiting to see if these two will stick it out before I buy anymore to replace the ones that died.  I'm wondering, will neons and cardinals school together?

As a newbie I bought 5 neons to start off my 20 gallon tank, it was uncycled and very new. The neons I have appear to be incredibly tough, surviving my ignorance Roll Eyes They survived the cycle. In the second week of having them one of them started twirling around at the waterline and I thought for sure he was a goner, but no. 6 months later they are all still alive and well.. I realize that this must be the exception to the rule rather than the rule, because lots of other people seem to have bad luck with them.. I don't know why mine are seeming to be tougher than others but I do know that neons in general are sensitive fish. Tongue

Anytime I have kept Neons I alsohaven't had much luck. I had 6 which soon turned into 4 which soon turned into 2 which soon turned into one which went back to the pet store Tongue. I don't know if it's something I did or what but they just did not want to stay alive for me. This was a few years ago though.

hmm, I wish I had read this yesterday morning.  I passed up the cardinal tetras yesterday to get neon tetras.  All are still doing fine this morning though.
